(Dr RK Wanjogu and CM Kambo) ) Presentation during the NIB / Collaborators Presentation during the NIB / Collaborators

research findings Workshop, Kenya School of research findings Workshop, Kenya School of Monetary Studies, 3Monetary Studies, 3rdrd to 4 to 4thth July, 2014. July, 2014.

IntroductionIntroduction

Rice (Oryzae sativa) is the third most important food crop in Kenya after maize and wheat

National rice consumption is estimated at 400,000 metric tonnes

Annual production range of 45,000 to 80,000 metric tonnes

Low production is caused mainly by poor natural resource management

And continuous monoculture leading to accumulation of, weeds, diseases and insect pests

PADDY FIELD

ObjectivesObjectivesTo evaluate the efficacy of 6 selected Insecticides against rice pests

To evaluate the efficacy of 4 selected Fungicides against weeds paddy fields

To evaluate the efficacy of 5 selected Herbicides against weeds paddy fields

JustificationJustification

Target pests: Insect pests, diseases and weeds

If uncontrolled, may cause upto 100% yield losses

Evaluation of pest control products should be a continuous processes

For effective pesticide resistance management insecticide screening is necessary

Materials and methodsMaterials and methods

Field experiments : Conducted at MIAD Research Centre between 2012 and 2014

Rice variety, Basmati 370 was planted at a spacing of 15 cm x20 cm

Plot size – 5m by 1 m : In RCBD with 4 replicates

Treatments: 5 including, Local check & untreated control

Example: East trap 4GExample: East trap 4G

RecommendationRecommendationEast trap 4G at the rate of 15 kg to 20 kg per hectare effectively controlled the shoot borers, root borers, leaf folders and gall midges in rice fields.

In addition, significantly more tillers were recorded in plots treated with East trap 4G at 20 kg ha-1 and Cyclone 505 EC 1.0 L ha-1 (Local check) as compared to the untreated control plots

East trap 4G at 20 kg ha-1 recorded significantly taller plants as compared to the local check and untreated control plots

Two season results: East trap4G at 15-20 kg ha-1 may be recommended for the control of shoot borers, root borers, leaf folders and gall midges in rice fields.
