Ever Thought About Hiring International Students? You Should!

Posted by Jenny Xie on Feb. 28, 2013

This is a guest post by CIEE, a nonprofit, non-governmental international exchange organization.

Smart. Driven. Enthusiastic. Committed. Sounds like the qualities of a perfect intern, right? Now, if only finding and hiring the right intern was as simple as identifying a few key traits. In reality, it can be a time-consuming and expensive process.

CIEE, the world leader in international education and exchange programs, can help you find and hire appropriate interns for your company. CIEE works directly with the Baltic American Freedom Foundation (BAFF) to pair highly qualified interns from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia with companies in the U.S.—at no cost to the employers. CIEE does the work for you—reviewing applications, interviewing candidates, learning about your organization’s mission, goals, and needs—to place the right intern with your company for six months or a year. The BAFF Professional Internship scholarship covers the participant’s placement costs, travel health insurance, airfare, and a monthly stipend for housing, meals, transportation, and a little extra pocket money.BAFF scholarships are awarded based on a highly competitive application process. CIEE and BAFF aren’t looking for just another person to fill a position—they’re looking for the next generation of business and civic leaders. Chosen participants all have a few things in common: they have enough English language proficiency to easily work alongside their colleagues in an American business environment; they’re currently pursuing a post-secondary or postgraduate degree or graduated within six months of applying; they’re leaders who are driven to excel; and they’re genuinely interested in learning about American culture and sharing their own unique perspectives.

Hiring an intern from the Baltics—or any international student—is about more than gaining an extra set of hands around the office. Not only do you help a student gain valuable work experience in the U.S. that will have a positive impact on their future career, you’re also providing your employees with the chance to discover new perspectives and knowledge of another country. The ultimate goal of the program is the help strengthen ties between the U.S. and other countries, furthering CIEE’s mission to provide transformative experiences that help students, educators, and professionals gain the knowledge and skills necessary to live and work in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.

Bottom line: the BAFF Professional Internship Program offers employers the ability to hire uniquely qualified interns that offer far more than just the right skills.
