Optimalization of the interaction & materials

Commercial product

ECO DESIGN AWARD - THERMOSTATPurpose of the contract: redesign an electrical device that in active use, will use less energy.

The user is user is unable to control the temperature correctly (you just know “I’m cold/hot”)

- most people put a higher temperature because they think it will heat up faster (most boilers = on/off system)- leaving the house / appartment without knowing that that heating system is still on (no notice of the status whether it is working , in a temporary pauze or off.)- interface of the thermostat is too complex to operate, not user friendly at all

The actual room thermostat os composed of many different parts and materials

If none is detected by the sensor, only temperature When someone approaches the thermostat, the When setting an appropiate temperature, just slice. and status light up. display will light up. This allow to save a lot of Direct feedback is giving with the corresponding energy time needed to heat the space.

The action can be considered an may or may not be When the system is active (running or in a temporary confirmed. pauze) the symbol lights up on the user receive clear direct feedback.

ABOVE GROUND SHELTER FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTPurpose of the contract: thesis in association with Enthoven Associates and STIB/MIVB

Interactive screen consists of a combination:transparent (AM)OLED and a poster at the back. The screen in combination with a multifunctional reader allows payments, ... . But also tourist informationcan be optained, route can be determined, ...

The contstruction consists of an hollow aluminium profile which be fold into an style of Art Nouveau. The profile serves as comformation in which the glass,PMMA and other parts can be integrated. Because ofit’s shape and the fact that it’s hollow a small change had to be made to evacuate water.

Page 6: Portifolio(english)

ABOVE GROUND SHELTER PUBLIC TRANSPORT

For the construction a hollow aluminium profile is folded to an Art Nouveau shape. This style leans very close against the current corporate identity of the MIVB/STIB, where the tram, bus and underground movement is already equipped with this style.

Once folded, a section has to be removed to drain the water. After that no further need is provided to drain the water. This not only makes the construction look likebut also offers a lower cost, ...

As a summery we can say that the profiles are inexpensive to manufacture, mono-material construction and offer good vanalism resistancy.

What is visible for the passengers. A poster in the background Tansparent (AM)OLED display that overexpose.

The transparant (AM)OLED layer allows customers to interact costumers: where am I? When will the next bus arrives? What is the best route to go to? ... . Also tourist information can be achieved with this infotainment system. That in combination with a multifunctional reader allows costumer to identify themself and/or the pay for several applictaions: bus/tram/underground ticket, access in the subway/musea, bicycle and car rental, .... The application are numerous for example pan function allows wheelchair user to interact with the map, tourist places are shown on the map and short contents may be requested, ... . In summery the screen provides the ideal opportunity to keep information in the background and to play with several focus points on the map.

Combining a poster and a transparent screen of 120 x 80 cm consumes 10 times less energy than a standard 15 inch TFT or LCD.

More information can be found in my thesis and final presentation.

BOGIE PRESENTATION - TECHNOLOGYObjet de la mission: pour le cours de “conception technologique”, il a été demandé d’avoir une approche technique d’un produit existant et d’en faire la presentation.

BOGIE PRESENTATION - TECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

Ease of access is limited because the tram motors are placed upon the bogies frame, with cause a high floor height. The large difference/gab of the wheels is the source of shock and severe wear of the rails due to bad behavior in curves.Poor comfort due to suspensions of lower quality. From an environmental perspective: limited capacity of the vehicle, high energy consumption, high rate of vibration and nuisancesound in tight corners, ....Many maintenance levels of reliability and safety due to low basic architecture and low flexibility.

A high floor height, comfort mediocre and only few passenger seats.

A high floor height, comfort mediocre and only few passenger seats.

Better accessibility and convenience with engines that are on the outer flanks of the bogies (consistent with the floors below)Passenger comfort is enhanced by a stronger suspension system.Best environmental performance, increased capacity, reduced vibration and noise in the tight curves, ... .Architecture is more efficient and flexible which leads to a higher levels of reliability, increased security and enables more efficient maintenance. The wear tracks and wheels are reduced to a minimum, so to forms with contains a no longer risk of derailment.

Trams of the current generation put more overriding on the cassis -> a new type of bogie is required

A contempory tram must meet new requirements.

During my bachelor test the concept remained the same but a different manufacturing technique was sought to ensure the seal. The result led to “Metal Spinning” or “Sheet Metal Forming” which guarantees a life of great and affordable alternative to its large surface area. Finally, a price has been established between Masureel Guy and the production company to achieve a breakeven around three months.

GLASS CONCEPT- AGC

Purpose of the mission: for the course “materials selection” we were asked to place a new medium between the pane of a double glazing. For the prototype, we made use of gelatin. This presentation made a good impression and I was asked to a presentate at AGC.

Pressure on the window changes the texture of gelatin, making the window intransparant - transparant. When no pressure is applied the texture couses a diffraction and when pushed or pulled the texture a flat texture could be achieved with normal vision.
