This historic site has been occupied since 1829, with previous wood-frame mills destroyed by fires in 1834 and again in 1857. The current facility, originally known as the Athens Cotton and Wool Factory, consists of two brick buildings joined together in an L shape and constructed in 1857-1858. This factory was utilized until 1926. In 1977, the buildings were renovated to create the Old Mill Center, which included O’Malley’s Tavern, a popular gathering spot through the 1980’s with its deck overlooking the river. While modernizing the old mill, UGA made sure to maintain the historic and unique charm of the building. The original beams were saved and preserved, along with the original oak and maple hardwood flooring on the first floor, and the exposed 152-year-old hand-made bricks.

The MCG @ UGA renovation was designed with the environment in mind. Efforts were made to use as many eco-friendly products as possible; this can be seen in everything from the recycled composite decking outside to the energy efficient bamboo lighting sconces. Transforming the mill into an energy efficient facility involved replacing or updating many features, including all 127 of the old windows. “The Interim Medical Partnership Building is a welcoming home - it’s modern interior sits well with the progressive educational activities that our students are being exposed to. The layout of rooms and technological supports are excellent and provide our students with the best learning environment,” said Dr. Peter Buckley, Dean of the GHSU Medical College of Georgia.

EMBRY HILLS BRANCH LIBRARY ADDITIONOriginally built in 1990, the Embry Hills Library expansion doubled the branch size in order to better meet the needs of the community. At 8,000 square feet, the expanded library has increased its 10,000 volume collection to 23,500 volumes and added a 65-seat meeting room that did not exist in the original facility. Additionally, the newly-renovated library includes a youth services area, audiovisual area, magazine area and 15 computers for public use.
