Postgraduate courses in nursing and midwifery provide students with the theoretical knowledge and critical skills to prepare them for advanced practice in clinical settings. Students will be able to align their career goals with a number of professional pathways.

WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

Specialisations available include clinical leadership, clinical teaching, aged care, primary health care or research studies. Opportunities are provided for students in their final sessions of study to synthesise and apply advanced nursing concepts through a capstone experience or research project relevant to their professional goals.

The aim of the Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) course is to provide graduates with eligibility to apply for registration in Australia as Registered Nurses.

WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

Graduation from the Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) course requires the successful completion of 17 units in the recommended schedule. Students commence this course by undertaking an accelerated introductory unit providing an overview of the knowledge and skills in fundamental nursing practice. Satisfactory completion of this unit enables progression to the other 16 core units.

Areas of study include: conceptualising nursing; primary health care in action; evidence based professional nursing practice; application of behavioural, social and biophysical sciences in nursing and health care. Special Requirements To be enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry), students must comply with NSW Ministry of Health Special Requirements for clinical practicum.

These include 1) A National Police Check or a criminal record clearance card/letter; international students require a police check (with English translation) from their own country or any country they have lived in, as well as one from Australia; 2) Meet NSW Ministry of Health verification requirements with regard to immunisation (a completed vaccination card with serology results); 3) Signed NSW Health Code of Conduct; 4) Signed Student Undertaking Placement/Declaration; 5) Completed Working with Children Check leading to the issuance of a clearance number under the category of volunteer. Students will need to: i) Access the Commission for Children and Young People website and complete an online application form to generate an application number. ii) Present an application number and identification to a NSW Motor Registry or Government Access Centre prior to issuance by mail of a Working with Children Check number. iii) Submit the letter with a valid Working with Children Check number to Student Central where the document is TRIMMED and recorded in Callista as a Special Requirement; and 6) A current approved first aid certificate. The aim of the Master of Child and Family Health (Karitane) is to provide Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives with theoretical knowledge and associated skills that prepare them to work autonomously and across a variety of clinical settings with children and families. Graduates will be able to apply advanced nursing concepts and analysis, and lead nursing practice to promote optimal health outcomes for children and families. This will involve among other things, design, implementation and evaluation of advanced clinical nursing care systems, and analysis and synthesis of nursing concepts leading to a basis for advanced nursing practice and the facilitation of change.

WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

Graduate Certificate: Child and Family Health: Professional Practice and Frameworks, Child and Family Health Practice: Supporting Growth and Development, Clinical Practice: Infant and Child Nutrition and Feeding, Healthy Families and Communities.

Graduate Diploma: The above 4 units plus Partnership in Practice, Perinatal Mental Health, Evidence Based Health Care, and one elective.

Master: The above 8 units plus Cultural and Social Diversity in Health Care and an elective. You will have the choice of completing one of these two-semester long units – capstone experience or a research project in health care OR completing both of these single semester units – Writing for Publication and Scholarship for Practice Change in Health Care.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Child and family health nurses may work in integrated service models in:

≥ primary settings, including home visiting and centre-based services

≥ secondary level service delivery including family care centres, sustained home visiting programs and outreach specialist services

≥ tertiary level service delivery including residential family care facilities.

Practice nurses who work with families with young children will find this qualification enhances their skills and knowledge, and promotes working in partnership with families to provide effective help.

Nurse Practitioners are expected to be clinical leaders who work autonomously from a sound evidence base, instigate diagnostic investigations, prescribe medication within an approved formulary, and refer judiciously.

WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

As a student of this degree you will undertake units of study that prepare you for the role of Nurse Practitioner in the specialist area of mental health. This incorporates areas of advanced health assessment, clinical leadership, evidence-based nursing, diagnostic skills, therapeutic management, psychopharmacology, evaluation and collaboration in care. The Graduate Diploma in Midwifery is designed for Registered Nurses who wish to pursue a career in midwifery – the art and science of providing holistic care to the woman and family throughout the childbearing process.

The course provides you with the opportunity to gain a recognised tertiary qualification and registration to practice midwifery. It is presented in conjunction with public hospitals in Sydney and is approved and recognised by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency/Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. There is one intake per year in January.

The course is offered by Western Sydney University School of Nursing and Midwifery – a national leader in nursing and midwifery education, research and scholarship in Australia. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Registered Midwives have the opportunity to work in a number of settings that include hospitals, in metropolitan, rural, and remote areas, as well as the community (including home). Midwives can be self-employed and work as privately practising midwives, be employed in public and private hospitals, and work in caseload midwifery programs and group midwifery practice. Their roles include antenatal, postnatal and birthing care, research, education, management and policy development.

Admission Requirements

1. Registered Nurse (currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Nursing and Midwifery).

2. A clinical placement is required to be secured in an approved maternity hospital. The student is responsible for the application and securing of a position as a midwifery student in one of the approved hospitals. Recruitment of student midwives occurs during June through a centralised online process available at www.health.nsw.gov.au/nursing/employment/Pages/MidStART.aspx. Applicants for clinical placements must be a Registered Nurse at the time of attending interview.

Attendance The course commences in January, the first two units are then offered by online mode only. At the commencement of the Autumn session there will be a one-week intensive workshop. Following this workshop, university attendance is 1 day per week on campus.

The Graduate Certificate in Acute and Critical Care Nursing course provides Registered Nurses with the theoretical knowledge and skills to engage in a safe and autonomous practice in the delivery of quality patient care in a range of acute clinical settings.

WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

This course provides units in leadership in clinical, quality and safety in health care plus applied clinical practice using simulation. One elective is part of the 40 credit points required.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Our graduates will be able to further develop clinical judgement skills in order to synthesise and apply advanced nursing concepts into their clinical practice. They also will be equipped to lead nursing in a range of clinical settings.

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for entry:

Registered Nurse (currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Nursing and Midwifery), or eligibility for same.

AND One year full-time equivalent work experience as a registered nurse within the last five years OR current and continuing employment as a registered nurse in an acute or critical care setting.

Applicants seeking admission on the basis of work experience must support their application with a statement for all work experience.

Applications from Australian and New Zealand citizens and holders of permanent resident visas must be made via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

This online course provides health professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to undertake sound applied clinical health research from the development of a research question through to publishing the results of the research.

Successful completion of the course provides an articulation pathway into higher level research qualifications offered at Western, such as the Master of Research.
