Project Name Los Angeles SuiteProject Loca on Los Angeles, CAClient Gavin de Becker & AssociatesStatus Plan Approved

Los Angeles Suite is a private terminal to shield celebri es from the indigni es of paparazzi photos and encoun-ters with—or even just the mere sight of—the general public.A cargo hanger is redeveloped into a VIP access terminal. Celebri es and diplomats will be driven into a covered entrance before entering a terminal with its own security line, passport controls, and lounges. Once inside, they could relax in the lounge’s private suites un l their boarding mes. When it’s me to board, a service will drive passengers directly to the plane, where they’ll board fi rst class before anyone else.Gavin de Becker & Associates, a celebrity security fi rm, will run the 43,750-square-foot terminal and 13,840-square-foot parking lot, which is expected to bring in $3.7 million in extra revenue to LAX within its fi rst year and $34 million within the 10-year lease.

Project Name Automated People Mover (APM)Project Loca on Los Angeles, CA Client LAWA Status Planing

APM system aims to connect passengers from a Consolidated Rent-A-Car Center (CONRAC), to an Intermodal Transporta on Facility (ITF) and then to the Central Terminal Area of the Los Angeles Interna onal Airport (LAX).The APM will be approximately two miles long and will include six sta ons – three in the Central Terminal Area and three outside of the airport at other LAWA facili es such as the CONRAC and ITF.The APM system will be fully automated and grade separated from pedestrians and other vehicles. It will be designed for passengers with luggage and allow for reliable access to the airport. Each sta on within the Central Terminal Area will connect to moving walkways to ensure passengers can get to their terminals quickly.

ACM’s role was to validate the loca on of the terminal interfaces for the APM Pedways and assess a variety of opportuni es and constraints at each of the terminal interface loca ons. The varia ons include the depth of the exis ng buildings, the exis ng layout as compared to the layout as defi ned in long range plans, and the number of exis ng stories at each of the terminals. The ver cal core design will have to address these varia ons in exist-ing condi ons while a emp ng to be consistently iconic so these ver cal cores can be easily recognized by all passengers as their gateway to the APM system. The loca on of these ver cal cores must be visually prominent so that wayfi nding for the passengers will be intui ve.

Project Name Terminal 7 RedevelopmentProject Loca on Los Angeles, CA Client LAWA Status Design Development

In an eff ort to improve passenger experience and to modernize the security screening at Terminals 6, 7, and 8, United Airlines and LAWA embarked on a $200 million renova on project. This project will include the upgrade of many of the buildings’ systems as well as the renova on of public space within the terminal buildings. The primary component of this renova on was the consoida on of the various passenger screen-ing areas located in Terminal 7 into on large check point on the concourse level. An addi onal screening area was maintained on the cke ng level to provide a higher level of service for fi rst class passengers as well as overfl ow during peak hours. As a result of the expan-sion, many exis ng facili es including the Club Lounge were displaced and had to be relocated into new fl oors built above he security checkpoint expansion.

Project Name Unfrozen Music - Architects in ConcertProject Loca on Santa Monica Public Library Created by Craig Shimahara of Shimahara Illustra on The annal concert series, created by Craig Shimahara, is named Unfrozen Music in reference to a quote from nineteenth century German theorist, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who stated, “I consider architecturee frozen music.” “Architects are passionate pople, and that passion o en pours out through mul ple channels of expression.” said Craig. “A er listening to an architect play a violin solo. It’s fun to imagine what kind of buildings he or she might design.” Unfrozen Music is a free music concert of architects playing their talent on stage. A fun family community event featuring an eclec c array of music from classical to blues.

My collegue and I were invited to perform at their fi h annual Unfrozen Music concert, which was a perfor-mance by a collec on of LA architects. What once was a dream became a reality. A er not having played the piano for several years, I began prac cing day and night for two months before the concert. Alique Pempejian on the violin and I on the piano performed our own rendi on of ‘Time’ from the movie Incep on in collabora on with photographs of ‘Faces of Water’ provided by ar st Moses Hacmon.
