JELLY MUSIC TRAINING - 1ST MAY 2012

Schools were given the opportunity to sign up for a FREE interactive curriculum resource, fully funded by Portsmouth Music Service (annual license £150). This has been created by Jelly Music, one of the Portsmouth Music Hub partners.

The twilight training session will take place on Tuesday 1st May 2012, 16.00pm - 17.30pm at Langstone Junior School for all schools who have signed up. All schools must send a representative from their school to receive your interactive resource.

All schools who have signed up, will receive an additional e-mail in the next few days regarding this training session from the Music Service.

OPEN REHEARSAL FOR WIND AND BRASS PLAYERS

Through the Portsmouth Music Hub local young wind and brass players have the chance to play with Highbury Area Band and Portsmouth Music Service Wind Bands. This opportunity is free to all musicians in the city.

This opportunity gives musicians a chance to play some big pieces of music and be part of a fantastic ensemble. Experienced musicians will be on hand in each section to help out and give their invaluable experience and knowledge.

ARTSMARK TRAINING

A number of schools have applied for Artsmark in Round 12 and schools will hear the results of the Assessments and moderations in May - good luck everyone!

For those schools who have not yet applied, who are thinking of applying for the first time or who are renewing their Artsmark, the application forms for Round 13 in September 2012 are online. Visit www.artsmark.org.uk/apply

Once you have registered, you can look at the form and see what is required - this does not commit you to anything.

The Music Service is leading an informal training session in the summer term on June 12th at 4pm - 5pm at Isambard Brunel Junior School. This session is suitable for any school wanting to find out about the process or complete the application process and will include top tips to make the process as manageable as possible.

The Arts Council Target is for 50% of schools in the country to achieve Artsmark - we would like to aspire towards 100% of schools in Portsmouth achieving Artsmark and we are keen to support you.

BEGINNER RECORDER FESTIVALS

There are two Beginner Recorder Festivals this year. These festivals are open to all schools who buy into Portsmouth Music Service.

If your school does not buy into the Music Service, there will be cost of £45 for your school to take part.

SINGATHLON SINGATHON!

Portsmouth Music Service has arranged a Singathlon singathon on Friday 29th June 2012 on Guildhall Square.

This is an informal and fun sing through of 10 songs from the Singathlon publication to celebrate the run up to the Olympics which will be less than a month away. This event to open to all schools who would like to come down and sing together for the community.

Schools have a copy of the Singathlon songbook and schools can photocopy the lyric sheets for pupils has this is an informal fun singathon!

The ten songs are: Five United Rings (please sing ‘Olympic’ in place of the words ‘great sporting’ and ‘united’). Train, Train, Train; Try your Best; Live a More Active Life; The Archer; I’ve got a Brand New Bicycle; Bronze, Silver and Gold, Medal Ceremony; Losers Like Me; Aim High.

Please let the Music Service know how many pupils you would like to bring along by Friday 15th June 2012.

UPDATE Portsmouth Music Service Songbooks

Thank you to all the schools who have contacted us to let us know how much your pupils are enjoying performing the songs from Singathlon.

Pupils all over the country are now singing the Portsmouth songs in their Olympic celebrations which is great!

Further to your feedback Portsmouth Music Hub will be producing a Primary school songbook in the Autumn term all about the sea creatures, which we hope you will enjoy singing in school choirs and as part of your thematic planning.

NEW ENSEMBLES FOR SEPTEMBER:

Portsmouth Music Service is setting up two new ensembles:

Junior Rock Band and Senior Rock Band

The Junior Rock Band is an opportunity for all Guitarists, Keyboard players, Percussionists to come along and enjoy being part of a Rock Band and will be given opportunities to perform at concerts throughout the year.

The Senior Rock Band is a year long course which pupils need to sign up for, at the end of the year they will take a RockSchool exam which can count towards one of their GCSEs.

More details of these ensembles will follow in the next few weeks.

Beginner Orchestra

Beginner Wind Band will be combining with the Young Strings to form a Beginner Orchestra in order to extend access to all beginners across the city.

The Oboes have arrived!

Portsmouth Music Service is setting up an Oboe programme to enable more learners in the city to access this wonderful instrument. Details will follow shortly.

OFSTED UPDATE

Ofsted’s triennial report on music education, ‘Music in schools: wider still, and wider - Quality and inequality in music education 2008-11’ published on Friday 2 March 2012. The report is available on the Ofsted website: www.Ofsted.gov.uk/publications

The report is based on evidence from inspections of music between September 2008 and July 2011 in 90 primary schools and 90 secondary schools. The schools were selected to provide a sample of those in differing contexts and geographical locations across England. However, the schools selected for the survey did not include schools that were in special measures or had been given a notice to improve.

The report identifies found wide differences in the quality and quantity of music education in schools across England. One in five of the schools visited were judged inadequate for music. In too many music lessons there was insufficient emphasis placed on active music making, and too much focus on talking or written exercises. The scarcity of good vocal work in secondary schools, where nearly half of those inspected were judged inadequate for singing, and the underuse of music technology across all levels were found to be significant barriers to pupils’ musical progress.

Key findings

• Good or outstanding musical education was seen in 68 of the 180 primary and secondary schools inspected. In 41 of the 180 schools, provision for music education was inadequate. These results compare poorly with overall school performance in inspections.

• There was considerable variation between the participation rates of different groups of pupils. In primary schools, one in every three girls was participating in extra-curricular music, compared with one in every seven boys. In secondary schools, only 6% of students with disabilities or special educational needs were involved in additional instrumental or vocal tuition, compared to 14% of students without these needs.

• The most effective schools recognised that regular, sustained experiences were essential to secure good musical progress. Schools where curriculum provision was weaker showed limited understanding about musical progression or did not give enough time for music.

OFSTED UPDATEKey findings continued

• Too much music teaching continued to be dominated by the spoken or written word, rather than by musical sounds. Lessons were planned diligently, but not always prepared for musically.

• Assessment in secondary schools was frequently over-complicated and did not focus enough on the musical quality of students’ work. In both primary and secondary schools, insufficient use was made of audio recording and teachers’ listening skills to assess and improve pupils’ work.

• Achievement in singing was good or outstanding in only a third of the primary schools visited. Not enough emphasis was placed on improving the quality of vocal work or developing other aspects of musical learning through singing. Singing was a major weakness in nearly half of the secondary schools visited.

• The use of music technology was inadequate or non-existent in three fifths of the primary schools and over a third of the secondary schools inspected.

• Local authority music services made good contributions to the musical and personal progress of particular groups of pupils. However, there were considerable inequalities in funding and provision between local authorities, and between schools within local authorities. Two thirds of the primary schools were participating in ‘Wider Opportunities’ programmes. However, the length and quality of these projects were variable, and continuation rates were too low.

• Not enough school leaders and managers were holding external partners to account, or robustly challenging the quality of classroom curriculum music provision in their own schools. There was limited take-up and impact of continuing professional development (CPD) in both primary and secondary schools. The professional isolation of music teachers was again apparent, as it was in the last Ofsted music survey.

• Continued government funding and support for music education is welcomed by Ofsted, as are the new music hubs from September 2012. However, inspection evidence suggests that these alone are not sufficient to provide a good musical education, and that the quality of schools’ music provision and their coordination with external partnerships is of crucial importance.

OFSTED UPDATEThe report recommends that schools give sufficient, regular time for developing aural awareness and musical understanding, and ensure that opportunities for pupils’ practical, creative application and response to music are given priority.

Nearly all the schools recognised the importance of promoting a diverse range of musical styles, but far fewer had a clear understanding about how students should make good musical progress.

Portsmouth Music Service ensembles provide young people with a platform to develop and improve their skills, boost confidence in performance and gain experience playing with other musicians. The range of ensembles caters for musicians of all levels in a wide range of instruments. All ensembles are free of charge and open to everyone who is in full-time education and under the age of 19. Below is a list of ensembles and their rehearsal details.

Portsmouth Sings!Everyone has a voice!

“Portsmouth Sings!” choirs are part of the Music Service’s choral provision. There is a charge for £30 for the term (10 sessions) which needs to be paid up front.

The choir is fun and there is no need to read music. Just come along and bring a bottle of water.
