I graduated with honors in Building & Archi-tectural Engineering in 2010 from Pakistan. In 2012, I completed M.Arch from University of Melbourne. Since then I’ve had 1 year of working expeience working in design studios in Australia and Pakistan.

The new RMIT Design Hub on the corner of Swanston and Victoria Street is an important new site for design research, innovation and production. The building is an important new representation of design in a university setting and the city. In this studio an opportunity was provided to redesign a new design hub for RMIT.
The issues of university identity, site identity (based in ritual, location and memory), the neighboring contextual legacy of architect-designed encounters with history and the mosaic pattern of small scale artisanal production in the central business district were explored. After the issues on site and its vicinity were recognized research was done in order find an appropriate way to approach design. Precedents were found, sketches were done and the ideas which came out of it were developed which lead way to the final design.
Before RMIT Design Hub building was built on site their used to be a brewery on site. This brewery building was very famous in Melbourne. There used to be a hotel on the corner of the brewery site. The main purpose of the hotel was to provide a place to exhibit and sell beer.
After RMIT took over brewery building on site was demol-ished, but its spirit remains. As time passes, the occu-pants move on and are replaced by new occupants. The memory of the previous occupants of the spaces echoes in the hollowness of space. The basic concept for design is that this spirit or ghost of the old building is taking over the body of the new one.
Upon further exploring the traditional concept of spirit I found that spirit is:- Formless, but possess the body of the new.- Reminds of the old.- Uncanny and unexpected from the usual.
The intention of the thesis is to integrate the memories of the inhabitants of a site as an ingredient to build.
By overlaying RMIT design hub building over old brew-ery layout, those parts of RMIT building are kept intact where there are remaining parts of brewery on site and the parts destroyed is where ghost of brewery takes over. This ghost deforms everything it touches producing uncanny spaces.
Concluding, sites get their meaning and identity from the memories that people have had of them. A new forced built intervention on a site deprives it of its desire to hold back certain collective memories and eventually the historical identity that used to unite the community of the place, gets erased from the city. This project is a re-collection of all those memories integrated with the new ideas for a healthy future.

Initially, there used to be a brewery on the site. When RMIT bought this land they demolished everything that was there, thus depriving site of its original memories.
Since, the old brewery build-ing wasn’t repected so the design concept is that ghost or spirit of this building is now haunting the new RMIT design hub building.

Floors above contain com-puetr labs, workspaces and student lounges. The open plan allows for better col-labration between students encouraging group discus-sions and cross-pollination of ideas from one design faculty to the other.
Atriums and open spaces provide visual access be-tween different floors, thus keeping you in touch with your surroundings and mak-ing the user aware of things happening around him. This is done so that students can be inspired from their peers work.

The materials chosen for the ‘skin’ of hte structure is largely due to the intended playful atmosphere aside from the lifecycle of the materials.
The elastic and stretchable nylon fabric is recycled from parts of
stockings and leggings. Different colourful fabric fillers light with a changing wash of colour, produce

In a TV station security is of prime importance, not only due to the expensive equipment but also due to VIPs visiting it often. The building is designed in a way so as to fulfill these requirements. For this purpose, audience section is completely separated and security gates with swipe cards are located at key places to ensure that only concerned personnals may enter.
Tv station is designed giving a due consideration to the nature of dif-ferent functions. Public oriented areas are placed close to the main entrance lobby area for easy ac-cess. The office area which has no direct link with the activities of the studio is provided with a separate entrance so that the studio work flow is not effected.

The aim of this building is to celebrate different cultures in Melbourne.
Hawker style markets, stalls and booths are proposed for the proj-ect so that retail can flourish.
The retail areas are divided into different zones (using different level for each zone i.e: making use of the natural slope). Each zone is assigned with a different culture that is found in Mel-bourne e.g: Chinese, Aboriginal, Greek, Koreans etc.
A performance space with a stage is also given to celebrate festivals of all these different cultures. The intention is to make this building a “Cultural Hub in Mel-bourne.”
It has been observed that people of Melbourne love places like stalls or booths with a casual setting. Few of such examples are night markets in Melbourne and setup by Crown Casino at Chinese New Year. Keeping these things in mind this building seeks to celebrate diversity and cultures of Melbourne within an urban setup by welcoming it into the centre of the city.

A performative installation piece of generative design; this project consisted of multiple systems in place that create immersive envi-ronment.
An entire semester was spent learning behavioural coding to design a spatial experience that continually responds to human pres-ence.
Physically, the structure was designed with digital fabri-cation techniques and put together lightweight textiles using sewing machine.
The intelligent swarming patterns were linked to the encoded light and sound be-haviors designed by teams to react to light triggers and presence.

VLS MAPPING EXIBITION
1. I began my video with making people aware of the present geometry by high-lighting different boxes all over the composition.
2. Then a sketch appears and fades out whose movement is synchronized with
the music to make viewers aware of the music that is being played.
3. After 30 seconds another sketch ap-pears with random agents which ar-range themselves to form a cityscape.
4. The final sketch with cityscape comes up. Light glows up one by one on all the horizontal surfaces. Ambient light gets
dimmer to give impression of nighttime.
INITIAL EXPERIMENTATION
LED Balloons
Getting inspired from Jas Johnston’s paper model in CRIDA this form was derived. The idea was to take it further and use inflatable structure cloth to use as a skin.

After this experimentation we realsied that acrylic has an el-egance of its own and have good light reflecting properties. So it was decided to make a lantern in perspex only.

Ribs curving inwards to hide the inner core and for the desired lighting effects
Holes to put in thread to hold the lantern.
Removable disc so that batteries can be changed when required.
CONSTRUCTION DRAWING FOR THE LAMP
Designing of a lamp was required for the final installation. This lamp was to act as a light source, which when taken closer to light sensor will effect readings on it thus initiating a response.
The design was to be as sophisticated as installation itself. Thus, with the help of grasshopper script this lamp was made out of persperx.

Inspiration
Client went to Langkawi in Malay-sia and was very impressed by the architecture and relaxed envi-ronemnt at the Holiday Inn wehre he stayed.
They wanted there farm house to look like Holiday Inn, a place where they can relax during holidays and invite friends over for bbq.

This is a 3- bedroom house for a family of four. As according to cli-ent’s requiements all family gather-ing areas are kept at the back of the house so that living areas get views into the backyard with abundant natural sunlight.
The complexity of the project comes from the extreme gradient of the site. There is a change of about 8 meters from front of the house to the back.
After the initial site analysis, the pro-posed solutions is to have 3 different finished floor levels inside the house and garage at a lower level. By do-ing this the construction costs were kept minimum and also best archi-tecture solution is achieved which responds to the site conditions.

This is a town planning project with five 3 bedroom units on a site. After initial feasibility studies it was pro-posed to make use of the lane on the side and provide access to the units at the back from this lane.
It was kept in mind that privacy of each unit is kept and any overlooking issue were dealth with accordingly.
