Welcome to the April Edition of the Winster Magazine

F inally we have had days with warm sunshine! The world seems to be just a little happier and

friendly with a little more light. If you appear to see only clouds, you know of course that the sun is just behind them, also in a figurative sense. Maybe Spring will encourage you to start anew? The handy Winster Directory (page 21) has been enhanced and now gives you additional info & contact details for local groups, opening times and events, etc. Please have a look at it and let me know if there is anything that needs changing or adding.

Keep well, Ztu|

Readers’ Letters & Noticeboard

Winster Surgery will be closed from 1:00pm on the 12th April and the 10th May due to staff training.

Sheila Brassington

Martin, Emma and Marion would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness following the sad loss of Sheila. It was wonderful to see such a packed church to celebrate Sheila's life and to remember her. Thank you to Rev Stephen Monk and the village choir for helping to make the service so memorable. Thank you also to the Miners Standard for coping so well with the huge numbers that came to the funeral tea. £1,000 was donated in memory of Sheila and this has been sent to the Derby Hospitals Trust Macmillan Unit. Winster and its residents are very special at sad times such as this. Thank you all.

The Winster Market House will be open every day from 11am - 5pm starting 8th April (source: www.nationaltrust.org)

I would like to thank everyone for their kind cards, gifts, flowers, cake and my voucher on my retirement from the Village Store. I enjoyed seven years serving the people of Winster, where I grew up. I will be putting the voucher towards some new garden furniture to spend my retirement on. I will be in Winster for the Carnival and hope to see everyone there. Thanks Again, Ann Elliott

Winster Local History Group Next Meetings Monday 27 March at 7.30 in the Burton Institute Hidden Lives: Leek’s Extraordinary Embroiderers, by Cathryn Walton Monday 24 April 2017 at 7.30 in the Burton Institute, Winster Winster and the Railway at Rowsley and Darley Dale, by Glynn Waite The railway from Ambergate to Rowsley was opened in 1849 and extended to Buxton in 1863, and in the years that followed it became Winster’s main point of contact with the outside world. The stations and sidings at Darley Dale feature in several stories in our book Winster: A Peak District Village Remembers, so it’s surprising that we have not had a talk on the subject till now. Glynn is a founder member of the Rowsley Association, set up in 1991 for the ex-railwaymen from the area and their families to keep in touch through an annual reunion and a newsletter of articles (now running to 750 pages in 48 issues). As well as a full command of the historical facts, he has a wealth of stories and anecdotes, so come prepared for an enthusiast’s illustrated account of what the railway meant to Winster. Everyone welcome.

Vicar’s Letter - Easter "Mary Magdalene came to Jesus` tomb and saw the stone had been moved.....she turned around and saw Him; “Rabbouni!” (Teacher) she said..."

Mary has been portrayed in many ways down the ages. She's been written about, drawn and painted and she's been made an enigma in films and on the stage. Mary was the first witness to the risen Lord. She was the broken sinner who was healed, forgiven and made whole by Jesus Christ. I know it sounds sentimental but in the Mary - Jesus relationship love really does conquer all. I read recently of a wonderful story from WWII. A painting of the risen Christ with Mary Magdalene by the 16th Century artist Titian. It was London's most treasured picture. For a month in 1942 it was, by public demand, the sole painting on display in the National Gallery when thousands had been removed to Welsh slate mines for safekeeping. It was cherished because as the bombs fell, Londoners found reassurance in this story that love is so strong that it can survive death and the forces of evil. A picture of an event which speaks of new life and newness of life gave people hope and trust in the darkest of days. The Easter story follows on from the total despair of Good Friday. Jesus naked, tortured and terrified on a Cross died for all humanity, not just of the people of around 33AD, but for people of all time and in all places. That includes you and me, your loved ones and your enemies, the saints and the sinners of all time. Jesus did that and then what happened? Did he return from the dead in a blaze of glory or with amazing pyrotechnics? Did Jesus come forth like a superstar? No, the resurrection of Jesus the Christ was very low key - Mary saw him and thought he was a gardener. He looked like a man simply pottering around the garden. The love Jesus had for Mary, who was healed and whole after her encounter with Jesus, is seen in this Easter Sunday Gospel. But it's not just a two-way relationship. The Easter Story; The Christian Story; The Story of Jesus the Crucified and Risen Lord is that the world has been redeemed. The world, as Gerard Manly Hopkins said, is now 'charged with the grandeur of God'. What started at Christmas is now finished. Now God walks with us, he rests in the hearts of those who are Baptised in His name. He rests in those who love others as Jesus loved others. A Christian cannot be passive, inactive and apathetic - To claim to be a follower of Jesus we must talk daily to God, then care for the marginalised, the widow and orphan, the refugee and the sinner. We must love and never tire of loving for that is what the Lord commanded. At the last supper Jesus removed his clothes and washed his disciples’ feet. He was the servant. We too are called to be servants of all. To serve our families, communities, societies and the whole of creation. Mary called Jesus 'Teacher' - may the Risen Lord teach each of us how to give and not to count the cost, to serve and not to look for reward, to fight for justice and peace and not to heed the wounds we may receive. May I wish you and yours the love and peace of the risen Lord; Happy Easter - for Jesus has Risen indeed!!! Love and prayers. Revd. Stephen Monk (Rector Darley Dale, South Darley & Winster)

Calling all men who like to sing.... Winster Village Choir, currently

made up of 8 Sopranos, 4 Altos and 3 (lady) Tenors, would love to welcome some male voices, particularly Baritones or Basses, so we can sing in 4-part harmony, with that lovely warmth and depth of sound that the lower voices provide! Winster Village Shop Search for the Golden Egg. £25 reward.

For some time now I have been on the lookout for the Winster equivalent to Cartmel Village Shop’s sticky toffee pudding, which is a really good earner for the shop, selling by the thousands every year. I would love to hear from anyone who has a good idea for something that would be seen as being unique to Winster and with potential for selling well. It could be a food product or an object. Ideas can be passed to me directly through my letter box at Doe Lea House on Main Street, or by email to [email protected]. Alternatively leave a written description in the shop for my attention. A £25 prize awaits the person who comes up with an idea, which in the view of the board and the shop manager is workable. Multiple prizes could be available. Mike Hatfield on behalf of the WVSA Board.

Reminder: Winster Hill Race 29th June 2017 Can You Help?

Come rain or shine the Winster Wakes Week Hill Race is an annual challenge that attracts runners of all abilities and ages. Last year we achieved a record number of entrants and made, with the help of sponsors, significant

improvements to the course signage and awards.

The event would not be possible without the villagers who volunteer to help. This year we need new volunteers.

Can you help with:- Taking care of the trophies and medals and presenting them to the

winners with the help of the carnival queen? Help distribute entry forms before registration and help the carnival

queen start the race. Direct runners at key intersections of the course keeping an eye out

for approaching traffic.

If you can help please contact Chris Williams on 01629 650580 or [email protected]

As one of the activities on World Book Day, children in Key Stage 2 wrote postcards to friends to recommend to them their favourite book. Have a read and see if we have

motivated you to try a new book!

D ear Cerys, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid is my favourite book because there’s a boy called Greg Heffley who’s always getting into trouble. The author is

Jeff Kinney. It’s really hard to put it down. It is very adventurous. I like it because it’s full of laughter. See you later Bethany.

D ear Molly, you need to read this book. It is called The Rabbit And The Ferret. Amazingly, it is the best book in the world. I think you will like it. I hope it

will become your favourite book like it is mine. Do you want to read it, yes or no? It is my favourite book because there is adventure. The author is Roald Dahl. See you soon. Love from Sian.

D ear Daniel, you should really read this book called the Hobbit. It is my favourite book because it is very adven-

turous, interesting and very exciting. I think you will really enjoy this book, from Oliver.

D ear Lola. You have to read these books by Jeff Kinney. Surprisingly, they are my favourite books, they are the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid

series. When I read one of the books I never want to put it down. Luckily, they are the best books in the world. I know they are popular because they are an international bestseller! Amazingly, they are the best books I have ever read. I really think you would like them, Cerys.

D ear Odie, I can’t wait to tell you about this book, Riley’s Believe It Or Not. It’s my absolute favourite book because it’s got lots of facts.

See you soon, from Liam. 11

Year unknown...do you know it...?

Bank Holidays and Other Confusions by John Geddes

C ompared to other "Bank Holiday" weekends, Easter is a tricky time for working out what is open or closed. While Easter Monday is a standard Bank Holiday, Good Friday isn't ‐ like Christmas Day

it is in fact a Public Holiday. In most respects, it doesn't matter which label you use, but there are a few areas where it does make a difference. Hulleys doesn't run buses through Winster on Bank Holi‐days, but they do run a normal weekday service on Good Friday ‐ although "normal" looks to be a special timetable because of the closure of Darley Bridge (see page 20). East Midlands trains also run a normal Friday service ‐ but do check before travelling as other operators may operate a Sunday service, a special Bank Holiday service, or nothing at all. Retailing also gets complicated over Easter. Supermarkets and pubs may have stricter limits on the hours during which they can serve alcohol on Good Friday (but the rules seem to vary from case to case). And on Easter Sunday, larger stores (those that would normally be limited to 6 hours' Sunday opening ‐ which includes most supermarkets and garden centres) are not allowed to open at all. Some businesses and public services open on Good Friday, but close on the following Tuesday ‐ which apparently follows the medieval Hocktide festival. And looking further ahead, Civil Serv‐ants get a day off to allow them to celebrate the Queen's official birthday ‐ which may see govern‐ment offices closed on the Friday before Spring Bank Holiday, or the Tuesday afterwards.

All in all, quite a mess: worth double‐checking before making plans!
