ALThe following displays are a collection of various projects I have had significant impact in their development while at KCCT. I am fortunate to have participated in all levels of design, from site analysis & conceptualization to construction documents. From these projects I have attempted to provide a diverse sampling of work done under various design phases.

This collection is a mix of final product and design process. I have included design process primarily to show ideas I proposed along the way - some of them carrying through in one form or another, others being abandoned due to cost, feasibility, or client preference.

Most graphics shown are my own product, or have had significant contribution on my part.

KCCT was contracted with the uS department of State to provide designs for a new embassy campus (nEC) in Malabo. The green-field site was programmed for a new chancery and support functions, as well as on-campus housing for diplomats and staff.

ConCEpT

My role in this project was to take several buildings from design development to full construction documents. While the basic massing concepts were figured out, many material and detailing decisions still had to be executed, particularly on the interiors.

The design intended to marry traditional stucco forms found in the contextual vernacular with representational elements highlighted by locally-sourced wood rain-screens. a signature move I executed was carrying a hardwood clad wall through the building on the outside to the inside, and carefully detailing its varying conditions.

KCCT provided design development to the uS department of State for a new embassy campus (nEC) in Mbabane. Client architects requested to place a simple, rectangular box on the large, sloping, rural site.

ConCEpT

This project went from a schematic concept to it’s final submittal in a very short amount of time. My involvement was from a very early stage and included helping to shape some of the initial design schemes.

With the desire of having the form be a large rectangular box, the design team’s first approach was to select a main material - terra-cotta was chosen, inspired by the color of the local soil. Early versions of the concept had a roof ‘hood’ that provided shading as well as means of visually breaking down the mass. In the end, this was removed, as the client decided to emphasize the mass of the building. Changing thickness of the terra-cotta rain-screen and the use of baguettes were later tactics for addressing this issue.

KCCT provided design development to the uS department of State for a new embassy campus (nEC) in port Moresby. The Embassy was to use a standard, pre-designed building, but the client soon realized they wanted the building to have more uniqueness to its site and incorporate some contextual elements.

ConCEpT

My role in this design was mostly at the schematic level, addressing how we could work with the provided designs to bring an appropriate level of uniqueness to them and fit them to this site. The original design included a large wall dividing representational spaces from functional ones, so we extended that and incorporated it as an organizational site element, cladding it in natural copper.

additionally, I recommended the use of tensile fabric, an inspiration from the sailboats that frequent the city’s marinas. The tensile fabric was to help with shading the roof from heat gain, adding a strong visual element to the roof line, and also correlating with its use on the site’s covered parking and recreational pavilion.

The State department recently acquired a historical parcel of property adjacent to their main headquarters in Foggy Bottom. The site has many historical buildings including dC’s first astronomical observatory, naval hospital buildings designed by Ernest Flagg, and several buildings built for the national Institute of Health.

ConCEpT

Though this project was limited to being only a feasibility study, we were encouraged by the client to develop our studies a bit more thoroughly as though it were a master plan. I participated in the conceptualization of the various site alternatives presented and helped form some of the key concepts for site use and circulation that are currently requirements for the design of the master plan.

The greatest challenge in this exercise was trying to get as much new office space as possible into the space without impacting the integrity of the historic elements in a negative way. I have provided here some of my early conceptual sketches, most of which differ significantly from the proposed development schemes (not shown).
