COLLABORATION AND CO-LOCATED EVENTS Professional associations such as ICOLD and the International Energy Agency, as well as the World Bank, will lead some of the technical sessions.

• Itaipu Binacional is planning to hold its fourth Global Hydropower Operators’ Round Table, giving operators of major powerplants an opportunity to exchange experience on operational issues and maintenance. • Another pre-conference Workshop ‘Design a small hydropower project in one day’ will be held prior to HYDRO 2019. It will be the seventh in a series of extremely successful workshops on this subject, led by Prof David Williams and Gordon Black, of Learning Hydro, UK, and sponsored by Gilkes, UK.

PORTUGAL WELCOMES BACK GLOBAL HYDRO DELEGATES HYDRO 2019 will be the 26th in our annual series of HYDRO conferences, and the third to take place in Portugal, following HYDRO 2004 in Porto and HYDRO 2010 in Lisbon.

Portugal is an ideal European host country for the global hydropower community, with a wealth of experience and expertise to share, in all forms of hydropower: from large-scale pumped-storage plants to large and small run-of-river installations. The country has about 7200 MW of installed hydro capacity, including pumped-stor-age; and typically hydro contributes more than 15 000 GWh/year of electricity.

The country’s strong emphasis on all forms of renewable energy has underlined the need for pumped storage, and a number of large hydro or pumped-storage plants have been upgraded in recent years to add new reversible units.

Some of the most important schemes completed in the past few years are: Salamonde II (207 MW), Baixo Sabor (151 MW), Foz Tua (252 MW) and Frades II (780 MW). Construction is under way on the 1158 MW Alto Tâmega complex, which comprises the Gouvães, Alto Tâmega and Daivoes hydro plants.

PORTO AS HOST CITY Located in northwest Portugal on the estuary of the majestic Douro river, close to most of the major new hydro and pumped-storage developments, Porto is an ideal meeting point. Known for past explorers, adventurers and trade, and port wine, it is now a vibrant hub for new discoveries and entrepreneurship in a changing world.

Those who took part at HYDRO 2004 will already know that Porto is a remarkable city. It is 900 years old; and its historical centre has been proclaimed a World Her-itage Site by UNESCO. However, Portugal’s second city is now a major base for re-searchers, entrepreneurs and growing modern businesses. Porto University has a dynamic Science and Technology Park, UPTEC. The Porto Design Factory, part of the city’s major Polytechnic, is aiming to produce a new generation of innovators.

The city is built on the steep northern bank of the Douro, and radiates out to the Atlantic to the west and the ports of Matosinhos and Leça in the north. Many points of interest are within the area between the riverside Ribeira district and the central Avenida dos Aliados: a maze of medieval alleys, shops, cobbled streets and baroque monuments, which define the city.

Porto won the title of best European destination again in 2017. Known as the ‘city of bridges’, its most famous is the 72 m-high Dom Luis bridge, completed in 1886. Ponte do Infante is the world’s largest single-span (280 m) concrete bridge. Further east is Gustave Eiffel’s Ponte Dona Maria Pia, an iron railway bridge which was used up until 1991.

HYDRO 2019 will take place in the Alfândega (Old Customs House) conference cen-tre, a building full of history and character, beside the Douro river. It is close to the historical centre, and to numerous hotels in all categories, where rooms will be blocked for delegates.

MISSION AND SCOPE As always, the focus will be on global issues, especially promoting best practices and advancing hydro development in less developed countries.

The theme ‘Concept to closure: Practical steps’ is inspired by the emphasis at preced-ing conferences on good project preparation and general planning, to encompass thor-ough site studies, stakeholder involvement and corporate social multi-disciplinary planning, and careful selection of equipment.

Key topics will therefore be: planning and finance, innovative approaches to design and construction, safety and disaster risk management, modelling, selection of robust and efficient equipment, and environmental and social issues.

Additional topics, of increasing importance throughout the world, will be capacity building and training, climate resilience, cross-border collaboration, and maximizing the potential of existing hydro assets.

HYDRO 2019 MISSION AND SCOPE

SULTAN ALAM MEMORIAL PRIZE PAPER In memory of world expert on sedimentation management, Sultan Alam, who frequently chaired sessions on the subject at the annual conferences, we are launching a competition for students, recent post-graduates and young professionals: to submit papers on innovative research or development in the field of sedimentation management.

An international panel is being appointed to review the papers submitted. The author of the winning paper will be invited to make a presentation in Porto, and runners up will be eligible for short presentations or poster displays.

The winner and runners up will have registration fees waived.

More details of this competition, and details of the deadline for submissions, will be announced shortly.

HYDRO 2019 EXHIBITION AND SPONSORSHIP

A major element of the HYDRO 2019 event will be the Technical Exhibition, running for three days alongside the conference (14 to 16 October).

The exhibition pavilions will be the main hub for business networking between delegates and industry representatives who will be exhibiting their supplies and services. Exhibitors typically comprise consultants, contractors, manufacturers, developers and professional associations. All lunch and refreshments will be served in the exhibition, with catering points arranged to ensure that delegates will move around the whole area regularly during the three days. Feedback from previous events indicates that delegates maximize the opportunities to circulate in the exhibition, and that valuable contacts are made, which are maintained after the event. The exhibition will remain open for a networking reception after the conference sessions on Tuesday 15 October, to provide extra opportunities for business meetings in an informal atmosphere. Exhibition space is generally sold in units of 6 m2, and multiple units can be combined to create larger displays including custom-built stands. Sponsorship packages are available and provide an excellent way of standing out among competitors (such as coffee breaks, lunches, social events, etc.). Porto’s Francisco Sa Caneiro international airport is located just 10 km from the city centre, and is served by many international airlines such as Air Canada,

United Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Swiss, Lufthansa, Iberia, British Airways, KLM, Czech Airlines, Air France, the national airline TAP, as well as a number of European budget airlines. It is thus possible to find a direct flight from numerous cities worldwide.

Portugal is a member of the European Union and a signatory to the Schengen Agreement. Our event management team will be happy to arrange supporting letters for visa applications for registered delegates. On-line registration will begin in July 2019.

Accommodation will be reserved for HYDRO 2019 delegates in a range of hotels close to the Alfândega Congress Centre, some within easy walking distance.

Our Final Bulletin will be available in July 2019, containing full details of accommodation options, study tours, registration fees and the technical and social programmes. Please beware of scam accommodation bureaux who may contact companies in the hydro industry pretending to be representing HYDRO 2019.

The weather in Porto in October is generally mild and pleasant, but some rain showers are to be be expected.

As usual a full social and cultural programme will be organized for all participants. There will be a local excursion in Porto on Sunday 13 October, to give all dele-

gates an opportunity to view some of the important sites of the city and to have lunch together in a local restaurant.

A full programme of cultural and touristic excursions is being planned for accompanying persons, to give them a chance to explore Porto more thoroughly, and to get to know the surrounding landscape, including the Douro valley. Accompanying persons are welcome to attend the evening social events.

A reception and dinner will be held on the evening of 13 October for Chairpersons and speakers, after the briefing meetings at Alfândega.

The welcome reception for all participants will take place in an elegant setting, on the evening of Monday 14 October.

On Tuesday, in the early evening, there will be a networking reception in the exhibi-tion halls after the conference sessions. The rest of the evening will be free.

There will be a farewell dinner, with music, on the evening of 16 October.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

AMI HYDROPOWER FOUNDATIONThis is an independent charitable foundation, governed by an international board of trustees, set up in 2007 with the principal

aim of facilitating participation at the annual HYDRO conferences of delegates from less developed and developing countries, and others, including young engineers and students, with current economic restraints.

Further details of the application process for funding can be found at: www.hydropower-dams.com/foundation/ Fully completed applications, with supporting references, must be received by the organizers at least 10 weeks prior to the date of the conference, to allow sufficient time for processing by the trustees.

Successful applicants will normally be granted assistance to cover the conference registration fees, and in some cases accommodation. Travel expenses will generally not be covered, although, in some exceptional cases, contributions towards travel costs may be granted.

If you or your company would like to make a donation to the Foundation, you will have the opportunity to do so at the time of registration. The Foundation can be contacted at: [email protected]

Abstracts are invited on the themes listed or related topics. Please email abstracts to: [email protected]. A short CV of each author

(and any co-authors) must be included.

FORMAT REQUIREMENTS Your abstract should be up to 800 words long, in English, and should summarize precisely the scope and content of the proposed paper. In the case of any project described, please mention its current status and date of completion. It would be helpful to suggest the theme for which your paper is best suited. Please incorporate the author’s name in the file name of the abstract, which should be submitted as a Word document and PDF.

ATTENDANCE OF THE CONFERENCE Please note that abstracts should only be submitted if the author would be able to attend the conference (or send a repres entative). Please obtain any necessary clear ance, and check your availability to attend, before submitting the abstract. If your paper is accepted, you will be asked to sign a form confirming your willingness to attend; it is essential that we receive this undertaking before allocating time for an oral pres entation. If you have had a paper accepted in the past, and have not attended to present it, you may be asked to register before acceptance of your paper for HYDRO 2019 can be confirmed. Speakers will be eligible for reduced registration fees, which will include meals and social events during the conference. In the case of speakers from less

developed countries, in some exceptional circumstances, we may be able to secure financial support to cover fees, but it is essential that we know this at the time when the abstract is submitted. The final deadline for receipt of abstracts is 8 February 2019. However it is useful for us, in planning the sessions, to receive submissions as early as possible. Authors will be notified by June 2019 whether or not their paper has been accepted for presentation (or alternatively for publication only on the USB stick with the papers). Abstracts will generally be reviewed by two or more experts on our International Steering Committee, and you may be asked to modify some aspects of your proposed paper. As this review process takes some time, we urge you to submit abstracts promptly (if possible, well before the deadline). Full papers will be required by 23 August 2019, and format guidelines will be sent to all authors whose papers are accepted. A PDF and Word document of each final paper will be required.
