8 9Popeye panel

This painting served as part of my graduation for my study at CIBAP. It resembles a still life scene from a composistion of two comic book pages and a newspaper page.

The front page is the april 18 1912 edition of the Daily Mir-ror, and states the sinking of the Titanic. Mixed techniques, linseed oil and alkyd based paints. Wooden panel 2400 x 1200 mm.

2009 / CIBAP / Zwolle, the NetherlandsBlacksmith wallpainting

For the second part of my graduation on CIBAP, I had decorated a wall in the smithy where I had interned six months earlier. The painting visualizes the creative proc-ess of the tradition of forging. The golden banister resem-bles the array of materials the modern blacksmith is re-quired to master.

Enclosed in this portfolio is a memory stick with a short stop-motion movie of this project. You can also search YouTube for “sven wall paint-ing”.

The table’s design is organi-cally shaped to suit the client’s wishes, yet blend in the exist-ing garden design. The legs are made of forged square steel tubes, which fold like wet cardboard. 1000 x 1000 x 800 mm, natural slate and powdercoated steel.

In 2010 I experimented with an old japanese jewelery mak-ing technique; Mokume Gane. Instead of using precious met-als such as gold and silver, I combined stainless steel and pure copper.

Copperoxide can show all the colours of the rainbow on the surface when heating the bar in random spots. The handle material is rare Black Palm wood, riveted in place.

PROJECT / BABY SWORD

A sword sees the light of day through its makers hands. This sword doesn’t need to be taken by the hand, it will find its own way. Measures 1000 x 700 x 250 mm. Forged steel and oakwood

Plano LED lamp

This Plano lamp is made for students living on their own. The principle of folding also provides the on and off switch-ing of the LED strips mounted in the back.

The lamp is designed to re-duce production and assem-bly costs as much as possible.

16 17Trojan horse2012 / Windesheim / Hasselt, the Netherlands

The Trojan Horse was part of a local festival in the village of Hasselt which is called “Has-selts Strongest”. The contest-ants strength and stamina was tested through various game elements.

Windesheim was asked to think of a part of the event and realise it. I have played a big part in the constructional conceptualisation and realisa-tion. Also I had organised a very fruitful creaitivity session.

The contestants were to move the giant horse back and forth as fast as possible over a 30 meter cobbled road.

Injection moulded table

For the class Constructing for Production I designed a poly-propylene table suitable for rotational and injection mould-ing production. All the table’s features are chosen following designrules, to use the least amount of material and to hold up against vertical forces

The bottom picture shows an artistic render showing the table in a 24k gold and an un-worldly soapbubble-like mate-rial, rendered in KeyShot.

18 19Man-powered karts have al-ways been popular in Holland. They are a part of most dutch people’s youth and built to hold up against even the most destructive children.

This luxurious looking trike is designed using SolidWorks. It’s built up from rectangular steel tubes, PC seats, topped off with light colored high gloss varnished wood & air-less wheels.

This copy of Philips’ Senseo is made using SolidThink-ing, an intuitive 3D modelling program to rapidly create volumes. Volumes are built from splines and can be sin-gle curved or double curved. Objects made in SolidThinking have no realistic dimensions.

20 21Princess Household Applianc-es is a dutch company that asked our school to redesign their “Classic Fat Free Fryer”. The issue was that it didn’t do it’s job well enough, the upper two pictures show the existing model.

We looked into all aspects of the frying process; preparing food, heatsources, movement and airflow.

Our team of 4 had researched consumer demands, tested similar products, and tested our solutions with simple mod-els. We’ve made foam and steel models to check dimen-sions and functioning.

The new design can safely be used in the kitchen as well as on the dinnertable.

The fryer is childfriendly since there is no oil and the controls are on top of the fryer. You won’t burn your fingers to the exterior because of the con-stant cooling airflow between the interior and exterior wall.

The placing and size of the handle provides optimal er-gonomic handling. Our biggest selling point is that we’ve man-aged to increase frying capac-ity without enlarging the fryer.

22 23Diverging / Converging2013 / Windesheim / Zwolle, the Netherlands

This assignment is all about di-verging and converging. I had to choose a random product for €3, so I bought this silicon oven mitt. I sketched varia-tions of shapes and functions, after which I combined these in three individual concepts.

I chose a concept and made a model out of it. The miniature model is made of four milime-ter thick aluminium sheet and can be used in different posi-tions.

24 25Flying object2013 / Windesheim / Zwolle, the Netherlands

The aim of this assignment was to create an object that makes the impression it can fly. The collage captures the essence of the theme refer-ring to shapes and materials, with the purpose of commu-nicating my mindset to a pro-jectgroup.

Through sketching i found a combination of shapes with strong sharp masculine curves. It could resemble a swallow with an open beak. The use of stained brass is an element borrowed from the steampunk style.

26 27The letters of the warehouse chain HEMA translate to Dutch Unity Price Coopera-tion. HEMA celebrated its 80th birthday in 2006 with 500 shops. It has gradually transformed from a poor peo-ple’s shop a recognised brand with it’s own distinctive de-sign, yet HEMA stayed accesi-ble to everyone.

Since 1985 HEMA organises a design competition for stu-dents. This year the theme was “organise your life”.

For my entry I started by defin-ing HEMA’s corporate identity to adapt my designprocess to.My concept is called the DOORganiser. It lets you uti-lize the space lost by your dooropening and serves as a last reminder before you leave a room.

The left page shows details of the document accompanying my entry, whereas the right page shows a few details of the sketching process.
