Our mission is to build community through the arts by providing all people with the opportunity to achieve their full creative potential, regardless of their age, ability, or economic status. We accomplish this through high quality music and visual arts education programs and by creating ensemble, performance, and exhibition opportunities for students, professionals and audiences.

Since 2002 we’ve motivated and inspired more than 1,000 art and music students of all ages. Our faculty’s committment to the highest educational standards, combined with the passion and dedication of our students, is at the core of this success.

At PMAC we offer visual arts classes for elementary and middle school students. We also offer individual instruction in art for students of all ages. We focus on strong foundations through the study of a wide variety of media and cultural traditions.

Our music programs are designed to meet the needs and aspirations of students of all ages and ability levels. Regardless of genre, our teachers encourage the development of fundamentals, technique and musicianship. While our curriculum is focused on classical, jazz, and rock, many students explore other genres and we welcome guest artists who introduce students to a wide array of culturally diverse styles.

Each year we provide thousands of dollars in financial assistance, making our educational programs accessible to all in the community. Additionally, we fundraise to make programs such as our teen rock bands, art camps and youth orchestra more affordable for families.

We are a full member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. We follow the Guild’s Code of Best Practices for Commuinty Arts Schools. We pledge the highest quality services we can offer, fully accessible programming, and mission accountability.

PMAC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community music and arts school. There is a place for everyone at PMAC—we welcome your involvement as a student, parent, volunteer, or donor. Through music and art, PMAC helps our students meet and accomplish important life goals. We are committed to excellence in arts education and we work daily to build community through the arts.

We are a part of a large arts and culture community in the Seacoast region and we partner with many community arts organizations. Through a long-standing partnership with The Music Hall, our students participate regularly in workshops and performances with some of the world’s best-known musicians when they come to perform in Portsmouth.

We are currently planning many visual arts collaborations in the community, including work with the Portsmouth Museum of Fine Arts. The PMAC faculty also invites a variety of regional guest musi-cians and artists to visit the school for master classes and workshops.

In 2009-10 a wide variety of public venues hosted PMAC performances and exhibits including The Music Hall, The Press Room, The Discover Portsmouth Center, the Prescott Park Arts Festival, Kit-tery Estates, The Stratham Fair, the West End Studio Theatre, the Portsmouth Public Library, local churches, and others.

When you purchase a “PMAC Card”, you are eligible for the special PMAC Card tuition price - a significant discount over the regular tuition price. This card is designed for students who study at PMAC year round, or who take multiple lessons or classes. It is also beneficial for families with several students. Your PMAC card is valid for three consecutive PMAC school sessions (Fall, Spring, Summer) beginning with the session you purchase the card.

The PMAC Card for Individuals: $40—PMAC Card tuition pricing for one person

The PMAC Card for Families: $75—PMAC Card tuition pricing for all members of your family (one household)

EASY MATH: If your child takes Fall and Spring Private Lessons and you purchase The PMAC Card, you receive a $72 discount on your tuition. (Family Cardholders receive that same discount for every child taking lessons, in addition to sibling discounts! You can’t beat it.) And the savings grows with each camp, ensemble, or class you add.

OTHER DISCOUNTSPMAC offers a 10% family discount for each additional student after the first when more than one family member (single household) studies at PMAC during the same semester. We also offer a 10% multiple program discount for each additional program after the first that a single student registers for during the same semester. These discounts are separate from the PMAC Card discount, and a PMAC Card is not needed to take advantage of these discounts. All discounts are applied to the class or program with the lower tuition value. PMAC limits discounts to a maximum of 10% for any one program (not including the PMAC Card discount). Multiple discounts cannot be layered in any way that exceeds 10% of the tuition cost.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEFinancial aid is granted to students on the basis of family need and PMAC’s availability of funds. Applications are available at the administrative office and must be returned by the appropriate deadline. In determining awards, the Financial Aid Committee considers family financial need, along with such additional factors as temporary unemployment, emergencies, illnesses, and total music training expenses. All student financial aid information is confidential. Continuation of assistance depends on evaluation of the student’s commitment and progress. New and continuing students who are enrolled in private lessons, classes, or ensembles, are eligible for financial aid. Recipients of partial financial aid who fail to pay the balance of tuition become ineligible for future aid. Financial aid recipients are expected to provide volunteer services for PMAC as scheduled through the office.

Registration for new students will be accepted throughout the semester, on a space-available basis.

NEW STUDENT REGISTRATIONNew students registering for individual instruction may sign up for a 6-week trial period. Following any trial, full-semester reg-istration is required for continued study. Single lesson trials are not available. PAYMENTRegistration obligates the student to pay tuition for the entire 18-week semester. A non-refundable $50 deposit is required at time of registration. Tuition is payable in full before the semester begins or may be paid in two or four installments. Payment is accepted by personal check, money order, VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. No cash tuition payments will be accepted. A $5 service fee is added to each payment in any multi-payment plan. Auto Payment Plan without any service charges is available. Tuition not paid in a timely manner will be subject to late fees and possible suspension of lessons. WITHDRAWALNo refunds are given for tuition following the second class or ensemble meeting. If a student withdraws from individual instruc-tion, an 80% refund or 100% credit for a future PMAC program will be provided. Intent to withdraw must be in writing to the Director of Administration and received by the school two weeks prior to the final lesson. Two weeks written notice must be given to be eligible for lesson refund or credit. Lessons scheduled within the two-weeks following the written withdrawal notice will not be refunded or credited. Non-attendance and verbal communication of intent to withdraw to faculty or staff do not constitute an official withdrawal and will not be considered for refund or credit. Failure to attend classes or lessons does not invalidate the student’s obligation to pay for the entire semester. LATE REGISTRATIONStudents entering mid-semester will be charged on a pro-rated basis for the remainder of the semester. Depending on lateness of registration, late registrants may not be eligible for multiple-payment options and may be required to pay tuition in full at the time of registration. ATTENDANCE POLICIESStudents are responsible for attending all lessons during their scheduled lesson time. Students are charged for all lessons for which they register, including those missed through absence. There are no make-up lessons for student absences. All teacher absences or cancellations by PMAC, due to professional obligations, teacher illness, weather or emergencies will be made up. Rescheduled lessons are arranged between the student and his or her teacher, not through the administrative office. The make-up weeks scheduled at the end of each semester are exclusively for making up lessons missed due to PMAC closure or instructor absences. SCHOOL CANCELLATION AND SCHOOL VACATIONSPMAC does not follow the cancellation or vacation dates of any one school district. Please refer to the PMAC calendar for PMAC holiday and vacation dates. Please call the PMAC office at 603-431-4278 for cancellation information in the event of inclement weather. Cancellation notice will be given on the PMAC phone line by 8 a.m. for full day cancellations or delayed openings and by 2 p.m. for early closings. Students may sign up for e-mail notices of weather cancellations though the e-mail newsletter op-tion on the school website at www.PMAConline.org. When conflicts arise due to winter (February-March) and/or spring (April) vacations, your instructor will work with you to reschedule lessons so as not to penalize families who vacation during school breaks while PMAC is in session. This policy does not apply to any other school holidays. While study-ing at URI, she became the violist in the Honors String Quartet which traveled to Provence, France after her senior year to participate in a program with the Academie de Musique de Chambre rencontres Musicale de Forcalquier. Ferenz Liszt Academy, Budapest, Hungary) Teaching music has been Heather Bissell’s passion from the beginning and she is very excited to be a new member of the PMAC faculty! Heather’s areas of specialty are classical piano (Suzuki and Traditional), vocal coaching (classical and Broadway), solfege/theory, and general music teaching. She has also had experience conducting choral repertoire. Heather began her musical training at the University of Southern Maine (1993) in Piano and Vocal Performance and holds two Masters in Music; one from the Hartt School of Music in Piano Performance/Piano Pedagogy (2005-- Hartford, Ct.), and one recently obtained from the Ferenz Liszt Acad-emy of Music in Budapest, Hungary in Music Pedagogy (2010). In July of this year she returned to the states after living abroad for two years and she is eager to share what she has learned with others. Heather’s main philosophy is that she does not approach teaching with the goal of fashioning professional musicians but instead well-rounded people who are also artists. Being that music is so instrumental in a child’s overall development, Heather believes her main responsibility is to give the best quality education possible to every child and then help them see where it leads them individually.
