2 Cancer Council POsh auction 2011

“Welcome to POsh 2011. Over the past 12 years, POsh has raised $7 million for cancer research and support services.”

POsh plays a tremendous role in supporting the work of our leading researchers and the projects currently underway. it is the ongoing success of POsh that ensures the work being done in the lab, at universities and in research institutes by our researchers, is sustained and championed.

Cancer Council currently funds over 180 independent researchers and our keynote speaker, Professor roger reddel, is just one of these researchers. his work on telomeres is internationally recognised as a breakthrough for cancer treatment, and his innovative findings will have a tremendous impact for cancer patients, as will all of the work our researchers do.

We are committed to making a real difference today to how cancer is prevented and treated, and how each cancer patient is supported, and our research priorities are shaped by this engagement.

each year, POsh receives tremendous support from organisations, corporate partners, sponsors and individuals. it is thanks to your support that each year the evening boasts a wonderful array of prizes and unique experiences, which bring such excitement to the event and enthusiasm to the bidding.

We thank each guest for the passion you bring to our cause, and for your true enjoyment of the event itself. Your enthusiasm is inspiring!

Behind the scenes, the POsh Committee work tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that POsh will be another great success.

“At POSH, we come together to recognise that cancer doesn’t discriminate and by combining our strengths, knowledge and support, we will achieve our aim of defeating cancer.”

andrew PenmanCEO, Cancer Council NSW

C ancer Council is an independent, forward-thinking community of people making a real difference to the defeat of cancer – POsh is an important part of this community.

Our connection to world-leading research projects and the insights and discoveries these studies bring to light, positions Cancer Council at the forefront of the global response to cancer.

“On behalf of the POsh Committee, thank you for your generous contribution to Cancer Council and your attendance here tonight.”

no doubt, this year’s event will be just as successful, and it will be fantastic to see many familiar friends, and several new faces, enjoying the magic of this evening.

We are proud to highlight the achievements and work of those involved in the Cancer Council’s research programs, which POsh so generously supports.

For many of us who don’t have a scientific mind, cancer research seems other-worldly and difficult to understand, but behind every discovery, every new treatment or drug, is a dedicated scientist or researcher, who has spent years, working tirelessly with one goal in mind – to beat cancer.

We are proud to support each researcher here tonight. We have a mission – the control and eventual defeat of cancer. these are the people that will ensure that we meet our goal. We hope that each of you gains a new insight into the work achieved by Cancer Council.

“We thank you for being here tonight and for your contribution to Cancer Council through the POSH Auction. Your enthusiastic participation is making a difference and will continue to do so.”

stephen robertsChairman, POSH Committee

O n behalf of the POsh Committee, it is with great excitement that i thank you all for attending and supporting POsh 2011.

it is a privilege to be part of the success of POsh and together with you, we achieved a record result of over $1 million in 2010. POsh has now contributed over $7 million to the work of Cancer Council. it is testament to the generosity of all our guests and supporters that we achieved such an amazing result.

rOger reddeL Telomeres

O ur bodies constantly make new cells so we can grow, replace worn-out cells and replace damaged cells after injury. But there are limits on this cellular proliferation: normal

cells can be replaced only a finite number of times. in contrast, cancer cells are described as “immortal” because their proliferation capacity is unlimited.

the immortality of 85% of cancers depends on an enzyme called telomerase – discovered by australian-born dr. elizabeth Blackburn who, with her us colleagues, was awarded the 2009 nobel Prize for medicine. We found that an alternative process causes cellular immortality in the other 15% of cancers.

this stark difference between normal and cancer cells presents an opportunity to kill cancer cells with few or no side-effects on normal cells – by targeting treatments at the processes that make cancer cells immortal.

to beat cancer, we need to understand why and how it happens, and to discover ways to stop the disease in its tracks. this is our vision – and together we can realise it.

Professor roger reddelDirector of the Children’s Medical Research Institute

sir Lorimer dods Professor, sydney Medical school university of sydney

Fellow, australian academy of science

Roger Reddel was granted a 5-year Program Grant in 2006 and 2011 for his research into the alternative lengthening of telomeres and how this can be used to improve treatment of all cancers.

“i am honoured to be the keynote speaker for POsh 2011. Cancer Council has provided major, long-term support of my research team’s work on cancer cell immortality.”

Professor robyn Ward(MB BS PhD UNSW, FRACP)

“Changing the way bowel cancer is diagnosed”

Professor Ward is leading a Project grant to identify and establish better diagnostic and clinical practices for bowel cancer.

“Our research aims to ensure that patients facing bowel cancer receive the best clinical diagnosis, advice and treatment from the moment they enter the doctor’s office. We can ensure that our findings are translated into effective and practical processes for doctors in their clinics via risk - profiling for early detection, effective hi-tech screening programs and customised treatments.”

One of our most prolific and dedicated researchers, robyn Ward has been funded by Cancer Council nsW since 1999 via Project grants into pancreatic and colorectal cancers. in addition to this robyn has led a 5 year streP into the treatment of colorectal cancer since 2006.

Professor Murray norris(BSc ANU, MAppSc NSWIT, PhD UNSW)

“Finding one cancer cell in a million”

Leukaemia is the most common form of childhood cancer. almost all children with leukaemia initially respond well to treatment and then go into remission. unfortunately, up to a quarter later relapse and the majority of these children do not survive.

“For many patients, it isn’t until cancer reappears, that we are aware they were at risk of relapse, and often this is too late to make a difference to the outcome. By being able to detect one cancer cell in a million normal cells in a bone marrow sample, we hope to achieve improved outcomes and bring real hope for children with leukaemia.”

since 2006 Murray norris has received two 5 year program grants for his research into childhood leukaemia. his detection process is now being trialled in five australian children’s hospitals.

associate Professor Freddy sitas(BSc, MSc (Med), DPhil)

“Discovering how cancer affects all Australians”

as the director of the Cancer research division at Cancer Council nsW, Professor sitas is involved in multiple projects including the Cervical health study, the nsW Cancer, Lifestyle and evaluation of risk study (CLear), the 45 and up study, the skin health study and the intersCOPe study, amongst many others.

“the CLear study will provide the most comprehensive information to date on the lifestyle and genetic factors that influence cancer in the nsW community. By looking at the causes of cancer, we can find invaluable information for future cancer treatments, prevention and cure.

the information from our research programs will result in significant changes to current cancer practices and policies, and ultimately will significantly reduce the burden of cancer upon our community.

dr Karen Canfell (B.E. (Hons), DPhil)

“Sharing Australian cervical cancer expertise with the world”

dr Canfell is an investigator and the research coordinator for the nsW Cancer, Lifestyle and evaluation of risk (CLear) study. she is also principal investigator for the Cervical Cancer Modelling projects, which are an international collaboration focused on evaluating various cervical screening protocols in the context of hPV vaccination.

“Worldwide, cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in women. By taking what we have learnt in australia through our own study of the cervical cancer screening program, and sharing that knowledge with other countries, we are making important progress towards eradicating the disease.”

“Investigating the link between who you are, where you live, and your cancer experience”

Professor dianne O’Connell is the Principal investigator on the Men’s health study, the Pathways to diagnosis of thyroid Cancer study, the aboriginal Patterns of Cancer Care Project, the Pancreatic Cancer Patterns of Care study and the nsW Lung Cancer study amongst many others.

By examining patterns of treatment for the major cancers, Professor O’Connell’s work provides significant information to improve future patient care in metropolitan and rural areas, and also amongst aboriginal people and minority groups.

“the aboriginal Patterns of Cancer Care project is the first of its kind to take place in australia. We know that the information we gain from this project, will help to address current needs in the aboriginal community, and identify opportunities to provide positive change and support to the community and their treatment options.”

dr david smith (BA, MPH, PhD)

“Creating better outcomes for men with prostate cancer”

Prostate cancer is the leading cancer in australia due to the growth and ageing population and our increased ability to detect early prostate cancer.

as a research Fellow in Cancer Council nsW’s Cancer epidemiology research unit, dr david smith is investigating the current testing and treatments for prostate cancer as part of a four year national health and Medical research Council grant.

“By modelling the effects of testing, and looking at the long-term effects of different treatments, we can gather accurate information that can be used to plan for and provide adequate cancer care services now and in the future.

survival after a prostate cancer diagnosis has increased substantially in the past two decades. using the information generated by our studies, we hope to have both longer survival and better quality of life outcomes for patients in the years ahead.”

dr Kerrie Mcdonald(PhD, BSc)

“A better chance of survival, and a better quality of life for those affected by brain cancer”

each year in australia at least 1200 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour, and 75% of these patients do not respond to treatment. dr Mcdonald is currently working on two brain cancer research projects, which are supported by Cancer Council grants.

“For patients diagnosed with aggressive brain cancers, the reality is that conventional therapies offer very little chance of beating the disease. By looking closely at the mechanism behind the aggressive growth of these brain tumours, we will be able to identify more effective treatments to stop their growth and provide patients with a better chance of survival and quality of life.”

Kerrie Mcdonald’s research into high grade glioma (a particularly invasive and aggressive form of brain cancer) is supported by Cancer Council nsW via a 3 year project grant that was awarded in 2009. she also co-heads a 5 year streP program which began in 2008.

associate Professor susan henshall(MBBS)

“...personalised cancer treatment for each cancer patient...”

associate Professor susan henshall from the garvan institute of Medical research leads a program called PriMe – Pharmacogenomic research for individualised Medicine, which is working towards a personalised approach to cancer treatment.

“We want to understand why people with the same tumour type, who are given the same course of chemotherapy, have varying response rates and side effects. this project provides real potential for improving outcomes for all cancer patients, as we are working toward a time when cancer therapies will be tailor-made for each patient.”

in 2010 susan henshall’s team were awarded a 5 year Program grant to research individualised medicine and its application to the treatment of cancer.

Vince sorrentiMaster of Ceremonies

i ’ve been involved in the POsh auction for the past twelve years and can say without hesitation that it is the best organised event of its kind and generates some of the highest returns. Cancer is an affliction

that rarely attracts the publicity commensurate with its impact on the community.

it is my pleasure to continue to be involved in the POsh auction and wish Cancer Council every success in their fundraising and research. i hope one day to look back nostalgically on a time when there was no easy cure for cancer.

Cancer Council gratefully acknowledges the generous contribution of Vince sorrenti to every POsh auction from 2000-2011.
