The Opportunity

The University of Tennessee at Martin invites applications and nominations for the

position of Dean of the College of Business and Global Affairs. This position aggressively

promotes continued development of its academic programs, research productivity, and

national reputation of excellence, built upon a commitment to access and diversity. This

position is appointed by the Chancellor.

The primary responsibilities of the Dean are to promote academic excellence and to

provide leadership and administration for the College. The Dean is expected to provide

visionary leadership in strategic initiatives to enhance the standing of the College, adhere

to and promote the principles of AACSB, work in collaboration with the faculty on

budget planning and accountability, shared governance, enhancement of diversity,

engagement of the College with the wider community, and other elements of

administrative policy.

The University of Tennessee at Martin: An Overview

The University of Tennessee at Martin provides high-quality undergraduate and

graduate educational programs to West Tennessee and beyond. From the founding in

1900 of Hall-Moody Institute, through the establishment in 1927 of UT Junior College, to

today’s status as a comprehensive public university, UT Martin is committed to

preparing students for success in the global economy.

The main campus is located in Northwest Tennessee about 125 miles northeast of

Memphis, 150 miles northwest of Nashville and 60 miles north of Jackson. UT Martin has

more extended-campus teaching centers than any other public, four-year university in

the state. University centers in Jackson, McNairy County/Selmer, Parsons, Somerville and

Ripley, plus dual-enrollment course offerings in high schools, bring UT Martin academic

programs to people across West Tennessee. UT Martin Online provides online programs

for both undergraduate and graduate education and is the University of Tennessee

System’s largest provider of online education.

UT Martin's investment in its faculty and instructional technology helps ensure that the

university's graduates are prepared to meet the challenges in an international economy.

The Instructional Technology Center, located in the Paul Meek Library, supports

university faculty members create the best learning experience possible both in the

classroom and online.

UT Martin had a tremendous impact on the West Tennessee economy during the 2014-15

fiscal year, generating $481.1 million in added income for the region. These results are

based on a contracted study conducted by Economic Modeling Specialists International

in Moscow, Idaho. Released in March 2016, the study assesses the impact of university,

student, visitor and alumni spending on the region and calculates the benefits generated

by the university for students, taxpayers and society as a whole. The results of this study

show that the added regional income generated by the university is equivalent to creating

8,074 new jobs.

UT Martin fosters leadership development among students and in communities across

West Tennessee. The university’s Ned Ray McWherter Institute offers a three-year,

progressive, interdisciplinary program that includes sessions in leadership and

professional skills. The WestStar Leadership Program is the state’s oldest and largest

regional leadership program, offering leadership and informational sessions to

participants and boasting 856 graduates to date. UT Martin also welcomes high-achieving

high school students to two Tennessee Governor's Schools: the Tennessee Governor's

School for the Humanities and the Tennessee Governor's School for the Agricultural

Sciences.

Outside the classroom, UT Martin students have multiple opportunities for involvement

in the university community. More than 150 organizations are available for students to

join including academic clubs, honor societies, service groups, student government,

fraternities and sororities, and special student associations. The Office of Campus

Recreation offers many on- and off-campus recreational opportunities, while the

university’s Department of Visual and Theatre Arts and Department of Music offer

ongoing cultural events to the region. UT Martin competes in NCAA Division I athletics

as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. The university has the only collegiate rodeo

team in Tennessee.

College Highlights

The UT Martin College of Business and Global Affairs includes two academic

departments in which undergraduate students major in accounting, finance, economics,

political science, international studies, information systems, management and marketing.

Hands-on, real-world experience is a key component in these degree fields, and College

of Business and Global Affairs students are able to complete practical experience both at

home and in other areas through travel opportunities.

Students with concentrations in sport business have opportunities to work at the NFL

Super Bowl, Major League Baseball spring training, professional golf tournaments and

other events. Finance students, with access to a Bloomberg Terminal, successfully

compete in the TVA Investment Challenge. Students also score well in the Conference

of State Banking Supervisors Case Study, and many serve as interns with the Tennessee

General Assembly and public service organizations at the state capital. Students and

faculty members frequently collaborate on field-specific research.

The college also serves graduate students seeking MBA degrees, and the online MBA

program continues to receive high recognition from U.S. News & World Report, The

Princeton Review, Affordable Colleges Online and others.

The Martin Community

Martin is centrally located between Memphis and Nashville and is just an hour’s drive

from Jackson and Paducah, Kentucky. Reelfoot Lake, Kentucky Lake and Land Between

the Lakes recreational areas are within easy driving distance. The city was founded in

1873 and named in honor of Captain William Martin, a prosperous landowner who

settled in the area in 1838.

Martin features a revitalized historic downtown business district that includes a coffee

shop, restaurants, shopping and nightlife. Downtown Martin is the site of the annual

Tennessee Soybean Festival, which attracts top entertainment and celebrates the area’s

rich agricultural heritage. An active Town & Gown Association helps to foster a positive

working relationship between the city and university. The traditional college-town

setting and related amenities offer a perfect environment for students who attend the

University of Tennessee at Martin.

The Role

The position of Dean requires an appreciation for UT Martin’s mission as a provider of

high-quality undergraduate education with selected advanced degree programs in

service to West Tennessee and beyond. The Dean of the College of Business and Global

Affairs provides leadership for the unit and works with department chairs, faculty, and

staff to achieve the mission of the college and the university. The successful candidate

must demonstrate:

Honesty, integrity and strong ethics

An earned doctorate in business or a closely related discipline and a

record of university teaching and scholarly activity appropriate to an

AACSB-accredited institution.

Successful experience with AACSB accreditation and a commitment to

continued accreditation

Previous college-level administrative leadership experience with evidence

of the ability to lead a complex team to a successful outcome

Evidence of the ability to encourage faculty research and other scholarly

activities

Ability to provide strong leadership to promote the college’s programs

and advance the region

Commitment to a diverse faculty and student body

Evidence of the ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with the

business community, government, and university colleagues

Evidence of the ability to increase gifts and endowments
