Dear friend,

I'm a seasoned, award-winning creative guru and a passionate leader with a proven track

record for translating complex ideas into slick, successful campaigns. I’ve managed and

motivated teams and become the go-to, ‘A-list’ hotshot.

I’ve built and managed brands from the ground up, worn every hat on the rack, and never

cease to surprise myself of what is really possible in a day’s work.

This booklet will allow you to catch a glimpse of some of the work I have done over the years.

Don’t let this little booklet fool you; this is only the beginning.

Enjoy.

Product Type Assessment

MeasuresPreference for one of four leadership styles

Time Required1 hour

Using leadership style to get others to follow.Effective leadership at every level, from frontline supervisors to top executives, is a key characteristic of successful organizations. The statement Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard made years ago still applies today: effective leaders positively influence the behavior of their followers, getting them to work toward shared goals.

But leaders are individuals, and because of that, they influence others in unique ways. While one leader rallies troops around a cause, another focuses on bolstering a team’s self-confidence. Whose way of leading is the best? It all depends on the situation—and the leaders’ ability to flex their leadership style.

What’s My Leadership Style is a learning tool for anyone who needs to influence others toward achieving a goal. This best-selling assessment quickly and accurately identifies a preference for one of four styles: Direct, Spirited, Considerate, or Systematic.

Learning Outcomes• Identify personal leadership style• Learn how to capitalize on style strengths• Discover how to minimize style trouble spots• Learn how to “flex” personal style to interact more

effectively with others

Download the complete Theoretical Background at HRDQstore.comFirst time facilitating the assessment? QuickStart Training will prepare you for your first class. Personalized, one-on-one telephone coaching is provided at your convenience. It includes an overview of the assessment’s theory and model, facilitation tips, typical participant reactions, and more.

Leaders with style knowledge are better equipped to assess and adjust their actions, interpret the behavior of others, and improve their ability to respond effectively in any situation.

“The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority.”

—Ken Blanchard

It all boils down to four words. The power behind What’s My Leadership Style lies in its simple but effective HRDQ Style Model. Based on the proven personality theories of Marston and Jung, the style model defines personal style in four terms: Direct, Spirited, Considerate, and Systematic. The simplicity makes it easy for trainers to facilitate—and memorable for individuals.

NOTES Introduce Jungle Escape Time: 10 minutes

Slide: 1

Materials: Parts bags; Observer Worksheet

Objective: Introduce the activity

Preparation: Have Welcome slide displayed before the start of the work-shop. Create a name tent for yourself. Have all slides and flipcharts prepared well in advance and spend the time before the workshop welcoming and greeting participants individually as they arrive.

1. Show Slide 1: Welcome.

2. Welcome participants to Jungle Escape. Introduce yourself.

3. Introduce the activity:

You are about to embark on an adventure that will give you an opportunity to work together in your teams.

Play the introductory scenario clip found on the CD-ROM or read the scenario below:

Imagine that you have crash-landed in a jungle while on a mission to deliver helicopter parts to a secret military base. Unfortunately, your chances of being located and rescued are minimal. The crew has managed to salvage the helicopter parts, and you may be able to construct an escape chopper.

4. Explain: For this activity, I’d like one person from each team to volunteer to be an Observer. While I give the Observers instructions on the activity, the rest of you may clear your area so that you will have room to work.

5. Ask Observers to join you out of hearing distance from the teams. Explain:

Your team will build a helicopter using the provided parts. They will have various pieces of information to help them do so.

Your role is to observe the dynamics of the group and to take notes, which will be used in a later discussion.

Scenario video included on CD

20 Jungle Escape Section 3: Workshop

NOTES 6. Distribute an Observer Worksheet to each Observer. Explain:

Record two separate times during the activity: Planning Time and Assembly Time. The groups will be told only that the Assembly Time is being clocked. When I say, “Start,” enter the time in the Planning

Time space. When your group indicates that it is ready to begin

assembling the aircraft, enter the time as the end of the Planning phase and the start of the Assembly Time.

When I have deemed the helicopter airworthy, enter that time as the end of the Assembly phase.

During the activity, make notes on what you are observing using the questions on the worksheet.

Help me to ensure that your group is following the activity’s Ground Rules, which will be posted on a PowerPoint slide.

When your group finishes, privately give me your group’s Planning and Assembly Times.

Do not reveal anything to your team until I instruct you to do so.

7. Have Observers return to their groups. Explain to the teams that each Observer has been asked to take some notes while the team is working.

8. Distribute one parts bag to each group. Explain:

Open your parts bag and distribute the pieces randomly and as evenly as possible among team members.

Do not start assembling yet!

Created a introduction & assembly video designed to help facilitate Jungle Escape.

Goal: Up the production value of HRDQ's top selling product for the 30th anniversary edition.

Solution: Upgrade black and white printed materials by introducing color, photographs, and larger print for increased readabiliy.

HRDQ's Rocket is a construction based game aimed at teaching project and time management skills.

Rocket by HRDQPrint Product Design >

Page 21: Portfolio Snapshot

These days, everyone must play the role of project manager; it’s no longer just the domain of the specialist. But that doesn’t mean it’s time to run out and get certified, read Gantt charts, or employ the Critical Path Method. Instead, what’s really needed is a basic, solid skill set that can be applied to everyday work.

Here’s the training solution that provides the right amount of insight. New from subject matter expert Lou Russell, Rocket: The Project Management Game is a competitive team simulation that emphasizes simple, fast, and flexible techniques for ensuring project success.

Faced with the challenge of building—you guessed it—a rocket, players must figure out how to assemble it on budget, on time, and to spec. But the client’s expectations are unclear and resources are limited, and you’ve never managed a project before. Sound familiar? That’s the idea. Rocket replicates real-world demands so players experience firsthand the skills they need to manage projects effectively, overcome obstacles, and leverage their personal strengths. And maybe even have some fun at the same time.

About the AuthorA well-respected speaker, consultant, and expert in the field of project management, Lou Russell is the CEO of both Russell Martin & Associates and L+Earn. She is the author of six popular books, including Leadership Training and 10 Steps to Successful Project Management, and a frequent contributor to Computer World, Cutter Executive Reports, and Network World, among others. Lou has spoken at over 300 conferences including the ASTD International Conference, Training Conference, and the Project Management Institute Conference. In addition to her years of experience, Lou holds a BS in Computer Science from Purdue University and an MS in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University.Lou Russell

16 1716 1716 | Rocket: The Project Management Game

notes:12. As each team is fi nished, go over to that team and tell

them that you will now review the quality of their rocket.

Take the blueprint and go over the rocket, making sure

that:

• All of the frame pieces are in the right place.

• The screws are all facing the SAME WAY.

• All frame pieces are leveled correctly. Go through each

intersection using the blueprint to make sure the frame

pieces are leveled correctly.

As soon as you fi nd one or two mistakes, explain to the

team what the mistakes are and ask them to fi x those

and any other issues. Let them know that you are not

happy and that you expect a perfect product. Tell them

that the clock is still ticking.

Several teams may be ready around the same time. Keep track of the order that they fi nish and review their projects in that order. Some people may become impatient but this is a good learn-ing moment, especially if they are past their estimated comple-tion time or deadline. In the real world, the client may not always be readily available.

Participants may complain that these things are not clear from the blueprint. Do not respond; save your comments on this for the debrief. This is another important learning point, as it is a common communication issue between customers and project teams.

16 Section 4: Debrief & Wrap-Up | 21

notes:• Lack of building skills

o Did you have people on your team who are naturally good at building things?

o Could you have organized the work differently to make the best of each team member’s talents?

• Hurt feelings

o Did members of your team work well together or turn on each other?

o Were fingers pointed when your team experienced failure?

Page 23: Portfolio Snapshot

You know firsthand what the Air Service needs in its aircraft — heck, you’ve flown the covert operations yourself. Now, as the military Commander of the Air Service, you’re about to take part in the most challenging mission of all: a top-secret meeting with the Heads of the Land and Sea Services to replace an aging fleet of strike fighter jets with just a single model. While you want to fight for the sole interests of the Air Service, you know it could cause you to win the battle… but lose the war. Instead, you must engage your well-honed negotiating skills and collaborate.

Practice makes perfect. Before the people in your organization attempt to maneuver through real-world negotiations, give them the opportunity to practice their skills in the safety of the classroom with action-packed simulation, Strike Fighter. The winner of the NASAGA game design competition, this learning-rich experience is aimed at helping individuals become more competent and confident negotiators by teaching a solid start-to-finish strategy. It’s a powerful way to surface strengths and weaknesses, and answer the question: Is the way I approach negotiating successful, and if not, what do I need to change?

Table 1, Outcome vs. Relationship

DEFEATWhen a high degree of concern is expressed for the outcome of the negotiation and a low degree of concern is expressed for the relationship with the other party, a Defeat behavior pattern is produced. This pattern is characterized by win-lose competition, pressure, intimidation, adversarial relationships, and the negotiator attempting to get as much as possible for him- or herself. Defeating the other party at any cost becomes the negotiator’s goal.

WITHDRAWWhen a low degree of concern for both the outcome of the negotiation and the relationship with the other party is expressed, a Withdraw behavior pattern is produced. The pattern is characterized by feelings of powerlessness, indifference to the outcome, resignation, surrender, and taking whatever the other party is willing to concede. Withdrawing and removing oneself becomes the behavior of the negotiator.

ACCOMMODATEWhen the focus is on building a compatible relationship in the hope that the negotiation will be successful, an Accommodate behavior pattern is produced. This pattern is characterized by efforts to promote harmony, avoidance of substantive differences, yielding to pressure to preserve the relationship, and placing interpersonal relationships above the fairness of the outcome. Accommodating the other party’s needs becomes the negotiator’s style.

COMPROMISEWhen a moderate degree of concern for both dimensions of negotiating behavior is expressed, a Compromise behavior pattern is produced. This pattern is characterized by compromise, meeting the other party halfway, looking for trade-offs, splitting the difference, and other halfway measures. Conflict reduction is valued over synergistic problem solving. Finding an acceptable agreement is the objective of this negotiator’s style.

COLLABORATEWhen a high degree of concern for both the outcome of the negotiation and the relationship with the other party is expressed, a Collaborate behavior pattern is produced. This pattern is characterized by searching for common interests with the other party, problem-solving behavior, and recognizing that both parties must get their needs satisfied for the outcome to be entirely successful. Collaborative behavior and synergistic solutions are the result. Working to build a win-win outcome is the main goal of the negotiator.

Hermes Creative Award Winner Gold Award Winner for original packaging design.

Yesterday, an idea—today, a sale at national book stores. Coordinated marketing and production efforts to successfully deliver American Reading Company’s first direct-to-consumer product. Involved with KidPack from the conception to the delivery of 4,500 KidPack units. Designed packaging, managed production, and created marketing materials to support the new product.

Goal: Provide literacy product in an underdeveloped segment of the retail market.

Solution: Used in-house expertise to develop an educational product that delivers value to parents seeking reading solutions for their early readers.

Challenges: Manufacturing a product overseas that is fun, safe, and appealing to both parents and young readers.

Adding a hang-tag to the KidPack product increased consumer interest and informed potential buyers of product benefits.

Living Organisms vs. Nonliving Objects,Animal GroupsWeek 1, Day 1

Background InformationLiving Organisms and Nonliving ObjectsIn order for things to be characterized as living organisms, they must possess every one of the following characteristics.

Living things obtain and use energy. •Living things grow and develop.•Living things reproduce.•Living things respond to their environment. •Living things adapt to their environment. •Living things are made of cells.•All living organisms are either animals or plants.•

Nonliving objects were never alive. (A dead animal, a leaf, tree bark, etc. are not nonliving objects. They are deceased, once-living organisms.)

Prior to the 1600’s many people believed that nonliving things could spontaneously turn into living things. For example, it was believed that piles of straw could turn into mice.

interacting With Other Communication StylesMisunderstandings are often a result of style differences. For example, a Spirited person and a Systematic person may have tense interactions because of the different speeds at which they make decisions. Although each of us has a predominant personality style that drives our behavior and our communication, we must learn to be flexible so that we can communicate with people whose personality styles vary from our own. The first step is to learn how to identify another person’s style.

How to Speed Read Communication StyleOnce you can identify another person’s style, you can adapt behavior to accommodate that person. This will make that person feel more at ease, and it helps you both achieve your goals more readily. For example, it will be much easier to convince a Systematic person to accept a decision if you are armed with concrete facts rather than general impressions. Even if you are a Spirited person who prefers general impressions, it will serve you well to be flexible in this situation and offer those details.

The chart below offers some clues that will help you quickly identify another person’s communication style:
