Experience the incredible life of the Portsmouth-built Mary Rose - perhaps the most famous of the city’s many ships. In celebration of the opening of the new Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard , Portsmouth Festivities, in collaboration with the Mary Rose Trust, have commissioned Ahoy! The Festivities will host the world premiere performance at Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday 24 June (p.6). Writer and composer Alexander L’Estrange explains the inspiration behind the music.

“Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose has been a very exciting commission for me. I was honoured to be approached by Portsmouth Festivities, who have a formidable reputation for commissioning new works. The brief was to commemorate King Henry VIII’s warship, the Mary Rose, and the brand new state-of-the-art museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard which has been built to house her.

Numerous choirs had been asking if I was working on a follow-up to Zimbe! (a cantata fusing African, jazz and choral music). Since that had proved so successful worldwide, I decided to adopt the same formula of combining adult choirs, children’s choirs and a

band – this time bringing in a nautical theme with fiddle and accordion.

The two main themes of Ahoy! are Tudor music and sea shanties – which are very well matched. The score spans everything from ‘Greensleeves’ to the Sailor’s Hornpipe, together with a new setting of ‘Full Fathom Five’ from Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’.

The piece begins with narration, spoken over a musical overture, which tells the story of the ship’s 34-year naval career, tragic and mysterious sinking, and resurrection from the depths almost 450 years later – and I’m delighted at the premiere it’s being delivered by Hugh Dennis.

Personally I have been very moved by many aspects of the ship’s story and, since for me music is something to be shared by everyone, I have particularly enjoyed the chance to bring together singers of all ages in a spirit of community. The Portsmouth Festivities are the perfect occasion for its premiere.”

This year, Portsmouth Festivities are proud to be working in partnership with New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth (NTR). It’s an exciting time for the theatre, as CEO Caroline Sharman explains.

“NTR started out life in Old Portsmouth as The Theatre Royal, before moving to Guildhall Walk in 1854. Many wonderful artists have graced our stage, including Sarah Bernhardt, Henry Irving, Laurel and Hardy, Sheila Hancock, Big Daddy and Lenny Henry.

In 1972, an accidental fire destroyed the stage house. Thankfully, the stage curtain fell and saved the auditorium. Over the following 40 years three attempts have been made to demolish the theatre, with the last attempt saved by just one vote.

With our new creative learning space dedicated to Anthony Minghella. A 21st century state-of-the-art theatre with a 19th century auditorium. So while building work takes place, we are going out and about.

It has been a real pleasure to partner with Portsmouth Festivities. Not only offering marketing and technical support, but also adding to the programme of activities and events. We are pleased to include our imPact Dance programme with the Portsmouth Dance Initiative (p18), three seafront installations commissioned with Worthing Theatres (p25) and two new pieces by NTR Associate Artists; Gills and Gulls by tinder theatre (p16) and Dysconformity by musician Alonso Mendoza – a musical response to the New Theatre Royal’s extraordinary story (p7).

We hope that our association with the Festivities will grow and grow”.

Roll up, roll up for a celebration of life on wheels. Bring your bikes, blades, scooters and skates to Castle Fields between 10am to 12noon and decorate them carnival-style with the help of local artists. We’ll be wheeling our way along the seafront in style from 1pm. Whether you’re there for the ride or you simply want to enjoy the sights and local craft stalls, you’re sure to have a spectacular time.

lakESIDE NaTURE TRaIl IN aSSOCIaTION WITH 1000 lakESIDE Enjoy a wildlife walk in the beautiful surroundings of Lakeside North Harbour, led by local expert Rohan Amick. June is the perfect time to enjoy the wonderful scenery around the 19 acre lake stocked with carp, roach, rudd, pike, skimmers and bream. Catch a glimpse of the resident green woodpeckers and herons, hear the summer time songs of the birds in the trees and, if you’re lucky, see wading birds taking their young chicks out for a summer time swim. And once the walk is over, take time to relax on the Lakeside decked area. Why not bring your own picnic and blanket?
