Reflective Statement

Artifact: Individual Child Study Analysis

PTS 8. Assessment: The teacher understands various formal and informal assessment

strategies and uses them to support the continuous development of all students.

Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and

understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.

This standard is very important for all teachers because it emphasizes assessment is a major

driving force of curriculum. There are many different types of assessment that a teacher must

understand and implement. There is informal assessment, which mainly occurs through

observations or checklists. There is also formal assessment, which is evaluated and recorded.

According to the standard, a teacher must work with all types of assessment to match instruction.

A competent teacher understands the how and why of assessment. Understanding how

assessment works involves recognizing various methods and their accompanied theories. It also

means recognizing test bias, test regulations, test reliability and test validity. Assessment must

align with the Illinois State Learning Standards, as well. Regarding the why component of

assessment, a teacher must be able understand that assessment shapes learning. He or she can can

mark progress and create goals that meet student needs.

Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

 standard.

The artifacts I chose is an individual child study that examines a student’s literacy developing.

Throughout the project, I gathered information from multiple sources to determine future

instructional steps for the student. I completed running records, letter and sound identification

tests, writing samples, sight word recall tests, reading conferences, and reader interest surveys.

Thus, I included both formal and informal assessment strategies. I analyzed the data I collected. I

diagnosed the student’s current level through collaborating with my co-op, the school reading

specialist, and research by “experts.” Using this information, I created specific learning goals

that consider the student’s strengths and needs. I referenced the Illinois Common Core Standards

and district standards. I organized all of my information into a portfolio so I could visually see

student progress and make note of it. Also, the standard addresses understanding assessment in

relation to students with special needs. The student I evaluated is diagnosed as high anxiety. This

was something I needed to consider in developing proper learning goals.

A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in the

future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

The assessment I completed was an assignment that also had use in my classroom. Because I

completed this study, I am better aware of how to plan and use assessment. Many of the formal

assessments I completed, like running records, require knowledge and experience. Because I

leaned about running records in my professional classes and completed several records at my

site, I feel competent and comfortable doing some in the future. Also, I have an understanding of

individualized assessment and learning goals. In order to meet the needs of my future students, I

will need to evaluate them as individuals. This one study gave me an idea of what that will be

like. In my classroom, I will be expected to communicate assessment results and goals with the

student, parents, and administration. The work I did for the project mirrors what I will do in the

future.

Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

I think understanding this standard prepares me to teach and learn in a diverse society because it

helps me focus on student progress and growth individually. I learned there are many types of

assessment, all of which should be used thoughtfully. In analyzing data, a teacher must consider

diverse learning styles and how they may respond to assessment styles. Additionally, I

completed this assignment with a child who has an emotional disorder. In the future, I will have

similar students in my class. Focusing on assessment, I had to consider how my student would

react to the processes and goals I was expected him to participate in. Not every student will react

to assessment in the same way.
