FOR GOTT EN is the work chosen by the international fellowship program Studio 14 to reflect its theme, “What happened to God?” This work represents our incessant questions about God in four expressive ways: video, photography, installation, and art book. The time of sorrow ----- Where is God? Chan Sook Choi begins with the desperate outcry of Habakkuk the prophet recorded in the Bible a few thousands years ago and from the text of A Grief Observed carrying the true confession of novelist C.S. Lewis who had lost his beloved wife. Those who question God reach different conclusions, and the reason ques-tions continue is because of the human dilemma of inescapable oblivion.

A fear of being forgotten ----- The video shows what belief and a solid link with God to overcome such fears means through special interviews with Leipzig women between 70 and 90 years of age who re-mained steadfast in their beliefs under the former East German government that suppressed freedom of religion.

The artist produced a film for each woman, based on information gathered from them through inter-views. The films are projected in their homes through a portable installation”Dein Auge ist das Fenster deines Körpers” The artist sought to document the process of their appreciation of the films. Their faces of the women while they watch the films contain indescribable emotional energy, posing the question “Are we really forgotten by God or Is God forgotten by us?”

국제펠로우쉽프로그램 STUDIO14의 테마 “What happened to God?” 의 선정작품인 “For Gott en”은 프로젝트의 과정 자체가 담겨있는 4가지 표현 형식 비디오,사진,설치,아트북 으로서 끊임없이 반복되는 신을향한 인간의 끊임없는 질문들을 망각의 시점에서 풀어낸 작업이다. 슬품의 시간…신은과연 어디있는가…작가는 몇천년전 기록된 성경의 선지자 하박국의 처절한 울부짖음에서부터 사랑하는 아내를 읽은 작가 C.S 루이스의 진실한 고백이담긴 “헤아려본 슬픔 (A Grief Observed) “ 과 같은 텍스트에서 부터 시작한다. 신에게 질문을 던진자는 각자 다른 방법으로 결론에 도달하지만,계속 반복되는 질문의 이유는 바로 망각이라는 인간의 딜레마에 있다.

잊혀지는 것에 대한 두려움.. 그 두려움을 극복하는 믿음이라는 굳건한 신과의 연결고리가 뜻하는 것이 무엇인지 구 동독정권의 종교탄압속에서 믿음을 지켜온 70-90세 이상의 라이프찌히 여성들과의 특별한 인터뷰를 통해 보여주고 있다.작가는 이들과의 사전인터뷰를 통해 교감한 정보들을 토대로 각 여성 개인을 위한 필름을 만든다. 만들어진 필름은 마치 가마와 같은 이동식 설치물 “Dein Auge ist das Fenster deines Koerpers“을 통해 여성의 사적공간인 집에서 상영되며, 이 필름을 감상하는 것을 도큐멘테이션하는 것이 바로 작가의 커뮤니케이션 결과이다. 필름을 감상하는동안 관찰되어지는 여성의 얼굴은 언어로 표현할 수 없는 감성적 에너지를 담고있으며, 한 개인의 믿음에 대한 고찰과 함께 과연 우리는 신으로 부터 잊혀졌는가… 아님 신이 우리로 부터 잊혀졌는가? 라는 질문을 던지고 있다.

Thema Glaube und Zweifel: In meinen Arbeiten zu diesem Thema beschäftige ich mich mit der Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Gott, dem Glaube, dem Zweifel und dem Vergessen. Dabei hängen Vergessen und Erin-nerung und Vergessen und Abschied oder Vergessen und Trauer zusammen – die Trauer des Zurückbleibens. Mitverhandelt wird in diesem Kontext auch Krise der Rolle des Christentums in säkularen Staaten und dem Interesse an Religion als sozialer Kit in der aktuellen Debatte um das Verhältnis von Politik und Christentum.

An environment with desolate, imperfect, old traces and people wandering, through three video channels, look likes a world where false and real images coexist. Each channel and stage in a performance involves planned physical language and collage. Each video scene alludes to human solitude and existential feeling in space.

「Folgen der Spur」(흔적을 따라가다)는 무의식중에 기록되고 있는 무수한 시간의 흔적과 모든 만남의 경계에 생기는 관계의 흔적에 집중한 작가의 프로토콜적 시리즈 작품이다.관찰의 과정은 일상의 우연성과 물리적 현상을 교차시킨다.작가는 특정 인물사진이 일정 조건속 정해진 시간 동안 화학적으로 용해되는 과정과 이와 상관없이 항상 지속되는 작가의 일상을 정밀하게 기록, 일상과 시간의 흔적을 교차시켜 변하는 것과 변치 않는 것 사이 자아의 실존을 탐색하고 있다.

1218 regards December 18, when the artist’s mother passed away, as a temporal border between genres and a common code of death. The artist asked dancers Minako Seki and Yuko Kaseki to cho-reograph a dance based on 18 sentences in 12 letters sent them by the artist. The artist works with a symbolic language combining life and death, projecting the dancers’ gestures taken in different stages onto a monitor. This work is a composite of language’s symbolic meaning and performance. The 12 letters with 18 sentences, used as a means of communication in 1218, link art genres with a language system under the theme of ‘death’, so ‘letter’ means both ‘character’ and ‘letter’. Many experience difficulty in communication using different ways of expression: here, the letters become the medium to experience the limits of expressive language.

작가모친의 기일인, 12월 18일을 각 장르의 시간적 경계의 조건이자 죽음에 관한공통적 코드로 삼은 작품 「1218」작가는 두 무용수(미나코 세키, 유코 카세키) 에게 각각12통의 편지를 보내 18개의 함축적 문장을 토대로 무용수 스스로 안무를 짜게 한 후, 각기 다른 세트에서 촬영한 두 무용수의 몸짓을 한 화면에 투영시켜, 삶과 죽음이 합체되는 상징적 언어를 구현해냈다.언어의 상징적 의미, 퍼포먼스, 공감각적 매체를 통합하는 종합예술적(Gesamtkunstwerk) 작업이다.1218의 Communication도구로 사용된 Letters는 (18문장을 담은 12통의 편지)단어 letters가 가지는 이중적 의미, “문자”와 “편지”와 같이, Letters는 문자적 메세지인 동시에 죽음을 주제로 모인 서로다른 언어양식을 가진 예술과와의 연결고리를 이어주는 핵심적 역활을하고 있다. 각자 시간이란 공통재료를 사용하고 있지만, 서로 다른 표현방식에서오는 소통의 어려움 가운데 Letters는 자신의 표현언어에대해 더 많은 한계와 그 경계를 체험할 수 있는 매게체가 되고 있다.

3개의 비디오 채널을 통해 황량하면서도 불완전하고, 또 오래된 흔적을 담은 환경과 그 곳을 배회하는 사람의 모습은 마치 허상과 실상이 공존하는 꿈의 셰계와같다. 각 장면은 철저히 계획되어진 신체언어와 콜라쥬를 통해 각 채널은 마치 퍼포먼스의 무대로 변한다. 각자 주어진 공간안에 흐느끼는 인간의 고독과 존재의 미약함에 대해 이야기 한다.

Symbolism and narrative expression in Parallel Portrait (2008) describes three figures in different space-time through three video channels. This work alludes to a subtle existential solitude between other and self, interweaving each of their fates exquisitely.

「Parallel Portrait」 (병렬의 초상) 은 심볼리즘과 서사적 표현이 적극적이다.이 작품은 3개의 비디오채널을 통해 세 명의 인물들을 각기 다른 시공간에 배치,서로의 운명을 교묘하게 뒤얽히게 함으로써, 자아와 타자의 관계속에 미묘하지만 병렬상에 존재하는 인간의 실존적 고독에 대해 이야기하고 있다
