WASHINGTON - The victim of Monday's vicious pit bull attack in D.C. remains

hospitalized in serious condition.

Catherine Barber, who is in her 70s, was taken to a hospital in critical condition

Monday evening after she was attacked while taking out the trash. She was in the

alley off Southern Avenue, behind her 41st Street home, when she encountered

her neighbor's two pit bulls. One pit bull attacked her.

"It could have happened to anybody, but you -- to think, you can't even go outside

to put your trash in the can and have a dog mangle you," said Henrietta Wright,

Barber's friend.

Barber was severely mauled about the head and neck until police arrived. Officers

shot the dog at least four times, killing it. Police say the pit bull was not fenced in,

nor was it chained up.

Barber has lived in the neighborhood

for more than 50 years. She teaches

yoga, dance and other classes to fellow

seniors at the Fort Davis Community Center.

Those who know Barber say her strength will see her through this.

"Miss Barber is very tough," said Tonya Cousins, who works at the Ft. Davis

Community Center . "Very tough, so if anybody pulled though I'm rooting for

her."

Animal control officers seized a second pit bull belonging to the same owner. Neighbors hope it is not coming back.

"I would not want them to, but that's not my call," said Betty Young, Barber's neighbor.

Police kill pit bull as it attacks its ownerStaff report

Posted September 26, 2008 at 8:41 a.m. , updated September 26, 2008 at 8:41 a.m.

Evansville police shot and killed a pit bull late Thursday night after the dog attacked

its owner.

According to Officer Tyrone Wood, the incident occurred at 409 E. Eichel Ave. around

11:30 p.m.

Wood said when police arrived, in response to a 911 call, the living room floor was

covered in blood, the dog was ripping the arm of owner Tony Burden, 24, and a

woman identified as Burden’s wife, Miriam Engelhardt, was screaming “He won’t let

go” and hitting the dog, Brutis, with an aluminum bat.

Burden was shouting, “Help me, shoot him,” according to a police report.

Burden was taken to Deaconess Hospital with arm wounds and was in fair condition

today.

Engelhardt told police Burden, who had been outside arguing with a neighbor, was

attacked by the dog after he came inside and sat down in a living room chair.

AMR and the Evansville Fire Department were dispatched and the animal was picked

up by Animal Control.

Pit bulls "tag-teamed" victim, 71Huong Le, the 71-year-old woman who was attacked by two pit bulls Monday in SeaTac, is recovering from severe injuries.

By Christine Clarridge

Seattle Times staff reporter

This was supposed to be a good year for Huong Le.

"She was in good health and had rediscovered her

family in Vietnam," said Eric John Makus, who was

raised by Le and regards her as his adopted mother.

She was planning to visit Vietnam this year, he said.

The 71-year-old immigrant is now bound in

bandages at a Seattle hospital, recovering from a

brutal pit-bull attack Monday just feet from the front

door of the SeaTac home where she works as a

live-in caretaker.

Le spent more than 10 hours in surgery Monday at

the trauma center at Harborview Medical Center,

where surgeons worked painstakingly to preserve

her hearing and reattach her ears, both of which had

been ripped from her head, Makus said. Her jaw was

broken and her right arm and wrist were crushed

beyond complete repair, he said.

Her scalp is covered with staples and her legs have

deep, raw wounds that cannot be completely closed

because physicians fear trapping infection inside,

Makus said.

"This was not a dog bite, it was attempted

dismemberment," Makus said Tuesday. "There is no

way to describe the savagery and carnage."

Two King County sheriff's deputies fatally shot the

two pit bulls that attacked Le and seized two other pit bulls owned by the same man, Travis Cunningham

Sr., 36, of SeaTac.

King County Animal Care and Control is investigating the attack and will determine whether Cunningham

failed to follow a SeaTac ordinance requiring him to contain or muzzle his dogs, according to

spokeswoman Nancy McKenney.

Le — who emigrated from Vietnam about 40 years ago and once lived with Makus as a caretaker — was

attacked Monday morning in front of her SeaTac home after walking a child she cares for to the bus stop.

"She said she was walking back from the bus stop and the dogs were harassing her, running around her in

circles and growling," said Makus, who has spoken to Le about the attack. She told Makus she had not

seen the dogs before Monday. When she reached the home, the dogs got between her and the porch, he

said. Makus said she told the dogs to "go home" and they attacked.

"They pulled her down to the ground and she was kicking and screaming and trying to get away, but they

tag-teamed her," he said.

Cars drove by without stopping as she cried for help, he said she told him.

"She said the dogs were trying to rip her apart and

she thought she was going to die," Makus said.

According to the King County Sheriff's Office, two

deputies were in the SeaTac neighborhood when the

8:18 a.m. call for help came in from a neighbor who

tried to intervene with a pitchfork. Deputies arrived at

the home on South 150th Street within seconds of

each other, saw the dogs on top of Le and shot the

dogs, according to sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John

Urquhart.

Cunningham, the dogs' owner, could not be reached

for comment on Tuesday, but his 18-year-old son told

KING-TV that the dogs had never been aggressive

before.

"I just don't understand why they'd go and attack. They've never attacked anybody, even people who

came over and stuff," Travis Cunningham Jr. told the television station.

The attack came as some anti-pit-bull activists in Seattle and Spokane are proposing bans against the

breed.

Makus, 46, said he hopes charges are filed. If not, Le won't be eligible for victim-compensation funds.

Makus said Le fled war-torn North Vietnam 40 years ago and made her way to South Vietnam, where she

was captured by a person Le described as a "bad man."

According to Makus, who said Le spoke little about those years, the man brought her illegally into the

U.S., kept her captive and beat her before she was rescued by a friend of Makus' father.

She was taken in by the Makuses and became a member of their family, he said.

Makus' attorney father worked tirelessly to secure a green card for her, which finally came one week

before his death.

In the years since, Le obtained her citizenship and worked as a caretaker for a number of individuals. Le

never married nor had children of her own, Makus said.

For the past decade or so, he said, Le has worked as a caretaker and nanny for the SeaTac family of four

she lives with.

"She was an angel in our family and she is the go-to person for those kids," he said. "They're absolutely

heartbroken."

McKenney said King County has received 893 calls so far this year reporting either a dog bite or an

encounter with a vicious dog, but she said the statistics are not separated by breed.

The Seattle Animal Shelter, however, does keep statistics on bites by breed.

According to the shelter, pit bulls account for a disproportionate number of reported bites in Seattle. While

pit bulls make up only 4 percent of licensed dogs, they make up 22 percent of reported bites.

Makus said he is now an advocate of the breed ban.

"An attack like this is an attack on all of us. There is no room for this breed in our society, our city, our

county, our state. It's a matter of public safety."

Judge reserves ruling in pit bull attack case

BY KEYONNA SUMMERS FLORIDA TODAY

October 30, 2008 08:58 AM

VIERA - A Brevard County judge said he wants to take time to review all factors before ruling on the "very

tragic" case of a pit bull attack, in which the victim's leg had to be amputated.

"This is an 'everyone loses' situation," Judge A.B. Majeed said Wednesday. "There are a lot of factors to be

considered . . . and the last thing I want to do is make a hasty ruling."

Nearly a dozen people -- including animal control and Palm Bay police officers and two neighbors who helped

stop the mauling -- testified Wednesday during the trial of dog owner Anthony Phillips, 25, of Palm Bay.

Phillips said he shouldn't have to pay nearly $600 in fines for allegedly violating county ordinances regulating

attacks and the proper securing of animals because his cousin, Roger Lindee, 41, of Palm Bay, brought the

Sept. 5 attack on himself by barging into his home uninvited.

Phillips pleaded guilty to not vaccinating his 4-year-old pit bull, Kilo.

But Lindee said he never physically stepped into the home after finishing work on a car outside Phillips' home.

The 75-pound dog grabbed him by the leg and dragged him into the foyer after he knocked on the door, then

opened it slightly to call out Phillips' name, he said.

Kilo was fatally shot, police said, after the dog charged at officers who responded to calls for help.

Phillips disputes that his two other pit bulls participated in the mauling.

Animal Services representatives said Phillips and his girlfriend, Kamesha Bullock, tried to hide those dogs'

alleged role in the attack, and that both dogs, which were not vaccinated, died at a county animal shelter this

month from illnesses..

Majeed did not say when he expected to render his ruling.

A woman mauled by a couple of pit bulls on the West Side

Thursday is in stable condition and improving at Brooke

Army Medical Center.

Denise Rocha was attacked and her poodle was killed

while walking along South Brazos Street.

The stained sidewalk is an horrific reminder of the bloody

dog attack. Several neighbors rushing to save Rocha from

the two dogs.

"I just needed to do something. I wanted to help," said

neighbor Anthony Ortiz.

Ortiz showed News 4 the machete, steel bat, and BB gun he used to fight the vicious dogs off

Rocha and her poodle. Ortiz said Rocha was walking her poodle when the pit bulls ran out of a

gate that was open.

"It was like the dog was trying to rip pieces of meat off," Ortiz said. "I couldn't see her face

because the head was all bloody. I guess he was biting her head too."

A couple of neighbors who tried fighting the dogs off Rocha were also bitten and have minor

injuries.

Neighbors said they've always been afraid of the dogs.

"He has been warned before," Ortiz said about the owner of the dogs. "There has been some

complaints, and I think police reports on them and the dog."

Police shot and killed one of the dogs. The other dog is under quarantine and will remain there

for at least 10 days as this investigation continues.

Investigators said both pit bulls are getting tested for rabies.

News 4 spoke with the dogs' owner.

Dog Owner: "There's two sides to every story. And wait until you hear the other side of the story."

News 4's Demond Fernandez: "Yeah, we are just trying to get the other side."

Dog Owner: "I'm going to give you the other side, but it's got to be the proper time."

Pit Bull Attacks 4-Year-Old Boy

Attack Severs Artery In Boy's Leg

POSTED: 11:09 pm EDT August 22, 2008

UPDATED: 6:23 pm EDT August 23, 2008

A 4-year-old Oconee County boy was in serious condition at a local hospital

on Saturday after being attacked by a pit bull.

Paramedics said the dog was so aggressive that he even tried to bite the

rescue workers.

Cameron Salinas was attacked at a home on Union Crossing Road in a rural

part of the county on Friday, police said. He and his mother were visiting

April Stowe at the time.

Stowe saw the dog attack.

“I come outside, I seen what was going on," Stowe said. "I had a broom and a

mop. I broke the broom over his head. I couldn’t get him off.”

Stowe said she bought the dog, named Boss, and another dog for protection.

Boss weighed about 125 pounds, which was three times the size of the boy.

"His momma had him by both arms and the dog had him," Stowe said. "They

was pulling both ways with him."

Blood covered Stowe's porch, where both women struggled to get the boy to

safety. Salinas suffered bites to the thigh, backside and leg, where a major

artery was severed.

"Honestly, I thought the dog had done got him," Stowe said. "It scared me. I

thought, from what I seen, I thought he'd done lost too much blood. By the

time we got him in the house, he was white."

Deputies said they shot the dog eight times before killing it.

"You know, it had to be done," Stowe said. "I'd rather it had been him that

day instead of the baby."

Stowe said she’ll never own a large dog again. She even signed over her other

pit bull to authorities. Animal Control now has custody of the dog.

"We're going to have to evaluate her and see if she's going to be able to be

adopted out," said Jerry Zimmerman of Oconee County Animal Control. "If

not, we'll have to take other steps."

Stowe has been charged with having a dangerous dog and with a rabies

violation.

The fines total more than $1,200.

The dead pit bull is being tested to make sure it didn’t have rabies or bacteria

that might have been harmful to the boy.

CBS

CHICAGO (CBS) ! Two of three pit bulls were shot by police after mauling a

6-year-old boy Friday night in the West Side's Garfield Park neighborhood.

Authorities say Trayshawn Toliver is in serious but stable condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital,

and that he was bitten so severely that some of the bone in his leg was exposed.

Harrison District officers in the 500 block of North Lawndale Avenue witnessed three

dogs attacking the little boy about 7:50 p.m., according to police News Affairs Officer

JoAnn Taylor.

"I never seen anything like this in my life," said

Trayshawn's mother, Marla Thomas. "And I just

pray and hope that my son is going to be alright."

Police say Trayshawn had been playing with

friends in a vacant lot when the dogs in the yard

next door got through a storm-damaged fence and

got to the child.

"I jumped the fence, grabbed my little brother and I

was turning him to get away from the dog, and I

was punching the dog," said Demond Black. "I got

bit on my hand."

A neighbor and officers also came to Trayshawn's

aid.

"I heard the boy screaming, so I had to run back

over here," a witness told CBS 2's Kristyn

Hartman. "I didn't really do nothing because I

didn't want the dogs to attack me, so I had to flag

the police down."

Chicago Police Sgt. Adam Zelitzky said when they

tried to lift the child over the fence, two of the three

dogs were still clamped onto him.

Officers attempting to stop the pit bulls from

attacking the boy were forced to "destroy" two of

them, police said. One other pit bull escaped, but

was later in animal control's custody.

Witnesses stressed police did everything they

could to control the dogs, including using pepper

spray, before they resorted to using their firearms.

The owner of the dogs was being questioned by

police Friday night.

A local woman is fighting

for her life after being

mauled by her own dog.

Annette Williams, 615 W. North St., was reported to be in Methodist

Hospital after her pit bull turned on her and attacked the woman in her

fenced-in backyard Saturday morning.

Monday, details surrounding the cause of the attack were still unknown.

However, the events and injuries were coming to light. According to

Greensburg Police Chief Brian Heaton, the GPD received a 911 call at 6:21

a.m. regarding a woman screaming in the 600 block of West North Street.

Heaton said an officer canvassed the area but discovered nothing

suspicious nor did the officer hear anything out of the ordinary.

Just after 7, Laura Irvine was leaving the home of Joyce Helt, who lives

across the alley from Williams. As she walked to her car, Irvine heard a

faint call for help behind the brown privacy fence surrounding the backyard

of the house next door.

“I heard her cry for help. It was really faint. Then she called out ‘Joyce.’

She must have heard the (back door) shut and called for help. We couldn’t

hear her inside,” Irvine said.

The woman went to investigate, walking to the back of Williams’ yard

where the fence was lower.

“When I got near the fence, the dog jumped up at the fence, barking and

growling right in my face,” Irvine said.

When she stepped back from the fence and looked around the dog, she

could see the scene. Williams was laying in the middle of the yard. Red

blood stained green blades of grass, the side of the garage and the garage

door. Everything in the yard had been knocked over and Williams was

barely able to speak.

Irvine called 911 at 7:17 a.m., according to Heaton, and waited with

Williams. She tried to keep her calm, she said, as the dog barked, growled

and paced back and forth.

“I kept telling her help was on the way,” Irvine said. “Anytime she would yell

‘help’ or try to talk, the dog would run around her and bark at her.”

When officers arrived, the dog stood its ground. Heaton said Lt. Fred Huser

and Officer Jarrod McCalvin were unable to enter the backyard. With the

dog’s aggressive behavior and the woman’s condition, the officers acted

quickly, Heaton said, and drew their weapons, destroying the pit bull.

“They absolutely had no other option but to shoot the dog,” Heaton said.

“They both did a superb job. Unfortunately, they had to destroy it, but they

did what they had to do to help that person as quickly as possible, and

apparently just in time.”

With the dog dead, paramedics could finally access the yard to help

Williams. The viciousness of the attack gave her little time as she bled

profusely on the lawn. Williams was rushed to the hospital, Heaton said,

and later transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. According to

Irvine and Helt, Williams’ left arm was completely amputated and doctors

were waiting to see how the infection healed before determining if she

would lose her right arm as well. Helt said doctors had not determined if

the attack would be fatal.
