PRACTICE PROFILE AND CVs

PRACTICE PROFILE /

Atelier Bow-Wow is a Tokyo-based firm founded by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima in 1992. The pair’s interest lies in diverse fields ranging from architectural design to urban research and the creation of public artworks, which are produced, based on the theory called “behaviorology”. The practice has designed and built houses, public and commercial buildings mainly in Tokyo, as well as Europe and the USA. Their urban research studies lead to experimental project ‘micro-public-space’, a new concept of the public space, which has been exhibited across the world.

ARCHITECTURAL BEHAVIOROLOGY /Atelier Bow-Wow’s works are produced from the concept “architectural behaviorology”. The word “behavior” includes human behavior inside and outside of the building, physical phenomenon produced by different environmental elements such as light, air, heat, wind, and water in architecture, and building’s behavior in its surroundings. “Architectural behaviorology” aims to understand the behaviors of those different elements, and to synthesize them to optimize their performance in its specific context. It could be a new definition of “what organic” in Architecture.

BMW GUGGENHEIM LAB / NEW YORK

BUILT / 2011

BMW Guggenheim Lab (New York) is an experimental public space with free programs well considered by Guggenheim’s curators in a temporary structure, which is designed by Atelier Bow-Wow. The building is considered to be a pop-up fly loft theatre in the city that allows various modes of activities such as workshops, lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, receptions etc. to happen. Furniture, screens, lighting and stages are suspended in the loft space and provided according to the activities on the ground level. It is less the very light and minimum structure made of carbon fiber* which is defining lab space, but rather the rhythm of the ongoing programs and the human behavior which is why the public spaces might appear quite different in different places. The Lab travels through three different cities from New York to Berlin and afterwards to India.

BMW GUGGENHEIM LAB / MUMBAI

BUILT / 2012

The BMW Guggenheim Lab, which serves as a think tank and community gathering space, is a mobile laboratory devoted to discussing various issues related to city life. We designed the first lab building using CFRP (carbon-reinforced-plastic). Originally, this building was scheduled to travel from New York to Berlin, and then on to Mumbai. Later, however, it was decided that a second lab building would be constructed in Mumbai using local materials and technologies. Mumbai has a long tradition of erecting mandapa, simple bamboo structures, for weddings and festivals, so we decided to create a lab building belonging to the mandapa structural genealogy. Mandapa are often partially supported by nearby trees and buildings. The event organizers, however, requested that the second lab building be a freestanding structure: they wanted an itinerant space that could be moved to a new ward every week. This would make the Lab accessible to people whose castes ordinarily prohibit them from visiting museums. To achieve these objectives, we designed a structure composed of 2.5-meter-span longitudinal units and 4.5-meter-span truss beam units, all of which fit onto the back of a flatbed truck. We devised joints in which wood connectors were fastened together using rope ties. Some joints also incorporated bolts. To prevent bamboo members from splitting along the grain, we filled them with synthetic resin cement where they were bolted. We wrapped the structure in a rope noren (curtain), to provide transparency and minimize resistance to lateral wind forces, and covered it with a tent roof, to shield visitors from sunlight and bird droppings.

FOUR BOXES GALLERY / SKIVE

BUILT / 2009

The gallery is located in northern Denmark, on a former farmhouse property that was converted to an art school. It’s directly adjacent to a port district, characterized by its silo and warehouse buildings. On campus, there’s a diverse collection of buildings both traditional and modernist, as well as some art pavilions. In complete contrast with existing structures, Four Boxes Gallery is built solely of pre-cast concrete panels and looks almost primitive. The panels vary in height, enclosing two exterior lawn courtyards and one three-floor volume. The front courtyard leads to the large ground-floor exhibition space, and diffused light spills in from clerestory windows tucked along lateral walls. All interior surfaces are kept clear, without openings or interruptions, allowing for easy display, light control and spatial flexibility. Above this, two more individually contained spaces - another gallery and a workshop - are stacked, nested, and connected by a side staircase. Courtyards, too, become optional exhibition areas. As its users are mainly students engaging in all forms of experimentation and artistic creation, the building’s tough, unadorned volumes appear up to the task. Water utilities are kept detached, accessible from the rear courtyard, resulting in a pure, autonomous art space.

SHOWA KINEN PARK HANAMIDORI CULTURAL CENTER / TOKYO

BUILT / 2005

With the mountains in the background and huge round field in front, a long, undulating landscape dominates the view at the entrance to the Showa Memorial Park. Lush with greenery, even fully grown trees sprouting up from the top, it looks much more like a long, city-scale planter box than a building. Its structure is composed of sixteen cylinders, supporting the steel-truss roof; inside it feels like a miniature city constructed solely from circular buildings. Their distribution and size restrict views through the entire complex; instead, one curls around them gradually. The continuous space is flexible enough to facilitate activities and temporary events akin to those appropriate for an external plaza. Softening the interior atmosphere and providing acoustical assistance in the eight-meter-high space, a series of textiles hang from the spider-web-like structure of the roof trusses. Within each cylinder, more specific facilities (workshop, library, café) can be found. Each have different sizes and structure—some are opaque with small openings, some are fully transparent and admit sunlight—and feature natural materials employed to mediate exterior and interior. At their connection to the roof structure, truss depths increase and produce a topography of craters above. These are then filled with soil, trees are planted, and voila—a floating garden. The Hanamidori Cultural Centre works to disseminate knowledge about "green culture," in the form of workshops, exhibitions, and archives.

KOISURU - BUTA LABORATORY / KATORI

BUILT / 2012

People with disabilities are hired and guaranteed minimum wage. To do so, sales network was built by establishing branding strategy for pork and processed products. The purpose of this building is to provide a place for a factory for pork processing and packing and a restaurant, as well as an office for the social welfare agency who operates several elderly homes and this facility. The beautiful rural landscape near Narita Airport was chosen as the site aspiring for cooperation between agriculture and social welfare. This space serves not only functional purposes but also to draw out vitality from the community by connecting existing surrounding scenery and resources to this new facility. The genealogy of Italian Villa was introduced for welcoming people while becoming familiar with farming village. Attaching arms of loggias to the main building confidently places building of limited size on a large site, while addressing practical concerns including leading people from parking lot at the back of the site and lending eaves to outdoor activities like vegetable market and wood-chopping, etc. Roof of the two-storey building considering the visibility from cars on the road, consists of gambrel roofs assigned to restaurant, office, and covered plaza. Continuous ribbon of windows on the second level provides views of the surrounding cedar forest from anywhere inside. Catwalk situated all around allows for constant maintenance keeping windows beautiful, which is important for a restaurant.

KITAMOTO STATION WEST SQUARE / KITAMOTO

BUILT / 2012

This project involves not only the design of a new station plaza, but also the provocation of the civic attention on town management and the revitalization of existing commercial streets in order to prepare for a new mode of citizen life in the super-aged society of typical Tokyo suburbia. Atelier Bow-Wow has been working for 5 years on this project during which they firstly reduced the traffic area covered by asphalt and produced green gathering areas for the public. The operation was the key catalyst of the project: A new committee to discuss the use of this public space was formed, the human resources who actually use it and thus activate it were identified and various activities including a vegetable market and a crafts market were proposed and are presently prepared for the grand opening. The project exemplifies a new type of public sphere by connecting the producer of the urban environment (municipality, engineer, architect) with the citizen.

MIYASHITA PARK / TOKYO

BUILT / 2011

We renovated a 50 years old park situated on the roof of a parking structure in Shibuya, one of the busiest commercial areas in Tokyo. We collaborated with Nike Japan and the local municipality with the aim to invite potential users into the park by improving the existing structure through the introduction of new sports facilities such as skateboard park and a climbing wall. This opened a new framework of public space, which was donated equally by private enterprises, initiated by the municipality and private companies. The project provoked various discussions on public space, including the one related to the treatment of homeless people, who are gathering in and around the park.

DISASTER RECOVERY PUBLIC HOUSING / KAMAISHI CITY

BUILT / 2014

9 public housings for disaster recovery were planned at the former site of Shirahama Elementary School. Since the site is located relatively high above the sea level in Hakozaki Shirahama district, it is planned to become an evacuation area for residents by building an assembly hall, etc.As temporary housings will still remain at the site, the housing development, road planning and square planning has been done accordingly. There is a plan to build the disaster relief community space and the assembly hall after the temporary housings are demolished. The square, which is surrounded by the houses, will be the community space for residents. Each house has certain distance between each other considering the daylight in winter. Roofed outside space and sliding doors are designed to face the streets and it will stimulate the communication between the residents. The houses have large living space without having hallways. The dining kitchen, which is also a common area, is directly connected to each living space. The living spaces can be used as individual rooms as well as one common space. The counter kitchen has daylight with top light and natural ventilation. Porch and roofed outside space are designed in front of the entrance, which enables the residents to work outside and communicate with each other.

STUDENT HOUSING / MUNICH

TO BE BUILT / since 2011

The planned student housing located in the south of Munich has a dense mix of residential and commercial space. The diverse range of single, double and shared apartments, partly equipped with bay windows, sleeping lofts or roof terraces, will call for a colorful mix of residents, while spacious stairways and connected encounter spaces will vivify the housing. On the ground floor, the reinforced concrete structure is supported on pilasters with arched openings, which form arcades for an organic market, a bistro and a passage to the courtyard. The passage leads through the commercial space towards the entrance hall of the student halls of residence and aims to make the mixed use a conscious experience. The project is planned in cooperation with the Munich architect Hannes Rössler and is currently in the detailed design.

HOUSE AND ATELIER BOW-WOW / TOKYO

BUILT / 2005

Hard to both plan and construct, House & Atelier Bow-Wow is perhaps even harder to find, as it’s hidden almost completely from the access street. Establishing good manners in such a crowded area becomes crucial. With a sensitivity to provide suitable gap space, large openings are placed towards adjacent houses, even at one or two meters’ distance. This positions the interior space as a part of its surroundings: a room coexisting with its next-door neighbor’s exterior wall. As a semi-public building it is already transposing activities, inviting them inside, so if it were just a private opening perhaps it is too large, too aggressive. But this size of window can be quite reasonable and inviting, since these are spaces used by both staff and family. This is an extraordinary opportunity to situate our way of living as part of the broader order of the urban environment. The avoidance of heavy partition walls softens even further the distinction between surroundings and interior; and within this, between house and office. Instead, a long, radiant heater/cooler is installed, running vertically through the entire building; this also addresses the practical problem of climate control in a large space that is in use twenty-four hours per day. Devices like these are for forgetting about boundaries between territories, and establishing in its stead more nuanced relationships. Overlapping and permeable boundaries assign different levels of privacy within this atelier inside a family house. The home area on the upper levels can only be accessed by moving through the office area by way of a prominent staircase.

PONY GARDEN / SAGAMIHARA-CITY

BUILT / 2008

Surrounded by small houses and farming plots, Pony Garden is a ten-minute drive from Lake Miyagase. The house looks more like a small barn with its mansard roof, and features a single, broad opening with wooden shutters. The site is transformed into a standard-sized paddock, with the triangular-shaped house occupying a small corner; entering the house means entering the pony's paddock. By opening the shutters, the entire ground-floor space becomes a loggia, and from anywhere the entire paddock––and the grazing pony––is visible. The triangle's long edge is oriented towards mountain scenery beyond. Upstairs, in the bedroom attic, semi-translucent roof insulation brings in diffused light. The client, a woman in her mid-fifties and a horse enthusiast, saw this as her last chance to build a new house. Her decision to spend her remaining years with her future pony meant that a home would first need to be built. Once she embarks on this new life, she will lose, in a sense, her individual freedom. Rather than seeing this is a limitation, it becomes a unique opportunity to create time together, which synchronizes the rhythms of pony and owner. Such uncommon spatial practice required a shift in approach. Instead of imagining a tiny, low-budget house for a retired woman, why not a luxurious garden for a pony, inhabitable for a human? It's as if the pony, de facto master of the space, allows the woman to build a house in its territory. How generous! In exchange, she allots a portion of the house for the pony's room-stable.

MOUNTAIN HOUSE / NEVADA

BUILT / 2008

Typically, a loggia is in the size that could be the semi-attached space in front of a building. In the case of the Mountain House, however, the roof of the loggia on the ground floor that greets visitors at the end of the approach continues rising upward to envelop the whole house and transform the entire interior behind it into a semi-outdoor space. In other words, it is like a house built inside a loggia. The house is built in an area that, into the 1980s, had been a site for mining gold until 1980. Drainage from water cannons eroded and denuded the surrounding mountains. A decade after the mine was closed, new sprout of trees began so that today the destruction wrought by human beings and reviving nature stand in stark contrast to one another. From the loggia, one can enjoy the scenery, feel the subtle change of wind and light. It is a meditative place where one is brought close to nature’s rhythm and self-healing energy. An interior with more beds than rooms and a large north-south oriented room in the center of the home open to the outside on both sides make Mountain House a place where friends are always welcome.

OSTHANG PROJECT MAIN HALL / DARMSTADT

BUILT / 2014

A small events hall and public square were planned as a central communications area. During the entire duration of the 'Osthang Project' festival and the subsequent summer school workshop, and through the International Summer Course for New Music, daily discussions, presentations, dinners, concerts and film screenings on the theme of »communal living« will take place here. During the Summer School, the hall will be host to communal dining, as well as speeches and workshops. The hall designed together with ConstructLab is about 150 m2 in size and 7.50 m high, and structured like a house of cards. Large doors link the inside with the surrounding park. To protect it against rain, the wooden structure is covered in polycarbonate panels. The façade is semi-transparent and gleams at night.

WHITE LIMOUSINE YATAI / NIIGATA

BUILT / 2003

Followed by a crowd and creating a small traffic jam in the Tokamachi downtown, a strange, oblong cart on wheels appears, pushed by several people dressed in white. They're trying, in vain, to smoothly turn the corner—a humorous occasion en route to its next destination. White Limousine Yatai, painted in pure white, recalls the heavy snowfall and long winters for which this area is so well-known (fig. 1).A yatai (street-side food cart) is a common sight in Japanese cities (fig. 2). It has a wonderful small-scale charm, encouraging interaction due to proximity between friends and strangers alike. But whereas the standard yatai is less than two meters long and run by a single person, this one stretches out to ten meters, like a limousine, requiring several people to propel and operate it. Its extreme length allows a large group to gather at one sitting, creating a banquet-like urban experience. In keeping with the color palette, the food and drink selections are also white or translucent, featuring local specialties such as rice, tofu, pickled white radish, and Japanese sake. After its debut at the 2002 Echigo-Tsumari Triennale, it has since been glimpsed at various events around Tokyo.
