C.F. MOLLER ARKITEKTFIRMAETORDRUPGAARD MUSEUMInternational competition project for the Ordrupgaard Museum, realized with C.F. Moller Architecture studio in Copenhagen. The project consisted in the underground expansion of Ordrupgaard Impressionists’ museum, completing the extension formerly realized by Zaha Hadid in a historic building in Charlottensburg (Copenhagen). The project reached the final stage of the competition (third prize), winning on projects such as MVRDV, Kengo Kuma and Snohetta.

(Copenhagen, Denmark - 2012)

In order not to jeopardize the relationship between the old building and the

Zaha Hadid expansion, we chose to make cuts in the ground in front of the park,

creating striking effects of light and a close connection between the underground

space and the centuries-old forest. The original greenhouse entry became the main

hub and center of the cultural pole.

RECONSTRUCTION OF DORM AND COURTYARD, HISANI ORPHANAGE Fundraising, project design and works supervision on site for the reconstruction of the dorm and resettlement of the courtyard area for the Hisani Orphanage in Tanzania.Through the creation of pavements, roofs and drains the courtyard is now accessible also in the the rainy season, offering spaces for socializing, study and leisure. The project has been realized only with local workers and materials.

(Mwanza, Tanzania - 2012/2013)

A continuous and curve canopy preserves the fruit trees and covers several functions: outdoor classrooms, an area for the kitchen, play areas for children and separated spaces for boys and girls. The parts of the roof that are not incorporated are covered by lawns, trees and flower beds; the ground is

levelled to create opportunities for outdoor activities and relax.Children followed the work with curiosity and interest, using the spaces and facilities as soon as realized. The workers acquired new skills and were proud of the results.

DORM RECONSTRUCTION FOR THE HISANI ORPHANAGE IN BUSWELO, TANZANIA

I supervised the reconstruction of the dorm which had collapsed due to exceptional

weather conditions: promotion of fundraising, project design and works supervision

on site. The dorm is now completed and hosts 60 children of the orphanage.

Page 14: Portfolio e CV luigi castelli 2010/2013

I chose to tackle the emergency while at the same time involving the local community, integrating traditional construction methods and materials with technological solutions andsimple improvements, and contributing to the training of local workers and to

the improvement of local expertises. In order to rise the necessary funds to complete the construction I decided to motivate donors through the possibility of choosing some well-defined and low cost modules, customizable with a specific color.

CENTRE FOR INCLUSION, WORKING AND SOCIAL PROMOTIONThe Master Degree’s thesis project aimed at creating housing and laboratories for sustainable development and social inclusion of vulnerable people in Tanzania. The building (which could be realized with low costs, and using local workers and materials) has the main goal of creating a self-sustainable community from an economic and energetic point of view. Particular attention has been paid to analyse and consider the needs of disabled children and their mothers, and to propose a multi-functional solution where all actors involved can collaborate with their specific competences and capabilities.

The laundry-compluvium with photovoltaic roof (at the center of the main courtyard) is the place for exchange and meeting, and also for the production of energy and water.

Page 19: Portfolio e CV luigi castelli 2010/2013

Regarding the difficult climate, measures have been taken to store and reuse

rainwater, to produce electricity and better comfort. The modular structure is a

replicable and extensible prototype, and it was developed on the basis of previous

local experiences and thanks to technological solutions designed jointly with

Politecnico di Torino .

TEAM ROME - MED IN ITALY:INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE

I was member of the team for the project “Med in Italy” which won the third prize at

the Madrid Solar Decathlon Europe (first prize for Sustainability), competition between

the most innovative, high-performative and energetically sustainable houses. The

project combines Mediterranean tradition with contemporary technologies.

LIBRARY OF ARTSEX-LAUGHTERHOUSEROME, 2011/2012

Project for the Arts’ Library of the University of Roma Tre. The library covers an area of 1,400 square meters and hosts about 30,000 volumes. The project also includes spaces dedicated to leisure, catering and administrative

activities. The building develops on 3 levels above ground, with a comb-like configuration whose spine is the distribution area, which is illuminated by a rectilinear skylight . The classrooms are separated by patios at different heights.

LIVING AS FROM TIMBER: MULTIPURPOSE CENTER FOR SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF BLACKBIRD LEYES Project realized with arch. Melissa Kinnear - Oxford Brookes University (co -founder of Architecture Sans Frontieres - UK). Center for Research on collecting and processing wood, production of energy from renewable sources, self development and welfare for disadvantaged communities of Blackbird Leyes in Oxford .

(Oxford, UK - 2011)

Page 28: Portfolio e CV luigi castelli 2010/2013

The project aims at being a meeting place for the community of Blackbird Leyes and an engine of economic development for one of the most deprived neighborhoods of Oxford. The multi-purpose center includes an outdoor theater and several pavilions for storage,

processing and sale of timber and local products. The different functions are covered by a large accessible roof, which also provides energy for the community and connects two areas on the outskirts divided by the railway through a iconic pedestrian bridge.

ICT WOMEN CENTER FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION AND PROMOTIONDuring my participatory workshop in Istanbul (Istanbul and Oxford Brookes Universities), I addressed the local community of the Fener Balat district and asked to identify the most critical issues of the district, in order to find the correct design solution for a community building.

(Istambul, Turkey - 2011)

Page 32: Portfolio e CV luigi castelli 2010/2013

Focusing on the particular difficulties of women in the context of strong Muslim tradition, the choice was to design a center for development of ICT competences for women. In particular, we projected spaces for women to have access to online-learning, as the most suitable and

immediate tool to overcome the gender gap. The introspective dimension of space (courtyard) is a fundamental element to ensure women the necessary easiness to exercise their right to education. Different and specific climatic solutions were considered for the place.

Housing with experimental-aggregative-typological characteristics realized for the Design Workshop held by Prof. Vidotto. The themes of the road, social control and of need for privacy and sociability have been studied during the workshop. Accommodation’s dimensions

vary from a base-element of 28 to a maxi-mun of 50 square meters, and it is possi-ble to add incremental portions, obtaining typological and dimensional variety, flexibility and cost savings. Rhyth-mic façades, rigorous protruding volumes and inhabited well-defined open spaces.
