The theme of this conference is the in “Recent Advances in Sta�s�cs and Data Science for Sustainable Development”recogni�on of the advent of Sta�s�cs and Data Science. This conference plans to provide a forum for interac�on and knowledge sharing among academicians, data analysts, prac��oners, researchers and students in the domain of both Sta�s�cs and Data Science. It provides a pla�orm to present their research findings in the fron�er areas of sta�s�cs and data science. The topics covered in the conference are �mely and have great impact on data science, iden�fying important direc�ons for future research, promo�ng advanced sta�s�cal methods in big data science and facilita�ng future collabora�ons across disciplines and between theory and prac�ce. Cri�cal data for global, regional and na�onal development policy making are s�ll lacking. Making good use of big data will require collabora�on of various factors including researchers, data scien�sts and prac��oners. The target of hos�ng the conference is to make a rendezvous of sta�s�cal researchers to explore their remarkable contribu�on and journey through new vistas of the advances in Sta�s�cs and Data Science.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Utkal University (NAAC ‘A+’ accredited), Bhubaneswar is the 17th oldest University of India and the mother

University of the state of Odisha. Being established in 1943, it caters to the learning needs of about 1.5 crore people

belonging to nine districts of the state. It is a teaching-cum-research university having 27 full-fledged regular Post-

Graduate Departments and 17 Self-Financing programs within the campus.

The Utkal University is one among the ten best public funded state universi�es in the country. The University is

situated in the heart of the city. The University has completed its 75th year of excellence and celebra�ng its Pla�num

Jubilee. On this occasion, the department would like to host the ISPS, 2019 annual conference at Utkal University.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

The Post Graduate Department of Sta�s�cs is one of the oldest and leading departments of the Utkal University. The

Department of Sta�s�cs was established way back in 1958 and flourished under the guidance of late Prof. Bama

Charan Das and Late Dr. Chakradhar Mishra. Late Prof. Sadhu Charan Das, had the dis�nc�on and privilege of being

its first Head. Subsequently, Prof. J. Sarangi steered the Department to a new height. Prof. A.K.P.C. Swain, Late Prof.

I.S. Rao, Prof. L.N. Sahoo, Prof. G. Mishra, Prof. B.K. Pradhan & Prof. P.K. Tripathy were the dis�nguished faculty

primarily responsible for leading the Department to its present status. The Department in its 60-year span of

existence has enriched the society by producing very dis�nguished academicians, researchers, administrators,

entrepreneurs and so on and so forth.

Currently, the department has four regular faculty members, Prof. K. B. Panda, Dr. P. R. Dash, Dr. R. K. Sahoo and Dr.

P. K. Swain. The department now offers M.A./M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. courses in Sta�s�cs and also one self-financing

course viz. M.Tech.(IT). The thrust areas of the research are; Survey Sampling, Mul�variate Analysis, Econometrics,

Demography, Stochas�c Modelling, Opera�onal Research, Biosta�s�cs and Survival Analysis.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Bhubaneswar is the capital of the Indian state of Odisha. It is the centre of economic and cultural importance

in Eastern India. Historically, it was o�en depicted as Ekamra Kshetra. With the diverse ranges of heritage resources, it

showcases significant sacred cultural landscape components which have evolved with the support of available natural

resource base and cultural trigger. It is in the eastern coastal plains, along the axis of the Eastern Ghats mountains.

The city has an average al�tude of 45 m (148 �) above sea level. The city is bounded by the Daya River in the south

and the Kuakhai River in the east; the Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary and Nandankanan Zoo lie in the western and

northern parts of Bhubaneswar, respec�vely. Bhubaneswar is o�en referred to as ‘The Temple City of India’ and with

Puri and Konark, it forms a ‘Golden Triangle’, one of eastern India’s most visited des�na�ons. The city is well

connected to major parts of the country by air, rail and road. Winter season will be in force during the conference days

and temperature will vary between 150C to 250C.

ABOUT LOCATION / SIGHTSEEING

Eminent scholars belonging to the disciplines of Mathema�cal and Sta�s�cal Science laid the founda�on for the origin of

Indian Society for Theory of Probability and its Applica�ons (ISTPA) when they met in Sri Venkateshwara University in

1980. In the same year, the dra� cons�tu�on of the Society was drawn up during the delibera�on of the Conference held

at Indian Ins�tute of Technology (IIT), Bombay. Later, in 1981, it was registered in Bombay with its official address at the

Department of Mathema�cs, IIT, Bombay. The Society was renamed as Indian Society for Probability and Sta�s�cs (ISPS) in

1985. It has a�racted many researchers and scholars for enrolment as life members over the years and presently, the

strength has crossed 1000. The society takes every effort to enhance this number invi�ng young faculty, research scholars

and students of Sta�s�cs across the country. ISPS publishes the Journal and News Le�er annually.

Annual Conven�on/Conference/Workshop/Symposium of ISPS is being organized every year in one of the reputed

na�onal universi�es where the Department of Sta�s�cs exists. The events in every conference/conven�on include

memorial lectures, endowment lectures, invited talks, presenta�on of research papers for the award of Young Sta�s�cian

and presenta�on of contributory research papers. ISPS Life Time Achievement Award has been ins�tuted and is being

presented to an eminent personality in recogni�on of his/her scholarly contribu�ons to the development of Sta�s�cs.

ABOUT INDIAN SOCIETY FOR PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS (ISPS)

The organizers invite original and unpublished research papers from students/research scholars, academicians and industry

experts to present their work in the specialized areas of Sta�s�cs and Data science. The abstract of contributed papers

should be focused on the items such as objec�ve of the study, methodology, research findings, significance and scope of

the study. There will be a review on the abstracts by experts and selec�on of the paper is based on the recommenda�ons
