COMPARISON WITH PREVIOUS YEARS

Our students results continue to set the standard in Zambia.

IGCSE

We are very pleased that the number of students who achieved an average grade of A or above in all 9 of their subjects (page 1) has continued to increase. Almost half (47%) of the grades obtained were grades A or A*. Nearly all of our students achieved at least 5 A* to C passes.

A-LEVEL

There were some outstanding results in the Sixth Form giving our students access to the top Universities around the world. More than half the grades achieved were at Grades A*, A or B—a remarkable achievement, and our overall pass rate at A2 –level was 100%

We wish all of our students, who have completed their time at Chengelo God’s blessing as they take the next steps in their education.

TOP STUDENTS: Many of our top students have remained at Chengelo to continue their studies. Congratulations to Bianca, Moses, Arisa, Tigone, Luzia, Abelo, Kukeng’a, Rowan, Chitalu, Daniel and Towani pictured above.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE FOR SCHOOLS, 2012 MULUNGUSHUI DAM, KABWE, ZAMBIA The Adventure Challenge for Schools was held outside of South Africa for the first time ever. Chengelo School through Ndubaluba has been involved in the Challenge for the last ten years and had the privilege of hosting the 2012 event here in Zambia. The scale of the event means there was plenty of organizing and logistics to carry out. Sponsors came on board to help fund the Challenge, including many from the local farming community.

Five teams from Zambia competed against three from South Africa and two from Zimbabwe. Chengelo School had two teams, Baobab College one team, ISL one team and Amano one team. Stanford Lake College, Helpmekaar and Kloof High School made the long journey up from SA. Falcon College from Zimbabwe entered two teams.

This multi-activity Adventure Race based at Mulungushi Boat Club ran over 4 days from the 3-8 Dec 2012.

During the first day the teams rotated around 10 different activities including problem solving tasks, first aid rescues, kayaking, rock climbing, bouldering, rock-jumping and mountain biking.

On Day 2 the teams headed into the Mulungushi river gorge via the Lunsemfwa Hydro-power station. The decent is an exciting lower on a winched skip into the gorge and then the teams hiked along the riverbed to a range of different activities. Finally, the team challenge was to hike back out of the gorge and ride back to the Boat Club, what a day!

The ‘Grand Challenge’ spanned over Day 3 and Day 4. This really tested the resolve and strength of the teams; 50km of mountain biking riding with camping gear, 6km of rafting, 15 km of canoeing, 7km of running, 14km of hiking into and out of another gorge and camping the night at the Mwumbashi Mulungushi river confluence in the heart of the Zambian bush! Rocks and water was the main theme of the race and the teams experienced plenty of it during the Grand Challenge.

After a fun and challenging 4 Day Race the results were;

1st

Place Chengelo School, Zambia: ‘Lumo Riders’

2nd

Place Stanford Lake College, South Africa: ‘Ubuntu’

3rd

Place Helpmekaar High School, South Africa: ‘Compass Sport’

4th

Place Falcon College, Zimbabwe: ‘Bushtick Warriors’

Spirit of International School of Lusaka, Zambia: ‘Under Dawgs’

Adventure

Team Spirit Kloof High School, South Africa: ‘E-Lemon-eaters’

Team Chengelo ‘Lumo Riders’ canoeing to their points.

Team ‘Bemba Buffalos’ on the long canoe raft to the finish line

The long hike up for Lumo Riders!

CHENGELO ACS TEAMS LUMO RIDERS: Dan Parson’s (Capt), Choolwe Lourens, Joshua Reid, Aaron Stemmit

BEMBA BUFFALOS: Campbell Young (Capt), Guiseppe Carretta, Joshua Mwarere, Tozi Mutambo

The Chengelo teams really excelled in all areas of the race. Lumo Riders set such a high pace throughout and were deserved winners at the end of the 4 days. Bemba Buffalos were always entertaining the crowds with their comments and race spirit, a very popular team. They have plenty of potential for future ACS events.

However, the results were not as important as the experiences the teams had during the race and the potential for each racer to grow and develop because of them. The real challenge was to complete the race and make the most of the experience. All the teams did manage to complete the challenge and were worthy participants. We thank God it all went so well. Thank you to all the sponsors, especially Chengelo School for all their input. A big thank you to the many ex-Chengelo students who were helping as officials for the race. Thanks to all the officials and Ndubes team for a very well organized and run ACS 2012. The feedback from all the teams was excellent. The most satisfying when a SA team coach commented that they had felt the presence of God in the officials and race! Our aim was that God be glorified throughout. We look forward to this year’s race!

FORM 1 CAMP, 2013 At 07:30 on Monday 21st January 53 Form 1 students and 4 tutors set out on the 15km walk through the bush to Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre at the start of a five day camp of adventure challenges, friendship forming, team building and character development. En route the four teams got to know each other and made up team names and war cries, while dodging red ants and sticky mud. There followed lots of exciting activities including orienteering, initiative tests, climbing Jacobs ladder and canoeing.

Day 3 was the Rocket Race, each team raced to be first to complete the 8km challenge with raft-building, orienteering and initiative tests along the way. The Golden Dragons managed to win although it was a close fought race!

Day 4 was Surivival Day. In the morning we were taught how to survive in the bush by making traps, collecting clean water, making a fire without matches and making a bush mattress from grasses. Later we built shelters to sleep in and enjoyed supper, games and songs around the campfire. We had to abandon our shelters in the night due to a thunderstorm and make our wet, muddy way back to Ndubaluba chalets – that was an adventure in itself!

Every evening we got together for different activities and our talent show on entertainment evening was great fun, especially when the teachers and instructors sung a song about us!

We enjoyed getting to know each other and out tutors on Form 1 Camp but also learned a lot! We are grateful to the Instructors at Ndubaluba for such an exciting and adventurous week and thank God for the opportunity we had to experience so many new things!

“Ndubaluba taught us how to live with only the basic necessities of life, how to trust each other or people who we didn’t know very well and it taught us how to trust God.”

Josiah Mbao and Chinga Sichone 1H

“I enjoyed caneoing a lot. I thought it was going to be boring at first! We played pirates, raced and the canoe I was in got tipped, it was so fun! I thank God for being with me the whole way.

Kashulo Muteto 1E

“Ndubaluba is a fun place to be because a lot of activities take place. I was very afraid of some activities but my teacher told me to trust my friends and when I did everything went okay and I enjoyed my day!

THE BACK PAGE GAMES WITH AMANO SCHOOL & SPORTS IN ACTION COMMUNITY TEAM

On Saturday 12th January Chengelo hosted Amano Christian School for some games in rugby, netball, girls and boys football and volleyball. Apart from the games being really competitive, it was a test of fitness for the players.

The Chengelo boys and girls volleyball teams beat Amano on the day. Both the Chengelo girls A and B teams won their games with a score line of 2 – 0, while the boys’ results could have gone either way Chengelo managed to win 2 – 1.

The football performances from both the boys and girls were both strong and convincing. The girls beat Amano by 3 – 0. Goals came from Verocia Chiluba (2) and Virginia Sondashi (1). The girls’ team drew their second match against the Sports In Action Community team from Kabwe. This was particularly impressive as the visitors had two players with junior national team experience. Well done to the girls. For the boys game, Chengelo managed to get a 5 – 2 win over Amano. Scorers were Chiteta Njolomba (2), Daniel Petros (1), Daliso Mbewe (1) and Kachinvya Silwamba (1).

Chengelo showed their strong points again in the girls netball when they played Amano. Both the A and B teams displayed convincing performances and won their matches 21 – 1 and 13 – 7 respectively. Well done!

ISAZ CROSS COUNTRY

After more than a seven year absence Chengelo Secondary took part in the ISAZ Cross Country first leg held at Baobab on Saturday 2nd February 2013. Chengelo entered a team combining Secondary and Primary students and performed excellently to emerge as winners on the day. While it was difficult to determine records due to changes in the courses that are run every year, Chengelo took first place in all six secondary competitions. Well done! The following came first in their individual races.

Maria Bangala U14 Girls 1.8km 7min 14.89sec Herbet Mithi U14 Boys 1.8km 6min 27.65sec Berry Chamulonde U16 Boys 2.3km 7min 32.22sec Daniel Parsons U19 Boys 3.0km 10min 6.35sec

Chengelo are preparing for the annual football and netball festivals beginning with the ISAZ Copperbelt event to be hosted by Chengelo both to defend their titles as Copperbelt and National ISAZ Champions in football and netball. Also, Chengelo have the opportunity to reclaim the National Schools Netball Championship which they won in 2010 and 2011 but out missed last year because we could not take part in the event. Chengelo are the only school to have won the championship twice. Locally, we look forward to our Triathlon and the house matches in cross country, rugby, soccer and hockey. So far, the sports house points after the junior boys and girls inter house cross country event show that Mukwa are in first position followed by Ndale while Kaimbi. We look forward to lots more sport after the break.

Mr Francis Sichinga, Head of PE

FQM 15 A-SIDE RUGBY FINALS 2013

Simba School – Sat Feb 9th. Chengelo fielded a strong squad of twenty-one players that were enthusiastic and eager to do well. The Finals were played in two Pools of four teams. Chengelo’s first game was against Malela and we got the tournament started with a 12 -0 win thanks to two well executed tries from Moses Manongo, and a drop kick conversion from Mbaki Banda.

With no break, Chengelo went on to play Simba School, last year’s champions. This was a very closely fought contest with opportunities for both sides to score. A penalty awarded as the full time bell sounded gave Simba a win. Some confusion among Chengelo players about who had been awarded the penalty – a quick tap from 5 metres out and Simba crashed over in the corner to win the game 5-0.

The last of the Pool games was was against Chifubu who beat Chengelo with a drop goal in the first two minutes of the game. Even though Chengelo pushed their opposition and literally camped in their own “22” Chifubu ended up winners 3-0 and gained second spot in the Pool.

The American Tournament system we were playing meant that Chengelo who came third in our Pool, played Kansenshi who came third in their Pool - for the Shield Final.

Chengelo seemed to have saved their best rugby for the final. Some brilliant rucking and attacking play piled the pressure on Kansenshi who themselves played a hard physical game. Again a string of penalties for infringements allowed Chengelo’s Mbaki Banda to slot three penalty kicks to Kansenshi’s one. Mulaye Kwambana collected on the half way line and tore down the pitch out running the Kansenshi defence to score between the posts. Mbaki Banda duly slotted the conversion kick making Chengelo the 2013 Shield winners by 16-3 with Tiago Gracia being awarded the man-of-the-match ball by tournament organisers.

Chengelo went into the finals lacking match practice, but they grew in confidence and improved their game play each time they played and, they finished the day playing some excellent rugby. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience for all.
