About this Guide

Portsmouth is the second largest town in Dominica and is situated on the northwest coast of the island. Perched between two towering mountains and shallow seas that scintillate in the sunlight, the town merits its old French name ‘Grand Anse’ (large bay).

Rich in history and a spectacular topography, great restaurants serving delicious and authentic dishes, marvelous black sand beaches, thrilling activities, and wonderful people, Portsmouth is ideal for business or pleasure. To the discerning eye, this is the most beautiful town.

Almost year round the weather is perfect for a hike to the Cabrits National Park to savor some of the islands’ history and confront some breathtaking views, or for a boat cruise up the Indian River. The list of things to do in Portsmouth goes on and on, however, the perfect antidote to an invigorating day is to sit and watch the sun fade in the sky, revealing the most amazing sunset.
