FEASIBILITY STUDY OF SOUTH HARBOUR, HELSINKITh e motivation behind my thesis is to participate

in the relevant discussion about the placement of a

museum proposed by the Solomon R. Guggenheim

Foundation, on the waterfront of Eteläsatama

in the heart of Helsinki city. Th ere are mixed

opinions concerning if this is the right way of

regenerating the harbour. As an opposition to the

design competition launched by Guggenheim,

another party organises a “counter competition”

by name Next Helsinki. Th e aim is to create a

platform for discussion; alternative proposals for

the South Harbour - which I as a part of my thesis

participate and contribute to.

How to renew the South Harbour area of

Eteläsatama for future benefi t for the city of

Helsinki? Th e scope of my thesis is connected

to topics related to both the site, the South

Harbour as a whole, and strategies connected to

cost and investment. What else could there be?

Th e possibilities given by the capital which the

city is willing to invest in Guggenheim can be

transformed into something completely diff erent.

My thesis is an exploration towards what this

alternative could be, and how it could reintroduce

lost value and create new means to the South

Harbour.

COMPOSING SPACES

THE CORRIDOR SPACCE

How to create and compose spaces

attached to diff erent programs and use?

Th rough this project, Branko Mitrovic

introduces the themes of visuality and

form in architecture.

By designing a squash center, the aspect

of visuality, composition and relation of

spaces are being discussed. Th e given site

is in a steep slope, which enables a range

of creating diff erent relations between

levels, spaces and forms/antiforms.

In my project I study the use of corridors

and hallways through times, and how it

could be reintroduced as a main space

where both the cirlution, activities of the

sports and socializing could happen.

Th e hallway becomes the main axix within

the project, which ties the diff erent parts

together.

What kind of potensial has a future

underground system for our society?

Th e task formulated by the tutors Boris Hocks and Kamiel Klaasse, brought up the aspect

of the role of an architect, right now and as well as in the future. Th e theme of creating

Amsterdam into a life resilient city confronted the group with questions and curiosity

about tomorrow´s trend. By analysing and

researching these, each individual would chose to develop a strategy/design within a

fi eld, by both fascination and relevance. In my project, I chose to focus on the hidden

possibilities undernaeth our feet. With research on already existing voids, the new metro

line development and scenarios, I create another layer to enrich and relief the existing

city. A reaction upon densifi cation and fl ow of people -remapping the functions within the

existing city.

Remapping the exsist ing ci ty, what wi l l happen? Sol id vs. void

TOMORROW´S AMSTERDAM - THE LIFE RESILIANT CITY

MY PROJECT SEEK TO EXPLORE THE UNDERGROUND SYSTEM IN THE CITY - CAN IT BE MORE THEN JUST A TUNNELL? IS THERE A NEW MEANS OF MOVEMENT IN THE FUTURE? A POSSIBILITY TO CREATE ANOTHER LAYER TO THE CITY.

By analysing the Skyscrapers, todays answer to densification, what would the exactly the opposite be? Every element could be the opposite. The mirrored Skyscraper - the Groundscraper?

This new structure will allow you to have a peak down to another world. A void. A hole. A pathways which makes new connections between the existing city and its functions. A labyrinth to discover new places with new meanings. A TRANSITION toanother layer.

The new North/South Line is an example of how the city is coping with the pressure of people. The new line goes throughout the south of the city, ending up in the north of Amsterdam, and will relief the traffic in the city to some extent. An underground of approximately 10 km is been dug for this purpose. But is there more to it?

My transition connects to this metro line, and creates a vortex for the underworld traveller.

A FOOD HALLFOR THE PEOPLE AT SAUPSTAD

The course of Complex Buildings lead by Steffen Willenger was this year formu-lated to design a market hall in the city of Trondheim. My group was given a site in Saupstad, an area in the city with the most social problems. Is there a chance to turn this trend around with only one single building?

We suggest to “ZIP” the people together in Saupstad with three means: Cooking, harvesting and collective work. Our pro-posal is clarify the center of Saupstad, and situates inbetween the urban side - the street level, and the park zone on the upper level.

The average temperature in Norway is raising. And so is the amount of rain – statistics shows the further increase of rainwater will be almost 20 % in the next few years. There are already 200 rain days yearly in Trondheim and, like many other big cities; the city is struggling coping with the increasing amount of rainwater.

One normal household approximately uses 40 % of their total water usage f lushing down in toilet. If we as architects design structures that could save some of it, the rainwater could be used: Not only for our toilets, washing machines and plants, but also for creating good living environments.

HOW CAN RAIN WATER BE USEFULL IN OUR SOCIETY?

THROUGH HANDLING THE RAIN, WE CAN MAKE PLACES WITH IDENTITY, GOOD LIVING ENVIRONMENT AND INVITE TO ACTIVITY

Trondheim today: From the periph-ery and in to city centre. The city expands outwards

What if we turn it around? What

if the centre is in the periphery - a

borderline - and the city only grows

inside it

Trondheim´s development

Then connect an highly effective trans-

portation on this linear city, and avoid

bottle neck effect

There will be 5 Borderlines in Trond-

heim, whom together defines the city.

We are solving one of them - the on in

Lade

The starting point for this project was the area Lade, northeast in Trondheim, which is today highly debated in term of urban planning. Lade is today an industrial and commercial area, close by the city centre. By firstly analysing the existing situation, we would then create a new plan to solve the mono-use of the area and thinking future sustainability and how to cope with the increasing housing pressure in Trondheim.

My group discussed not only challenges Trondheim will encounter, but also all prob-lems the bigger cities are struggling with. The increasing population and the environmental questions made us look at the bigger picture – the future to come. A drastic change to how we plan cities have to be made – but what and how? Through this project we have explored new ways of thinking cities; from todays core model where the city is in the centre, to a linear city system.
