What is this career exactly?

• Portfolio managers are some of the most important factors to consider when looking at fund investing.

• Private manager- will probably be dealing with private investors rather than institutions such as: insurance companies, pension funds, and corporations.

• Corporate manager- will probably be dealing with more institutions such as those above and sot so much with private investors.

Educational Needs

• Must have at least a bachelor’s degree in finance or economics.

• Must have taken courses in bond valuations, capital markets and interest rates. Or, courses in financial statement analysis, equity strategies, portfolio management, international economics and trade, and computer research.

• Many portfolio managers have masters in business administration, also having a concentration in finance or economics.

• Most who are looking into this career must also have the (CFA), Charter Financial Analyst designation.

• (CFA)- is a self-study program run by a (CFA) institute that will take about three years or so to complete.

• Many portfolio managers start out on a team of research analysts, analyzing certain segments of a given industry.

• In this job, the analyst will research individual companies, and then write industry reports for portfolio managers to read and consider.

• Analysts can move on to writing research reports on individual companies.

• These reports will be used to decide whether to buy a company's stock or bonds, but first they need the experience.
