Progression: Player must move to a grid in the square after a pass. Teams should have a player in each grid at all times but rotate. Progression: Pass with weaker foot. Progression: Each pass must 'split' players from the other teams. Progression: Must play a wall pass around another team's player. Game: 4v4v4. Teams must keep their own ball whilst 'hunting' for another. The first team to be in possession of two balls wins the round. Coaching Points: Game: 8v4. Two teams combine, one team defends to make an 8v4. If possession is lost, that player's team becomes the defending team. Aim is to make 10 passes. Movement to support. Weight of pass. Body shape to receive. Create angles to support the split and the wall pass. Encourage high tempo. Description: Square with two teams. Each team has support player (or targets) on opposite sides of the square. One point for six consecutive passes or for passing to both support players in the same possession. Support players are encouraged to move along the line to offer a good angle. Progression: Rotation - When support player receives, they can take the ball into the square, one of the other players takes his/her place on the outside. Progression: Combinations - point for a wall pass/give and go, if they play though the opposition. Coaching Points: Angle of support. Body shape to receive. Team shape - height, width and depth. Could also focus on defending. Press as a group, triggers to press (weak/heavy pass, bad 1st touch etc.). Session

Objective:

Description:5 v 3 with goals. Relatively small area to encouragepressure. The team of five aims to score bycompleting ten passes. If the team of three winspossession they attempt to score in either of thetwo goals as quickly as possible. In this case theteam of 5 must transition and press quickly toprevent the goal. No GK's. Could play as 4 v 2. Couldhave two games running at the same time. Rotateroles regularly.

Coaching Points:Supporting angles and distances. Body shape - playon the 'half turn'. Rotation between players. Height, width and depth. Encourage them to come up withshapes which help keep possession (e.g., diamondwith a central link player - this could also reflectyour system for a match day).

Description:Set up a square with cones marking out the corners. Two teams in the square with target playersdiagonally opposite. Score a point by passing to,then receiving from a corner player. Corner playermust pass to a new player to encourage third manruns and greater support options. If opponents juststand in front of corners - a point can be awarded for10 consecutive passes also. Progression: Cornerplayer brings the ball out into the square, anotherplayer must take his/her place in the corner.

Coaching Points:Quick decisions/use of the ball. Angles of support.Body shape. Movement to support as ball is passedto target player. Awareness - which corner player isthe best option.

Session

Objective:

Description:Divide area into halves, one team in each half.Number players of each team 1-5 (or however manyyou have). Teams pass the ball until a number iscalled. That number sprints to the other half to spoilpossession. The team to keep the ball the longestwins the point. Can call two numbers or change areasize to increase/decrease difficulty.

Coaching Points:Shape of teams to retain possession. Body shape.Speed of play. Pass quickly or hold to draw player in.Playing short and long.

Description:Three teams. Two teams are on opposite sides in alarger zones and are playing together. One defensiveteam is positioned in a narrow middle zone.Progression - One or more defenders can move outof central zone to apply pressure. Progression - limittime or number of passes a team can make beforeplaying through. Progression - one attacking playercan stand in the central zone to link play. Ifdefending team intercepts, the team that gave awaypossession becomes the defending team -encourage quick transitions.

Coaching Points:Aim is to keep the defending team in the middle aslong as possible by successfully playing throughthem. Recognize when to play through and when tokeep possession within own team. Try to movedefenders out of position. Provide height, width anddepth for quick and unpredictable ball circulation. This practice is also very useful for working ondefensive principles with the middle team(compactness, pressure, cover)

Session

Objective:

Description:Two teams in rectangular field. Each team has targetplayers at both ends. Aim is to pass to a targetplayer then support that pass. The target playermust get the ball under control and play to a newteammate. The team then tries to switch to theiropposite target player. A point is scored after a passis received back from the target player. Could alsoaward points for 6 consecutive passes so playersdon't just force the pass and play too direct into thetarget. Progression: target players only allowed afirst time pass.

Coaching Points:Make supporting run to target player as the ball ismoving - do not wait for when it arrives. Body shapeto receive and play to opposite side. Don't force theplay - work an opening.

Description:Three teams of 4 (or adjust to suit) 4 v 4 in thesquare with the aim of keeping possession (goalevery 6, 10 passes etc.) One support team on theoutside passes to team in possession Each grid withsquare is a 1 v 1 but team in possession can rotate(players can switch grids but each grid must onlycontain one player). Team not in possession cannotrotate and must keep a player in each of the grids.Progression - defending team can also rotate. Switchteams after two minutes.

Coaching Points:Coaching points - Make area big by supporting withheight, width and depth. Disguise on the run (showto go, go to show) Angle and timing of supportingruns. Weight of pass from support players.

The reds attempt to play to and receive apass back from a player in the outer square. Theblues attempt to play to and receive a pass backfrom o a teammate outside of the square. The bluesoutside of the square can apply pressure to thereceiving reds in the outer square. The reds in theouter square cannot go outside but try to interceptthe pass to the blues outside.

Two red remain to act as target playersfor when the 4 win possession.

Coaching Points:Body shape to receive. Supporting angles. Weight ofpass. Shape of team in possession (positioning). When to draw in with short passes, when to switchout into space. Progression: Alter the ratios (e.g., 6v3or 6v5) to change the level of difficulty. Also considerarea size. Use bigger area to encourage a mix of shortand long passing whilst also demanding morerunning. Use smaller area for short, sharp passing.
