PORTISHEADTOWN GUIDE

Welcome to Portishead!

The coast and countryside surrounding Portishead is outstandingly beautiful and the hills of the Cotswolds, Mendips and Quantocks are within close proximity.Development has seen the Victorian village of Portishead become a thriving town, but despite its growth, a very special community spirit has been maintained. Residents fiercely protect their heritage along with the town’s beauty and traditions. Visitors marvel at the friendliness of shop-keepers and people they meet in the street and the crime rate remains the second lowest in the West of England. Fifteen miles south along the motorway is the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare, the

administrative centre of North Somerset.Portishead is approximately three miles from junction 19 of the M5 motorway and nine miles from the M4 interchange. This provides easy motorway access for destinations across the whole country. The town is on a main ‘First Bus’ route to and from the centre of Bristol with buses also running to the nearby towns of Clevedon andWeston-super-Mare. A bus runs to the large Cribbs Causeway shopping mall and entertainment centre. There is also a minibus which operates around the town, through the countryside to Tickenham and Nailsea.Although the railway linking

Portishead to Bristol was axed in 1964, a campaign to see the return of the service is extremely active and people in the town are optimistic they will see the reopening of the line in the near future.Bristol International Airport is 10 miles to the south east of Portishead and its continued expansion has seen a rapid increase of scheduled and charter flights to worldwide destinations.Commercial shipping operates out of Royal Portbury Dock on the outskirts of the town and Portishead dock has seen the conversion of a traditional deep-water dock in to a stunning new marina housing more than 250 yachts and cabin cruisers.

Portishead is one of the fastest growing towns in Europe and lies within North Somerset on the Bristol Channel coast. It is ten miles from the vibrant City of Bristol and 25 miles from the ancient City of Bath, with Cardiff, the capital city of Wales sitting just across the Channel.

PORTISHEADTOWN GUIDE

Portishead has a long history as a fishing port. Information found in the Domesday Book, completed in 1086, suggests that Portishead then had 13 men living here, farming and fishing. Polished flint axe-heads dating back as far as 2000BC were uncovered at the Lake Grounds and visible evidence remains of Iron Age settlements around the hills of the Gordano Valley, including Woodhill in Eastwood on the hill above Portishead. Roman building remains were found in the grounds of Gordano School, providing evidence that they too inhabited the town.During the 1600’s, with the town’s close proximity to the Channel, wealthy businessmen from Bristol started to take an interest in Portishead as a potential place to live and spend recreational time. As a result, the City of Bristol started to buy up the land and by the end of the 17th Century the City of Bristol had acquired most of Portishead. Early in the 19th Century Bristol decided to develop the area as a seaside resort as well as a retreat for Bristol businessmen. At the same time it was also agreed to expand industry in the area. This was the very beginnings of the expansion of Portishead into a thriving town and its development as a tourist attraction. In the 19th Century, growth in Portishead was centred around the docks and transport infrastructure was put in place to support it.The Victorian period saw the encouragement of day trippers from Bristol using paddle steamers as transport and then rail, when in 1907 the light railway reached Portishead. Tourist attractions were developed with the Approach Golf Course opening in 1908 and the Lake Grounds in 1910.In 1911 Mustad’s nail factory was built and in 1926 work on the first of two power stations started at the dockside. Portishead Radio was born in 1928 which saw the creation of a telephone control

centre for non-direct dialled calls to maritime vessels.Commercial enterprise continued and saw the building of the Albright & Wilson phosphorus plant and a paper mill. When years later the industries declined, housing developments took over to make good use of redundant sites. Portishead Radio Station closed and the masts were removed after sending the last message in 1978. The landscape, dominated by four large chimney stacks belonging to the power stations, changed dramatically when the final two were demolished in 1992 marking the end of an era in Portishead. As the old industries closed down and housing developments replaced them, new business centres unfolded in Portishead. Office suites and workshops have contributed to the growth of the town, along with a wealth of new shops, bars and restaurants which complement the existing and traditional businesses. The Avon & Somerset Constabulary Headquarters has been built in the town making it Portishead’s largest employer and the town is fast becoming an attractive commercial centre and shopping destination in its own right.

Places of InterestPortishead is steeped in charm and history. It is magnificently situated with sweeping views of the Severn Estuary with the Welsh coastline and two Severn bridges on one side and the scenic Gordano Valley on the other.Often referred to as the jewel in the town’s crown, the picturesque Lake Grounds is a popular beauty spot. The location is ideal for relaxing, admiring the spectacular views or watching the bowls, foot-ball or cricket that take place there. There is plenty of open space for children to play and a park with play equipment for younger chil-dren sits within the safety of an enclosure close to the lake. The lake provides an ideal opportunity to feed the ducks or take out a rowing boat. Then just a stone’s throw away you will find pitch & putt and tennis courts. The Lake Grounds provide an ideal place to picnic. Alternatively refreshments are available from the Lakeside Café

The seafront promenade leads to Eastwood and to Portishead Point, known locally as Battery Point and on which stands a familiar landmark naviga-tion light. Ships pass closer to the land at Battery Point than anywhere else on the UK coastline. An open air swimming pool with a season run-ning from April to September is nestled in to the headland. The heated pool with sun terraces has undergone extensive refurbishment since it opened in 1962. In 2009 management of the pool was handed over to a community trust which, with the help of grant aid and volunteers from the local community, has overseen a

£200,000 facelift. It is now run by Portishead Pool Community Trust. The town’s indoor swimming pool can be found at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre in Station Road.

A Victorian High Street is the heart of the town, with avariety of shops, cafes, offices and bars. Two High Street public houses of particular historic interest are thePoacher which dates back to 1600s and the White Lion, which was formerly a water mill and has the granite grind-stone from its earlier use set in to its front wall.Other shopping areas in the town include West Hill, Wynd-ham Way and Harbour Road. There are many fine old build-ings in Portishead, the most notable being the Parish Church of St Peter which dates back to the 14th Century. The Grange, a Grade II Listed Building is thought to be one of the oldest and most charming buildings in the High Street, with part of the building believed to date back to the 12th Century.

Court Farm, one of the fewremaining High Street farms also dates back to the 12th Century. A tower which was added later is believed to have been built to enable the merchant occupier to observe his ships sailing in to the mouth of the River Avon on

their way to Bristol Docks. There are numerous attractive walks around Portishead which include coastal paths, wood-land walks and nature reserves. Mariners’ path is a coastal walk leading from Portishead to Clevedon, Eastwood and Weston Big Wood offer woodland walks and a new nature reserve sits on the edge of the Ashlands devel-opment. Created as a haven for local wildlife where local people can get involved, this site is managed by Avon Wildlife Trust and can be found when travel-ling away from the town along Wyndham Way, by turning left into Sheepway. The pedestrian entrance is on the left after the railway bridge. Eastwood is also designated a nature reserve. The wood includes the Broad Walk along its ridge which descends to Pier Road where the old pier can be found. The marina can be found in the historic old dock, which lies at

the northern end of Portishead. It is established as one of the best equipped marina facilities in the South West and is over-looked by a range of waterfront bars, cafes and restaurants.

World class artists have created stunning sculptures that are integrated in to the Port Marine landscape. A public art trail invites visitors to seek out the artworks which reflect to the town’s history and heritage. Visit www.publicartportishead.co.uk for further information. An exploration of Portishead will uncover more fine old buildings, quaint cottages, paths and lanes leading to hidden conservation areas and spectacular panoramic views.

Gordano is both a High Performing Specialist School and a happy, safe community. When Ofsted last visited, they told us that our curriculum and our care for young people are outstanding.

From the beginning of Year 7, our aim is to allow each student to nd success as an individual and to help plan study pathways that will open up at 17 or 18, the greatest possible life chances for our young people. With this in mind, important choices are made in Year 8 for an early start in to GCSE or Diploma subjects. Allowing this extra year is what we call the Personalised Stage (Years 9-11) and our focus is to allow students to progress at their own pace – accelerating if they are able to go faster or taking their time if they need to. Our aim is that not one single child is left behind. There are innovative opportunities for our Gifted and Talented and high quality professional support for those with learning challenges.

“The care, guidance and support of students are outstanding. Students feel safe and well supported……. Students say this is a happy school. They value the fact that their sta willingly give of their own time to support them.” Ofsted 2007

Our very popular and happy Sixth Form has a student body of 350, with up to 10% of students joining us from other schools at 16. New students integrate quickly and often go on to positions of student leadership. Results in the Sixth Form are exceptional and the School is regularly placed in the top 250 sixth forms, nationally.Facilities are good with exclusive us of Common Room, café area and private study spaces. Senior students play a leading part in the life of the School including membership of all Governor Committees. The Sixth Form curriculum is “outstanding, being innovative and responsive to students’ needs and aspirations.” Ofsted 2007“Students have high aspirations and are prepared to work very hard to achieve their ambitions. They are very well prepared for employment or further study, beneting from a well planned programme of tutorials and opportunities to develop their own leadership skills.” Ofsted 2007

Community Groups, Organisations and VolunteersCommunity spirit is very much alive in Portishead. Many events and activities that take place in the town, happen purely because volunteers within the community have made them happen.A great example of this is Portishead Carnival. On a Saturday in June each year the whole town turns out for a spectacular day of family fun. Up to 30 floats and walking parties created by individuals, families, schools, community groups and businesses congregate at the Lake Grounds before parading through the town, along the High Street towards to the carnival field. During the afternoon the Clevedon Road show field is a hub of activity with charity stalls, fairground rides, live music, food and drink. The event raises money for local charities.

Another annual fundraiser in the town is the raft race. Again, organised by volunteers, this is a community event that provides hours of family fun. Rafts are raced across the lake on a Sunday in July, raising thousands of pounds for good causes.

Portishead Flower Show and Country Fair, organised by the Portishead and District Horticultural Society has been running for around 150 years and takes place over two days at the Clevedon Road Show Field at the end of July.A committee of volunteers also works tirelessly all year to provide Portishead with one of the best Christmas lights displays in the south west. The festive illuminations run through the High Street from the end of November until early January.

One of the main fundraising events for the lights is the traditional Victorian Fayre which sees the High Street closed to traffic on a December

evening, while shop keepers and stall holders dress in Victorian costume to sell their wares, promote their cause or raise the profile of their organisation.

Portishead has entered the South West in Bloom competition for the last 13 years. In 2008 it was awarded a gold medal and also awarded the Portman Cup for being the best in the Small Towns group. It was also eligible to enter the Britain in Bloom competition. This is the largest and most prestigious horticultural campaign in Europe. Started in 1963, it has grown to the size it is today due to the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers in local communities across the country. There are hundreds of communities involved in cities, towns and villages. In 2009, at the South West Regional Finals of Britain in Bloom, Portishead received a gold medal once again!

In addition, Portishead was awarded the Sargent Cup for “the most outstanding effort and dedication in the competition”. Then in the National Finals, Portishead won gold in the
