Ready 4 Music Update

This year some 1770 children are involved in the whole class instrumentalteaching programme known as Ready 4 Music covering a wide range ofinstruments from brass to violin and clarinet to ukulele.

Percussion, flute and oboe also feature strongly meaning that many children in primary schools will have first hand experience of learning one of these instruments for this school year.

Free Recital in schools to support Ready 4 Music

We are delighted that Quintessential are coming back to Portsmouth to inspire more primary school children to play instruments. Quintessential will perform in schools across the city during the week 4th March 2013.

Performers linked with Southern Sinfonia in partnership with The Friends of Music in Winchester will also provide a range of recitals in schools during the week of 11th March.

Between Quintessential and Southern Sinfonia we are hoping to have reached out and inspired every primary school pupil in the city.

Details of the recitals will be e-mailed to schools in the next fortnight.

With so many recitals scheduled, we trust that schools will be accommodating and flexible, so these recitals can be scheduled.

The recitals are intended for all pupils from Key Stage 2. Primary schools may like to involve younger children.

A schedule will be sent to all infant and secondary schools so that they can liaise with their cluster schools in order to involve as many young people as possible.

Circus-scape

After the excellent feedback we received following “Seascape” in March 2012, Portsmouth Music Service has produced a songbook called “Circus-scape” which will be used as part of the “Circus-scape event on 18th March 2013.

Schools will need to learn the 12 songs in the book and perform them at the Kings Theatre on 18th March 2013 to friends and family. There may also be a few circus skills on show!

Councillor Rob Wood has been set a challenge to learn the oboe and his debut performance will be as part of a band at the Circus-scape event.

LET’S DANCE, with the Mini BSO

A BSO Schools’ Concert for Key Stage 1 pupils Guildhall, Portsmouth, 15 March at 1.30

BSO Resonate, the Orchestra’s learning department, in partnership with the Portsmouth Music Education Hub, warmly invites pupils and staff of Portsmouth primary schools to a special FREE Schools’ Concert at the Guildhall, Portsmouth on 15 March at 1.30pm. Tickets are at no cost to schools thanks to generous support of the BSO’s Endowment Trust. The five-strong Mini BSO has performed and worked in many Portsmouth primary schools in recent years. The ensemble comprises members of the orchestra that make up the different instrumental families of the orchestra – wind (bassoon), brass (horn and trombone), strings (violin) and percussion. The theme of this one hour concert, devised specially for Key Stage 1 pupils, is music inspired by dance, and is centred around a specially written musical story about dancing animals. There will be singing and movement, and core musical concepts such as high/low, fast/slow, loud/soft and vibration are explored as the musicians demonstrate how their instrument works. The Mini BSO wins plaudits whenever the ensemble performs or works in schools. Further information about LET’S DANCE may be found on the Mini BSO’s website www.minibso.co.uk clicking on the section titled ‘Primary’.The BSO education team will be circulating schools themselves with details about this concert together with a Booking Form. Classical music at the Kings Theatre

Portsmouth Music Service and Portsmouth Philharmonia Children's Concert Sunday 14th October 3pmThe first 'Ernest Read ' style concert of classical music for children was held at the Kings Theatre, thanks to David Cooper, the General Manager .

The programme involved the Youth Orchestra and the Philharmonia playing together, followed by the Junior Orchestra and the Philharmonia. We then had 2 soloists, Conroy Adams-Merrigan on violin and Frances O'Sullivan on flute. The Portsmouth Philharmonia then played a selection of short pieces for the second half of the programme.

With their musical director, Richard Boland's, help and encouragement we were able to give the members of the Youth and Junior Orchestras the opportunity to play with us and we look forward to them joining us again .

Christmas in the Community for St John’s College Chapel Choir

The Chapel Choir of St John’s College had a busy few weeks – with Christmas celebrations starting early and taking them right up to the end of term.

There was a mix of modern with tradition as the traditional robed boys’ choir participated in a variety of events – in school, and across the community. The string of events started with ‘Community Carols’ in the School’s Chapel on the 5 December, when the Choir entertained approximately 100 members of the local community with a repertoire of carols, while members of the congregation joined in with the more traditional songs. The Choristers enjoyed helping to serve the seasonal refreshments afterwards and chatting with visitors.

On the same day the Choir was invited sing a carol concert at St Mary’s Church in Droxford. The concert was completely sold out weeks in advance, the boys sang extremely well – they received a standing ovation at the end.

The weekend of the 8 and 9 December had a Naval theme as the boys performed at the Royal Naval Club, followed by a fantastic performance on board HMS Illustrious leading their carol service. This was the first time the Choir had performed on a Navy vessel, and as a special treat before the service the boys were given a tour of the famous aircraft carrier.

The Choir supported both the Sixth Form and Senior School Carol Services at St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral during the last week of term. The Sixth Form Carol Service was a true celebration of the school’s diversity – with students worshipping together from China, Hong Kong, Spain, Italy, Serbia and France, contributing in their own special way alongside the school’s Choirs and Orchestra.

Christmas in the Community for St John’s College Chapel Choir

The final event of the term was the College Carol Service – this certainly didn’t disappoint. The chapel choir lead the service which was broadcast live around the world on the internet. Music included all the traditional Christmas favourites as well as many new arrangements of the carols It was a wonderful way to end a successful term for the Choir.

Harry Burn has been in the choir for 4 years and now is one of the Choral Scholars. He commented. “The carol service was a magical experience and something I will never forget. I am very proud to have the opportunity to sing in such an amazing choir – and to do so live on a broadcast around the world was sensational”
