Pacific ASDA 2016 Gold Crown Application

FROM THE PRESIDENTThe first steps to building a great dentist includes developing a well-rounded person. Our ASDA chapter exists to advocate for the wellness, professional development, and personal development of dental students. The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry provides us with the capacity to hold such an organization, but this is not what makes us significant. Our ASDA chapter collaborates interprofessionally and reaches beyond dental students to hold events, lectures, and programs, but even this isn’t what makes us significant. Our aim of executing opportunities that students dream of is what truly leads to our significance. When a student comes up to me saying, “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if…” followed by an idea that could help dental students, our chapter aims to foster it and deliver what dental students, the people we do all of this for, think would best help their experience.

A Pacific ASDA family member once told me, “Scale a tooth and it’s clean for a day. Teach its owner to floss and it’s clean for a lifetime.” Whilst on a three year university, we promote the culture of learning quickly and taking action quickly. We encourage integrating and collaborating rather than starting from scratch. There’s no need to reinvent the handpiece. This year, we have improved a number of existing events by engaging more students, staff, and faculty; offering more activities within those events; or raising more money. For instance, in our second annual #Q4MADNESS, we added a costume contest component with a social media contest to promote the event online and to boost festivity. We also spent less money to fund the event by obtaining a sponsorship early in the process. Our vendor fair had a 25% increase in profits, and we were even able to offer sunglasses and shirts to all participants. Also, instead of one pre-dental day, we organized three of them throughout the year to provide more exposure to pre-dental students who may have scheduling conflicts. (We’ve learned there is more than an unwritten moral obligation to help pre-dental students. They are the future of ASDA. ) Altogether, the collaboration and improvement of our existing activities have helped enhance the experience we provide for our school.

We’ve focused on professional development more than ever. In the profession of dentistry, of course this would include tips on how to get through school, which is accomplished through our Welcome Week directed to newly matriculated students and Clinical Transitions meeting for first years about to start clinic. Pacific ASDA also wanted to offer skills for general professional development, not just dentistry. After hearing Jia Jiang’s powerful message on overcoming failure at NLC, we wanted to bring him to Pacific to share his universal story. Our lecture hall of 155 people did not have enough room for everyone that day. We aimed to extend our opportunities for professional development to non-traditional students. In 2016, we have had the strongest involvement from Advanced Standing/IDS students than ever before with 85%+ class involvement. IDS students have taken on leadership roles in our chapter and district leadership, hosted breakout sessions at district meetings, and spearheaded organization of a brand new event, Casino Night, while also improving existing events such as Bridge Builders and Diwali.

Dr. Dugoni has stated, “At Pacific, we grow people and along the way they become doctors.” Fostering personal development in a whirlwind of stress from school isn’t simple, but Pacific ASDA aimed to integrate personal development into the whole Pacific experience. This year, we hosted our first ever wellness lunch-and-learns, and seminars discussing sleep expertise, nutrition, ergonomics served as reminders for our students to take care of themselves. Our first Dugoni Beach Bootcamp involved a friendly competition of student teams crab-walking, hula-hooping, or relaying across the sands of Ocean Beach. Also, the first Fall Carnival, hosted a month ago in November, allowed students to decompress and play traditional carnival games before the stress of finals approached in December. Our focus on personal development and wellness aims to keep our students as healthy and happy.

Everything we do is a model for the year that follow sus. Our chapter is not finished planning. We are not done with our responsibilities to each other as ASDA members. Our greatest accomplishment, though, is the journey that we’ve taken as a chapter. ASDA will always support the Pacific dental students and pre-dental community and promote the culture that continues to change. We could not be more proud to call ourselves a part of this process.

PACIFICASDA

Pacific ASDA has expand-ed more than ever in the 2016 school year. The committee chairs have doubled, and members are collaborating togeth-er to bring innovation and

bring innovation and opportunities to the school, pre-dental students, and more. Previous events, fundraisers, and activities have been enhanced, and new ones have just become introduced into the tradition we have at University of the Pacific. The following pages highlight some of our many achievements this year.

7

DIWALI FESTIVALDiwali Festival, also known as the Festival of Lights, is another celebration of culture at University of the Pacific. The Pacific ASDA students in the Advanced Standing/IDS program take the reigns in planning and executing the evening of food, entertainment, and music. This year’s celebration featured a full course Indian dinner, 6 different performances, intricate decorations, and a dance party afterwards and 150 tickets were sold.

Bridge Builders, one of Pacific ASDA’s favorite school traditions, unites all different cultures to celebrate as a family. Over 250 DDS and IDS students, faculty, and staff all collabo-rate on themed tables and showcase their culture’s best food, drinks, and entertain-ment. Costumes aren’t mandatory but are donned by almost all attendees anyway.

BRIDGEBUILDERS

FALL CARNIVALThe Fall Carnival, a brand new event introduced in Novebmber 2016, aimed to create an interactive, engaging social activitiy for all members of the school on a Friday evening. Features included food, games, raffles, photo booth, and beer and wine.

The first ever Dugoni Beach Bootcamp was designed to create a friendly competition of races and obstacles on the beach. 9 teams of 4 individuals challeneged each other on hula hooping, running, crab walking, and relays right on the coast of Ocean Beach in San Francisco. The entrance fee included a shirt, snacks, and prizes for victorious teams.

VOLUNTEEROUTREACH

BEACHBOOTCAMP

PRE-DENTALDAY

Our ASDA members volunteered with E-Soccer and E-Hoops, weekly programs that met on Saturdays to help kids with special needs to learn sportsmanship and exercise.

More pre-dental students were able to attend with 3 offered events rather than just 1 in 2015.

#Q4MADNESS

The second annual beer pong tournament took place once again in our largest lecture hall. Changes from this year included a sponsorship package with Aspen Dental which helped decrease our expenses. There was also a costume contest and social media competition which increased participation of the event for people who did not want to play in the tournament.

PENNYWARS

Our annual fundraiser, Penny Wars, rallies up school spirit and raises money to donate to a nonprofit organization. This year, $1000.62 was given to two organizations, the Enterprise for High School Students and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT

With more students, faculty, and staff utilizing social media, we wanted to improve our presence, particularly on Facebook and Instagram. The number of Facebook likes on our page increased by 32% and is still continuing to grow. One reason for this improvement was the introduction of the “ASDA Awesomeness Alert.” When Pacific ASDA hears news about something creative, inspiring, or in honor of recognition, we wanted to post about it on Facebook to highlight our chapter’s achievements. We also doubled the amount of Instagram posts and followers we had since the beginning of 2016, and incorporated social media contests such as the No Shave Movember contest as well and #Q4MADNESS photo contest.
