The big news is that Portsmouth Music Hub is now live on line, connecting musical organisations across the city for the benefit of the whole learning community in Portsmouth - more about this on page 2. With the office move, we have no printing facilities and all communication is now electronic, so please forward this newsletter to everyone who might be interested. Portsmouth Music HubFor everyone who cares about music in Portsmouth
We are very proud to introduce Portsmouth Music Hub, a new and exciting dynamic network committed to building a secure foundation for music and music education in Portsmouth. Portsmouth Music Hub maximises the potential of digital technology and social networking to bring together a whole host of musical organisations in and around the city.
Portsmouth Music Hub will be officially launched on Monday November 7th at the Portsmouth Guildhall. During the day, there will be FREE PERFORMANCES for schools led by special guest violinist, Greg Scott. At 6pm, there will be a special reception for Hub partners in the Lord Mayor's Banqueting Suite followed by a FREE CONCERT for the whole community at 7pm in the Guildhall with an opportunity to meet Hub Partners, Sponsors and Associates. FREE Tickets are available from the Guildhall Box Office from Saturday 1st October.

Music Education Grant UpdateAn update from Dick Hallam, the National Music Education Grant Director: The Government intends to publish the National Music Plan in the Autumn.
! The current planning assumption is that Music Education Hubs will formally start in September 2012 and that funding will be made available to the current providers for the Summer term as a proportion of the funding settlement secured for 2012-13. As you will note from the previous article, Portsmouth Music Hub is already established and growing so Portsmouth is very well positioned for the future.
! Funding allocations are expected to be announced at the same time as the National Plan is published.
! The National Music Plan will be largely based on the Henley Review recommendations:
‣ First access and then progression for every child on his or her musical journey is at the centre of what is to be offered;
‣ Music Education Hubs will be based on formal partnerships of organisations working strategically to ensure the best possible offer for children in their area;
‣ The Hubs’ provision will support, complement and enhance the experiences the child gains from their music curriculum in school;
‣ The Hubs will fulfill those functions that the school cannot fulfil alone;
‣ By working in partnership with the schools, the Hubs will enable the child to experience a coherent music education in and out of school;
‣ The Hubs will ensure that inequalities in provision across the country are addressed and that every child has the opportunity to learn and instrument and to sing;
! The Hubs will ensure that quality music education does not become the preserve of those children whose families can afford to pay for tuition and ensemble opportunities.

Ofsted UpdateOfsted plans to start inspecting music services from September 2011
The Ofsted Music team, lead by Mark Phillips HMI, National Adviser for Music, will be carrying out 60 music subject specific inspections in schools across the country this academic year. Schools judged to be 'Outstanding' will also be visited as part of these inspections.
The Henley Review of Music Education in England recommended that ‘Ofsted’s remit should be expanded to include the reviewing of standards in Music Education provided in schools by Local Authority Music Services, Arts Council England client organisations or other recognised music delivery organisations.’
Ofsted will be asking headteachers to inform heads of Music Services that the inspections are taking place and heads of Music Services will be invited to meet with inspectors. Music Services have been asked to reschedule whole class tuition (Ready 4 Music) for the period of the inspection along with any other music teaching so the inspectors can see the full range of provision in the school.
These lessons will be judged against Ofsted’s subject-specific teaching criteria for specialist music inspections which can be found on the Ofsted website. Schools will also be asked to provide some data - Portsmouth Music Service may be able to help you with this as we hold data about gender, participation, standards, ensemble membership, drop out rates and instrumental range.

School Music Data Required
The Music Service has been asked to gather data to return to the DfE about musical learning and participation in schools in the city. We are able to provide data about participation and standards of all pupils taught by Portsmouth Music Service staff.
The data we require from schools is the number of musical groups in schools run by the music service or an organisation other than the school, and the number of ensembles and participants in musical ensembles run by the school. A form will be sent to all schools and we need all forms returned, including nil responses to the Music Service by Friday 7th October. We do appreciate your co-operation in this matter. If you have queries about this, please do not hesitate to contact Sue Beckett at the Music Service for further information.

Ensemble DVD
The Music Service has produced a 5 minute DVD for schools and parents to encourage more pupils to attend after school music ensembles. DVDs are being sent to all schools and the film can also be found on the Music Hub YouTube Channel (Click here).
We do hope you will play the DVD in assemblies and on the screens in your school entrance halls. The aim of the DVD is show the range of ensembles available and to show how much ensemble members enjoy taking part. All ensembles are FREE of charge. You may well recognise some of your pupils in the DVD!

Music Village
The focus of this term’s Music Village is Simple songs and activities for the classroom. Please email the office to confirm your attendance by 10th October 2011. The Music Village is open to all teachers, assistants and Music Co-ordinators in primary and special schools.

Performance Evening
The Autumn Term Performance Evening is taking place on Tuesday 22nd November 2011 at Paulsgrove Baptist Church, 1 Woofferton Rd, Portsmouth PO6 4DW.
This event is open to instrumentalists and vocalists from across the city in all key stages who are taught by Portsmouth Music Service teachers. Please liaise with Portsmouth Music Service staff in your school if you have pupils who would like to perform. The Music Service staff will give pupils an application form that needs to be submitted to us by Monday 14th November 2011.

Children In Need
Children In Need is fast approaching, do remember you can perform Portsmouth Music Service’s Children In Need Song, which is on the Portsmouth Music Service website for you to download. Please note there is an event to raise money for Children in Need taking place at the Kings Theatre on Tuesday 15th November. The Kings Theatre are part of Portsmouth Music Hub.

Special Christmas Celebration
This year’s Special Christmas Celebration is taking place at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral on the morning of Thursday 1st December, with the rehearsal on the morning of Tuesday 29th November. This is always a very popular and memorable event with a focus on enabling children with special needs to take to the stage and celebrate Christmas through music, song, dance and readings.
There are limited places at this event. If you would particularly like your school to take part, please contact Sue Beckett at the Music Service by Thursday 22nd September.
There is a planning meeting to prepare for this event, which is taking place on Thursday 27th September between 4 - 5pm at the Music Service Office. It is essential that all schools participating in this event send a representative along to the meeting. If you would like further information, please contact Sue Beckett at the Music Service.

Ensemble Concerts at Langstone Junior School
Both concerts involve performers from all Portsmouth Music Service ensembles; it is an opportunity for them to show their family and friends what they have been learning throughout the term and also get into the Christmas celebrations with a few carols for everyone.
We hope these dates will not conflict with your own school Christmas celebrations as Portsmouth Music Service will be involved in the ensemble concerts and will not be able to support your school concerts on these dates.

Portsmouth Secondary Schools’ Prom On March 29th 2012 Springfield School will host the first Portsmouth Secondary Schools’ Prom. This will be a high profile event showcasing the musical talent that exists in our Portsmouth’s secondary schools. Each school will be given a ten minute slot to fill with musical items which can include solos, small and large ensembles and whole class performances. It is hoped to establish this as an annual event in order to give schools a regular platform to celebrate the excellent work that is taking place.

Ready 4 Music Summer Festivals
This year there are three Ready 4 Music Festivals in the Summer Term. These festivals are for all pupils engaged in the Ready 4 Music programme (Years 4, 5, 6 and 7) and involve pupils coming together to play and sing as a large ensemble. No preparation is needed before the events as all music is learnt on the day. Details of how to sign up for these festivals will be included in the Spring Term newsletter. Music Learning Live 2012Educating educators!
As part of Portsmouth Music Hub, schools are entitled to special discounts for this event! The national musiclearninglive!2012 conference takes place in London on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th March at the Institute of Education. The event has a huge range of sessions ranging from hands-on workshops, demonstrations, live performances, keynote presentations and lively debates. There is also a delegate reception and plenty of other opportunity for networking, as well as an extensive trade exhibition. EnsemblesA chance to shine!
Portsmouth Music Service ensembles provide young people with a platform to develop and improve their skills, boost confidence in performance and gain experience playing with other musicians. The range of ensembles caters for musicians of all levels in a wide range of instruments. All ensembles are free of charge and open to everyone who is in full-time education and under the age of 19. Below is a list of ensembles and their rehearsal details.

Portsmouth Sings!Everyone has a voice!
“Portsmouth Sings!” involves highly effective partnerships with Portsmouth Pensioners Association, The Learning Place and Portsmouth City Council as well as local choirs.
All Portsmouth Sings! Choirs (except the community Gospel Choir) will start on the week of 26th September 2011.

Next Brit ThingDo you have what it takes?
Get involved! Young people from Great Britain and Northern Ireland are being encouraged to register for Next Brit Thing - a major new nationwide music competition backed by the UK music industry, The BRIT Awards and the Government.
Next Brit Thing is looking for young musicians in any genre to share their performances, compete in online charts and perform live. There are three awards up for grabs – General (covering Pop, Rock, Urban, Folk and Jazz), Classical and an additional award for Composition, supported by PRS for Music.
Who can enter?Next Brit Thing is open to all 11-19 year olds whether in formal education or not. It offers entrants a raft of prizes and money-can’t-buy opportunities, including the chance to perform in front of thousands and exclusive support and guidance from famous musicians and songwriters.
Creative developmentYoung people entering Next Brit Thing will also have access to high-quality tutorials and resources to help them improve their skills, develop confidence and explore careers in music or other creative industries.
Further informationThis competition is a major learning opportunity from the Government and the music industry with a wide appeal, enabling 11-19 year olds nationwide to develop their creative talents, confidence and skills.
The Next Brit Thing website at www.nextbritthing.com is already open for registration, and young people are joining in via www.facebook.com/nextbritthing and on Twitter @nextbritthing.
From September 2011, entrants can submit video and audio of their performances to be assessed by their peers in an Official Next Brit Thing weekly chart. The most popular entries each week will progress to regional finals in November 2011, culminating in a national final early in 2012.
The winnersThe lucky winners, to be chosen by a team of influential artists and senior music industry executives, will be crowned Next Brit Thing and receive a unique award in the run-up to the 2012 BRIT Awards.
