Position Description: Stepping Into – Summer 2016/17 Position Title: Attorney-General’s Department Intern Location: Canberra Position Description: The Attorney-General's Department delivers programs and policies to maintain and improve Australia's law and justice framework, and strengthen our national security and emergency management. Through the Australian Government Solicitor, we also provide legal services to the Commonwealth (including legal advice and representation). Our department is the central policy and coordinating element of the Attorney-General's portfolio, for which the Attorney-General and the Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Counter-Terrorism are responsible. This summer, the department is offering three paid internships for suitable candidates through the Stepping into Program. The internship will commence in the summer university break beginning November 2016 and will run for up to 12 weeks. Applications for these positions close on Friday 16 September 2016 at 5:00pm AEST. You'll get an excellent insight into how the Australian Government and the Australian Public Service operate. The work you will do:The work of the Attorney-General's Department is diverse. Placements will be offered across the department and include contributing to policy advice, delivering programs or legal advice in:• civil justice policy and programs• criminal law policy and programs• international law• constitutional law• emergency management• national security• commercial and dispute resolution legal practice• corporate functions like information technology, human resources and finance.

Duties of the position:Under general direction, summer interns will:• undertake activities/projects as assigned. These activities may include:o research assignmentso project work on policy developmento project or case management, and/ oro preparing briefing material, submissions and reports• perform the full range of associated administrative tasks within your line area• contribute to overall planning and team activities• perform additional duties as required at the APS Level 2.

Who we are looking for:We're looking for undergraduate students who are interested in working at the forefront of program delivery, policy and legal practice. Our summer interns need to be enthusiastic and motivated, have integrity, and have strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.

You don't need a law background to apply. We're looking for undergraduates from a range of disciplines including:• business• commerce• economics• humanities• information technology• law• political science• media and communications• public administration• social sciences.

Eligibility:To join the Stepping Into Intern Program, you must:• be an Australian citizen• have no more than two semesters to complete in your undergraduate degree orhave completed your undergraduate degree not more than three years before the program starts• have a credit average or higher grade point average in your studies• supply us with evidence of your qualifications• successfully complete an employment screen—we will conduct checks to verify identity and criminal records.
