My name is Anabel Frank. I am a highly motivated Graphic Designer. I intend to
find a job where I can show off my creative abilities. I may not know everything,
but I can learn fast. I am a curious person that loves to learn new things.

Inside, the oors, tablesandwalls were bristling withpins andstrewn withbolts o abric likean art installation, recalls Saucier. Supporting the robust structure wasagrid o massive, hal-metre-thickconcrete poststhat alloweda wide-open expanse o space. Te solid concrete slab-and-beamconstruction and massive columnsgenerate the aurao an over-sizedstage set. Te dominant colourisblack, adarkchiaroscuro ratherthan the slick, starkblacko S + Psearlierwork. InMontreal in general, andat S + Pin particular, blackisalwaysthe new black.Itssubtly textured, not quite pitchor jet black, but some indenite hue thatreectsthe relative purity o aparticularbrando modernism the chalkboardandmatte blackrubberoordemarcating the two principals working quarters, orexample. Te blackwere using now is more chargedwithexperience, saysSaucier. We do colourul black.(In alie-imitates-art moment, Perrottestepsout roman accounting meeting to greet avisitor, hisblackhair artullystreakedwithlineso white.)
Quebec designersin general, andS +P in particular, have alwaysshown moreinuence romcontinental Europe than theircounterpartselsewhere in Canada.
Te European inuence doesnot simply maniest itsel in aparticularormorshade o black, but ratherin a general approachto creation, whichinvolvesdrawing on all the artsto inormit. Te mandate o the S + Parchitecture studioisto be acreative laboratory orthe 20-oddemployees, mostly architects. o thisend, the principalshave establishedan artist-in-residence program, supplyingavisual artist witha temporary atelier/workshop, aswell asa gallery on thegroundoorto exhibit the nishedproject orresearchat the endo his orhersojourn. Te workshopand gallery may occasionally be usedorperormingarts, but, notably, the space isnot earmarkedorvisiting architects. At S + P,these spacesunction aslabs orthe rmsbroaderarchitectural research. Tereal nourishment o architecture is art, not otherarchitecture, insistsSaucier.o be sure, the architectural eldhasnot alwaysbeen kind orairto the rm.In competitions, S +Phas ahistory o being the juryspick, but then seeing thecommissionsevaporate asthose decisionsare overruled. An international juryrecommendedS + Porthe Canadian Embassy in Berlin in acompetition in the
late 1990s, but theirrecommendation wasignoredby the oreign aairsministero the day, to the shock anddismay o many in Canadasdesign community.Later, S +P won the juriedcompetition to design the Institute o Modern andContemporary Art in Calgary, but wasdroppedin avouro an architect chosenby the projectsleaddonor. Te competition processhas helpedestablishthermsreputation andprovidedit withertile groundordeveloping andshowingo itscreativity but hasnot eatheredits bed. Only recently hasit enjoyedbig-league successoutside o itshometown, representing Canadaat the 2004Venice Biennale o Architecture, andwith majorprojectssuchasthe PerimeterInstitute in Waterloo, Ontario, and the $35-million National Mountain Centrein Canmore, Alberta, now under way.
Te raw inspiration or S + Psarchitectural orm ofen derives romtheethereality o the visual arts. Te integration o art is something that comes
naturally to us,saysSaucier. Itsintegral to our work. Te studio residencyhelpsthe artists, but itsalso the perect tool or what we do as architects.ForSaucier, the design teamis inuencedby osmosis. Itsnot azoo, as in Letswatchthe artist at work. Itsmore about the inspiration he provides,he says.Perrotte ismore prosaically specic: the artist hasamorning coee oramiddayencounterwiththe architects, giving thema chance to asksomething aboutcolourororm, oranything else they might want input on.
Te aurao a sculpture gallery persistsin areasoradministration andmeetingson the groundoor. And the dramacreatedby the emphatic charcoal blackdiagonal o the main staircase isreinorcedon the secondoor by the rowso hot-rolledmetal bracketing the studio workstations(like a RichardSerrainstallation, observesSaucier). Tere, the original wide-plank maple oorretainsthe traceso actory workers. S + Pchose not to sand the oors, maintaining the original patinato embody the memory o the workerswho
once animatedthe space. More history iscontainedin the army green metalboxesand long wooden tables, ormerly usedorcutting abric andretainedby S + Pormodel making. Counterbalancedby all those dark, solidelementsisthe heart-stopping backdropon the rearwall: a huge photographic muralcalledKamouraska, by Marc Cramer, lledwith eldso ochre grasses. Wetriedasmuch aspossible to react to what we ound, ratherthan intervene toerase it, saysPerrotte. Like an artistsstudio o the 19th century, itsmore abouthow the creatorsinhabit the space, more about things like indirect lighting thanluxuriousnishes.Upstairson the thirdoor, in the private realmo Sauciersown apartment, aportion o the upperslab was removedto create aourth-oormezzanineand patio. Te apartment unurlsin a linearnarrative, bending around acondominiumsuite in an L-shapedplan that culminatesin the double-heightliving/dining area. Here, astrong, sculptural element wasneededto imbue the
space withintimacy andpersonality. Youcannot just put a couchin the middleo ahuge areaand say, Oh, thisis the living area, saysSaucier. Youneedareerence hence the uniquely shapedRussian birchplywoodstaircase. Closecroppedto the underside o the risersandrunners, it evokesan upside-downM.C. Escherdrawing, orthe menacing edge o aserratedknie.
Tat third-oorenclave, Sauciersown design, transmitsthe rmsesthetic codeandvision or the building: the use o space ratherthan surace to create anaura, anarrow range o colours, andabove all asense o height and opennesson every oor. Te opennessisreinorcedby the huge aperture orthe dramaticcentral staircase, whichbeckonsavisitorupstairsto the main action.Fourours andextracurricularprogramsnotwithstanding, the overall eectisone o unity. Tismay soundstrange, but I see it as ahumble project, saysPerrotte. We have simple goals, andin a way triedto do as little aspossible toit. Itsthe space itsel thatsprecious.
