Artifact 1 – Course Schedule

 A course schedule is important to online teaching because it is a helpful academic guide that provides students a framework to follow for daily or weekly work. It provides structure to help students manage the workload and avoid an unrealistic evaluation system. Without a course schedule, students will not know the structure of the course and what content and assignments the teacher expects to be completed throughout the semester. As you can see, in my own course schedule I included the day/date, list of activities, assignments, and notes to the student. I provided this resource as a handout to my students on our first face to face day as well as as a link in the club website.

Artifact 3 – Online Learning Resources  

PSC Online Teaching Endorsement Standards: Candidates will demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies. (I.i.VII)  Candidates will model appropriate strategies essential to continued growth and development of the understanding of technology operations and concepts. (I.i.VIII)  https://www.dropbox.com/s/wiv1l2o7lc841cf/kmcbride_online_learning_resources.doc          Reflection: (100­125 words) ­ Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  For this artifact I explored the iNACOL and SREB websites and found two (2) resources that addressed questions or concerns I had about facilitating online learning. I then summarized my findings and reflected on any lingering questions or concerns I still have about teaching online. I decided to focus on researching the current trends of virtual schools in Georgia, the status of funding for these schools, and identifying promising practices that support socialization in online classes. I also shared how I would be interested in learning more about how elementary students are experiencing success in a fully online or blended classroom. This artifact is important to online learning because it will help me learn about other strategies that instructors use so I can better promote effective instruction with my early learners.

Artifact 4 – Learning Styles  

PSC Online Teaching Endorsement Standards: Candidates will differentiate instruction of students’ learning styles and needs and assist students in assimilating and accommodating meaningful information. (II.i.IX)  https://www.dropbox.com/s/bp49pdapid2ccco/kmcbride_learningstyles_multipleintellegences.doc        Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  For this assignment I completed a learning styles inventory. My learning style is visual­spatial. However, not all students learn like I do. In order to accommodate all learning styles in an online classroom, I will use a variety of multimedia and Web2.0 tools. This artifact is important because it reminds me to allow for a variety of student works in order to increase their engagement and learning experience. Providing outlines and using organizational tools will also prove to be beneficial to my students.  Looking back on the classes I have taken for my own degree, it has been a great opportunity to see how different instructors tackle the various learning style accommodations.

  Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  For my online syllabus, I created my course goals/objectives, grading criteria, assignments and other course information in a clearly written, concise format. I provided this documentation in the Edmodo library as well as in the App Attack website. Because of the age of my online students (age 9/10), I also shared the syllabus with the parents. As an online student I found the syllabus a very useful resource. I was able to review the document and know first hand what the expectations were for the class. I am not sure my students found the same amount of

usefulness due to their age.This artifact is important so that students understand the course expectations and organization.

   Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  Because this was a blended online learning experience, I was able to provide an orientation during the face to face club kickoff day. As you can see in the presentation above we covered the following: introductions, club objectives, netiquette/digital citizenship expectations, schedule, proposed iPad apps, Edmodo, Edmodo badges, pre­assessment, and a preview of the first lesson they were to cover at home. As a follow up, I also provided them with the link to the presentation in a discussion post in Edmodo for them to share with their parents that night. This orientation was very important for setting the tone for the club. I really am glad I was able to use the blended format with these students. This artifact is important because it shows how I explained the course organization to the students.

 Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.   The artifacts above is important because it shows how I differentiated instruction for my students’ various learning styles and needs. The videos that I created in the modules included a variety of photos that reflected different home situations and cultures. These Google presentations are important because they show the use of multimedia delivered to help students learn through audio, animation, pictures and text.  I also allowed students to choose from several assessment options. I provided a rubric that showed the project requirements but they were able to pick the app that best suited their needs. The Student Showcase shows just how creative their projects turned out.

 PSC Online Teaching Endorsement Standards: Candidates will respect diverse talents and use strategies designed to include all students. (II.vi.I)  Candidates will provide activities, modified as necessary, that are relevant to special education modifications, student age, cultural background and experiences. (II.vi.II)  

  Checklists/Organizers, Videos to review lesson, Set up routine/schedule, Hands on activities (face to face) can all be found documented on the App Attack Website: http://appattackclub.weebly.com/      Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  Artifacts above are important to online teaching because it helps students that have issues with learning and attention issues. One modification I made was to allow a student to use an app they were familiar with when they felt overwhelmed with iMovie. One accommodation I made for a different student included allowing her to give her answers orally for an online quiz since she was struggling with the format. Part of the Guidance Section of the website also pointed to resources that would help my students with learning challenges. Although I didn’t need it for this particular course, I know that there are a variety of assistive technology devices that can help students in an online learning environment.

 An online learning environment can be full of diverse individuals. It is important to understand, as an online instructor how to help learners from a variety of cultures and learning styles. Offering a pre­test helped me identify their current status. They also shared their prefered learning style in their Edmodo profile. In order to engage the students, I focused on problem based learning throughout the modules. At the completion of each lesson the students had to create an assignment using their mobile device that would teach others about the importance of digital citizenship. The students used online tools in Edmodo to communicate effectively with each other. Although these students had different talents, I was able to appreciate each one and include all of them in this learning opportunity.

These artifacts are important because they show how I strived to offer many opportunities for community building. As you can see in the above resources, I encouraged them to reach out to each other, not just me,  if they had questions or needed guidance. During the first day after kickoff I saw evidence of them helping each other with browser issues in a discussion post. Following each lesson, I also asked them an evaluation question. They were to respond by creating a post in Edmodo. I also encouraged them to give each other feedback. A discussion checklist was provided to help them with this assignment. Because of their age, they still struggled communicating effectively. As a final project, I had them work as teams to create their Public Service Announcement.

   Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  As an online instructor, it was very important for me to model proper teacher­student communication. During the first face to face App Attack Club Kickoff meeting, we practiced posting to Edmodo. We discussed the course expectations (netiquette/digital citizenship) for teacher ­ student communications. I shared with them that I was available through Edmodo as well as email and phone. This age group in particular needed a lot of modeling of teacher­student communication. I did this mostly through the private discussion posting option within Edmodo.

  Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  During the Club Kickoff, I discussed the course netiquette and digital citizenship skills of the class. This helped them understand my expectations for student to student communication. Edmodo’s posting option was very instrumental in supporting student to student communication. I set the default student posts to come through my account first to ensure appropriate interaction among the learners. Once I approved the student post the whole group could see their feedback. I would encourage the students to reply to each other’s discussion post in each module. I provided a checklist to help guide them with their feedback. Due to their age, they needed a lot of help with this task. Students were encouraged to ask each other questions and give each other support throughout the course. These above artifacts are important because they show how I facilitated student­student communication.

   Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  The artifacts above are important because they reflect how I was able to successfully use synchronous collaboration tools with my students. During our face to face collaborative time, I often shared polls, asked questions, and assigned activities using the Edmodo tools. This ability to have real time communication allowed students to have virtual conversations. Because I used these tools effectively I was able to send and receive information immediately. Of course some attempts were more successful than others due to internet issues in the building. I found the use of polling in Edmodo to be one of the most effective ways to address this standard with my online students.

       Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  The above artifact is important because it shows how I used a variety of student data to inform my instruction and assist students and offer interventions for struggling learners. At the end of each lesson the students completed a quiz in Edmodo. We would discuss the quiz answers during our face to face session before moving on to the next lesson. The students also had an assignment due within each module. To help guide them, I included a checklist/rubric and shared that with them before each lesson during the face to face days. These checklists were provided electronically and as a handout. Once students turned in their quiz and assignment through Edmodo, they earned a badge for that module.

    Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  As you can see in the artifacts above, I provided a variety of evaluations for my online students. These quizzes/tests were important because they allowed me to monitor student input and identify testing issues throughout the course. I provided a pre­assessment during the Club Kickoff Day. I then gave the students a post­assessment following our last Team PSA assignment. Throughout the course I posted discussion posts and quizzes that allowed for student evaluation in each module. One of the ways I found to motivate the students to complete the evaluations was to use the badge system in Edmodo. The students worked hard to complete these assignments just so they could earn a badge for that module. Using the game theory was really helpful for addressing this standard.

 Edmodo has an embedded progress/ gradebook tool that I used to evaluate student work and course completion. As you can see in the artifact above, assignments were graded for all students. I also encouraged parents to join our Edmodo class so that they could see their child’s grades. Edmodo allows for written feedback to be shared with students. I could provide specific feedback on their work in regards to specific criteria. I also liked the fact that the student could provide feedback on their work as well. Making them part of the grading process really encouraged interaction. As you can see in the above artifact, using the gradebook was important to increase productivity.

     Reflection: (100­125 words) Reflect on why the artifact is important to online teaching, how it demonstrates mastery of the standards given, and how it contributes to your understanding of online teaching and learning.  Edmodo has a progress tool that I used to track student work and course progress. As you can see in the artifact above, it was important that I received an insight on the course’s status. I also monitored student progress using discussion posts to the group and to individual students within Edmodo.  By using these tracking tools I was able to help students remain on task and not get too far behind. Sometimes the student only needed clarification on the instructions and sometimes they just weren’t able to access the technology. Being able to touch base with them helped me provide supported they needed so they didn’t get too far behind.
