We are very proud to introduce our new digital magazine, Portfolio Homes, and hope you enjoy our inaugural issue. As an independent company with deep roots in the communities we serve, we believe we are best able to highlight the lifestyle and amenities of this incredible place in which we live, Monmouth County. Sure, we sell beautiful properties ranging from historic estates to luxury new construction, waterfront compounds to equestrian farms, but we understand that it’s the community ~ the culture, the fun spots, the local values ~ that newcomers are most interested in learning about when deciding on what area they will call home.

Each issue of Portfolio Homes will feature some of our most compelling available properties as well as profiles of community leaders we admire and local building and design resources. This month’s issue features the tireless Claire Knopf, a champion of many local causes that Resources Real Estate supports, as well as Kevin Hughes, of K M Hughes Fine Homes, a respected builder and member of our new construction division.

In addition to being eco-friendly, one of the benefits of a digital magazine is that it allows for easy access to additional online content including links to our most recent market report and the individual property websites that we create for all of our listed homes. Resources has always been a leader in technology solutions for our clients and we encourage you to explore beyond the confines of the magazine as well as share it with your friends.

recognized Shipe Reno Architects. Situated on 10.4 acres, the mansion boasts 18,000 square feet of living space with an additional 7,200 square feet on the lower level. Seven fireplaces add elegance and warmth to the estate, which features nine bathrooms (five full; four half ), five bedroom suites and an elevator.

How long have you been in the home construction business? For more than 10 years K M Hughes Fine Homes has built and renovated homes throughout the two River area as well as developed, built and marketed homes on our own.

Would you say you have a particular style? It’s tough to put a name on a particular style but what we find exciting to build are well-designed, traditionally-inspired modern homes.

What are you hoping for response-wise from a client who is building/renovating with you?

I’m hoping for a client that is thoroughly satisfied and enthusiastic about referring us to their friends and family. It’s important to me personally that we deliver a product that a client is proud to call home.

What are the biggest challenges in building homes today?Managing client expectations in a changing economy

is always a challenge but we are able to overcome them through constant, direct communication and a transparent building process.

Are there specific materials that you prefer working with??The materials that we prefer to work with are the highest quality, proven and rot resistant.

What was the most memorable or impressive project you’ve worked on?

One of the most memorable projects that we have ever worked on was for the Lyles at 66 Riverlawn in Fair Haven. Upon completion the project was published in Design NJ magazine. It’s a Seashore Colonial in which the client, architect and client’s sister (a local interior designer) had a lot of input throughout construction. The home’s exterior was inspired by homes located in Nantucket whereas the inside, though traditionally-

inspired, has a modern feel. I personally like the melding of the two styles.

Do you have any particular heroes? (e.g. architects, engineers, builders or other?)

That’s a tough question. We have a number of great architects and designers locally. Personally, I enjoy the traditionally-inspired homes from New England and Nantucket.

Where do you live? How long? We’ve lived in Fair Haven for 9 years.

Where did you grow up? Middletown.

Anything you’d like to share about your family and/or home life? I have five wonderful kids and a great wife.

There’s a lot to like about Monmouth County – the present and the past. As head of both the Monmouth County Historical Association and The Women’s Council of the Leon Hess Cancer Center, Claire Knopf has been helping to protect the past and ensure the futures of Monmouth County residents.

Since moving from New York City to Monmouth County nearly 30 years ago, Claire and her husband Woody, of Knopf Automotive, have found the perfect niche in their community and their home, Old Oaks, in Rumson.

“This has everything we wanted,” she says. “It’s on the river, it has the ocean and it’s close to New York. …Rumson is an ideal place to raise a family.”

As an ardent supporter of countless charities and organizations, Claire’s name is a familiar one. She can easily be found leading a board or lending a hand throughout the county.

Although her desire to help is homegrown – she says perhaps it was her mother’s career as a nurse that inspired her – she credits the Junior League of Monmouth County for the skills she developed fundraising, organizing and creating some of the county’s most

recognized and benevolent organizations. “That’s where I received my training,” she says. “The Junior League of Monmouth County was the vehicle that allowed me to be effective. Every request made, I had to step up and learn something new.”

Through the Junior League and her children’s school, The Rumson Country Day School, she found a network of friends and a lifelong connection to causes such as Monmouth Day Care Center, Visiting Nurse Association, Monmouth Conservation Foundation and Horizons.

When they arrived in Monmouth County, Claire and Woody first lived in Colts Neck and started raising their family of three children, now in their 20s.

When the Knopfs found Old Oaks – the former Gen. Howard S. Borden’s property on River Road in Rumson – they set about building the home they wanted. While living for three years in the existing outdated house, with no air-conditioning and three small children underfoot, they created the luxury home in front of the original house.

The riverfront property makes for great entertaining. “We do

a lot of entertaining,” says Claire, “with friends, family and extended family.” Their daughters, Catherine, 27, living in San Diego, and Elizabeth, 25, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, and a son James, 21, a rising junior at Fairfield University in Connecticut, often come home with friends.

As president of the Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) Board of trustees for the past four years, Claire, who has been involved with the association for 14 years, is its 20th president. “I work with a terrific group of people,” she says. “We are accomplishing a lot and we’re accomplishing it together.”

MCHA owns five historic homes, open for public viewing, and 30,000 artifacts, which are used for exhibits and to decorate the houses.

“I think we’re bringing MCHA into the public eye, but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” says Claire.

She is proud of the association’s museum, its permanent and rotating exhibitions, and its recent collaboration with Morven Museum and Garden in Princeton.

Another endeavor close to her heart is the MCHA’s commitment to education, taking history into the classrooms. “Education is important,” according to Claire, who holds a degree in secondary education from Boston University.

The MCHA also actively partners with smaller historical societies and historic sites. “For example, we are working with the board and volunteers at The Parker Homestead-1665 to raise badly needed preservation funds and to help build capacity of this new nonprofit organization,” says Claire.

In the 1990s, the Knopfs had an opportunity to relocate to Los Angeles but Claire was adamant about staying. “I wanted to raise our children in a community that had history – historical buildings, homes and families with deep roots in Monmouth County who had been here for generations.

“Everywhere you turn there is history,” says Claire. “And saving history is important.”

In her other role, as chairperson of The Women’s Council for the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Claire is equally devoted. The council, created in 1995 to inform women about the importance of early detection of cancer, has evolved into a well-known fundraising organization that offers cancer education, support and services to the community.

Recently, Claire and Woody hosted the annual Power of Pink

luncheon, which featured Arianna Huffington (pictured far left) as the guest speaker, at their home.

Despite the pink hue, Claire reminds, “It’s not just about breast cancer.” She points out that men and women – survivors and supporters – come together to raise awareness and money for research.

“We’ve done a lot,” she says of the council – which gives directly to the Leon Hess Cancer Center for all cancers – and cites just a few examples: “We have given to the tomotherapy patient waiting room, a patient navigator space, and $1/2 million for a patient infusion unit,” she says.

In addition, a Spa for Spirit program, held twice a year, treats 15 to 20 women, current cancer patients, to a day of pampering.“Over the years, we’ve raised $2.8 million for Monmouth Medical Center,” Claire says.

It all makes for a busy schedule of meetings, fundraising and getting things done. In her spare time, Claire enjoys cooking, traveling and spending time with her family.

She sees nothing unusual about her commitment and dedication to the causes close to her heart – and close to her friends’ hearts. “That’s what our community is known for,” she says. “Everyone is caring and giving. Everyone is organizing and participating.

“I see myself as part of the infrastructure of my community and I believe that if we all take care of one another in our own backyard, so to speak, it can trickle up to make the world a better place,” she says.

“And I think Rumson is the best kept secret. My family and I are fortunate to have found it.”
