It will run from Sungai Buloh across the Central Business District (CBD) and ending in Kajang. Spanning 51km in length with 41.5km elevated and 9.5km underground section, the line comprises 31 stations of which 7 stations are underground. Each 4-car train set serving the line allows a total capacity of 1,200 passengers.

The daily ridership is estimated to be about 400,000 passengers and the trains will run at a frequency of 3.5 minutes during peak hours. The SBK Line is expected to commence for operation in two phases, with the first phase in December 2016 and the second in July 2017.

MMC-Gamuda KVMRT (PDP SSP) Sdn BhdThe MRT Sungai Buloh – Serdang – Putrajaya (SSP) Line The MRT SSP Line is the second MRT line to be developed. MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn BhdInnovative solutions underneath the city landscape

MMC-Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd was set up specifically to undertake the designand construction work for the underground packages of Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project. The RM8.2billion tunnelling package for KVMRT SBK Lineinvolves the design and construction of 9.5km of MRT underground tunnel withseven underground stations. The underground tunnelling alignment runs fromthe Semantan North Portal near the Federal Hill past the urban transport hubof KL Sentral and the busy streets of Bukit Bintang and Chinatown to the MaluriSouth Portal near Taman Miharja.

With almost half of the 9.5km tunnelling length sitting in the tropical Karstic Limestone, the MRT route through the city adjoining prime real estate. It was essential that the risks were managed and insurers convinced of the viability of sale to tunnelling. This was achieved with the proposed VD TBMs.

VARIABLE DENSITY TUNNEL BORING MACHINE (VD TBM) AND THE TUNNELLING SOLUTIONSlurry TBMs are normally used in high permeability and/or highly variable and unpredictable formations such as in the Karstic Limestone, which is riddled with fissures and cavities. Hitting a cavity or a fissure which has not showed up in any of the geological surveys can be a debilitating affair – for the contractor as well as the public. Experience shows that EPB machines are not the right choice for this environment.

The variable density machine works on a principle where the density of fresh bentonite slurry pumped into the excavation chamber can be varied–increased according to the ground condition. Normal slurry machine does not have this capability and hence this function makes the VD TBM special and the first of its kind in the world (Winner of the Technical Innovation of the Year Award in 2014).

The VD TBM can be operated in the classical Slurry TBM mode incorporating an air bubble system for face pressure control and using the low density slurry to form the bentonite “cake” on the face or in a variable density mode when the bentonite “cake” does not form and the support is provided by the friction of the high density slurry penetrating the soil voids as well as in the full EPB mode.
