Lex Mills, who with his wife Karen, owns Waiuku New World, says he has seen first-hand the effects of the ‘le- gal high’ among some of the young people among his workforce, and this led him to look more closely into the availability of the products in the township. With around 160 employees, many of them young, Lex says he has heard of many cases of the damage caused to families by synthetic cannabis, and he has talked to some of the outlets in the area that stock it. He says the results were staggering. While some of the retailers were open about their sales of the product, oth- ers denied they sold it at all - despite young people in the township detail- ing where they had purchased it from. “The amount of this product being sold in a small township is, frankly, quite scary,” Lex said yesterday. “As a community, we need to ask ourselves whether we need it here.” Lex’s views are backed up by Waiuku Sergeant Simon Palmer, who says his staff have had disturbing reports of violence, suicidal tendencies and the break-up of family units - all linked to the use of synthetic canna- bis. Waikato District Health Board spokesperson Mary Anne Gill said recently that agencies involved had rec- ognised the risks posed by the drugs in smaller com- munities. “We’ve seen a number of issues at the Emergency Department in Waikato Hospital while our mental health staff in the Thames- Coromandel have recorded some disturbing side affects on users. Ms Gill said those side effects have included severe paranoia, visual and auditory hallucinations. “People coming down from the drug have experi- enced vomiting and a lack of control over their muscles or bodily functions. There has also been cases of the inability to speak, not eat and lack of sensation leading to one person being burnt under a shower! “In the Thames-Coromandel area, almost every sec- ond case our mental health staff have discussed over recent months has had some element of the use of syn- thetic drugs. It has been devastating for many of our young population and their families, in one particu- lar case from the Child and Adolescent team involved a teenager who went into three consecutive seizures, lasting a total of 21 minutes.” Sergeant Palmer says, while there are legal implica- tions with some of the drugs, and certainly with sales to minors, there is also a moral issue. “Having people and families come into my office in a distressed state due to the effects of taking these prod- ucts make you realise that it has huge effects on the people addicted to it. Legally, and morally something must be done to stop it. “The Police here certainly do not support the pur- chase, use or especially the supply of synthetic cannabis in any way shape or form,” he says. Sergeant Palmer acknowledges that some people do not view it as seriously as others, but believes the community as a whole should be more aware of the dangers posed. “I understand that people can take the view point that it is legal, therefore they are entitled to sell it or use it. That may be the case however one must look at the effects of its use, or likely effects, and start taking a much more responsible and mature approach to it.,” he said yesterday. “Legal yes, morally no. If you sell, or use anything that you know has the potential of bad consequences then I would like to see people, and businesses, be more proactive. “I have heard people that are selling it say that its le- gal, so they are doing nothing wrong. I think that this is just a cop out and those people need to stand up, and be counted. I would suggest taking a firm proac- tive viewpoint would be better than hiding behind and blaming others. “The Waiuku Police here support the ban of such substances, and shaming those businesses that are blatantly selling to their customers, some of which are underage!” he said. In some other communities throughout New Zea- land, shop owners who have chosen not to stock the products have displayed signs stating that they have made the choice to support their community by vol- untarily refusing to sell it. In other areas, families have picketed stores that sell synthetic cannabis, and have asked that the rest of the community boycott the stores. Lex Mills says the local community can take action if it chooses to, and has placed a full page ad in this edi- tion of the Post asking for the views of the community. Feedback forms can be dropped off at either Waiuku New World or the Post Newspaper. See page 11 for further details. One of the biggest employers in the local region has been joined by local police in demanding a solution to the sale of, and issues caused by, synthetic cannabis in Waiuku.

I hope that this is simply a bit of red tape that can be navigated quickly as this bunch do a fabulous job for our community and should be congratulated and sup-ported, not hampered.

I often stop with my chil-dren to admire the work the Mudlarks have done and to explain to my children that this work is done voluntarily and what a great thing that is.

So come on Waiuku, let’s get behind the Mudlarks and make a bit of noise to help them get this sorted out.

Around 22,700 pieces of feedback have been received via forms, emails and letters, as well as an additional 6,540 com-ments and posts gathered from social media and the Shape Auckland website on the draft Unitary Plan for Auckland.

Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse says council chose to release the plan as a draft ‘draft’ so Aucklanders could help shape the proposed rules in the plan before it goes out for notifi-cation. “The numbers clearly show our communities have embraced the opportunity to be involved at this early stage. Their views, comments and feedback will all be used to en-sure the plan we notify for formal consultation is the best plan possible,” said Penny Hulse.

The Auckland Unitary Plan is due to be notified later this year. This is when formal consultation will begin starting with formal submissions.

The main motivation however, was the chance to look after her own pub, after 16 years in the local hospitality industry, most recently as manager at Waiuku’s historic Kentish Hotel.

Working in the industry she enjoys, in a town in which she grew up, is providing fresh challenges and op-portunities for Barb.

Her parents, Bill and Marion Churchill, owned a number of businesses in the township over the years, including Church-ill’s Drapers, where Ray White Realty is situated now, as well as Wain-wright’s Ladieswear shop, and a milkbar in Queen Street known as the Ma-rina Lounge, which many of the locals remember fondly.

Barb’s links with the town extend to her broth-ers Peter and John, who own plumbing and join-ery businesses respec-tively, while Barb’s sister Raewyn and her husband own a motoring business in the township.

John has also been a member of the local volunteer fire brigade for many years.

Barb’s experience in the hospitality indus-try started out initially at the wholesale area of the Kentish Hotel, before later graduating to bar work on the pub’s pool competition nights.

Her first thoughts were that it was ‘all a bit scary’ with a room full of blokes, but she soon got to know the clientele and en-joyed the banter and good humour. After obtaining her duty manager’s licence, Barb’s experience grew and she moved to admin-istration, before going into full-time man-agement of the hotel under one of its own-

ers. While the Kentish is a large hotel, one of the attractions of the Wolf and Beaver was its more intimate atmosphere, a cosy envi-ronment which patrons often comment on.

However, the upstairs bar still caters for a good-sized crowd, while downstairs is a function room which is ideal for smaller birthday parties, private functions, semi-nars and business and sports meetings.

The room can cater for around 50 people and has its own televisions, private bar and deck area.

Shortly after taking over ownership of the Wolf and Beaver, Barb opened out the interior, removing some of the booths and

‘decluttering’ as she says to create a more spacious environment. The biggest changes though, for many patrons, has been the de-velopment of a new menu, which has retained the tra-ditional favourites, while offering some entirely new and flavoursome dishes.

Entrees include crumbed camembert at $10, while main meals range from $20 to $26 and include stuffed chicken breast, scotch fillet, fish of the day, and the win-ter staples of bangers and mash, lamb shanks or pork belly - a slow-roasted

succulent pork on a bed of kumara mash, seasonal veges and apple syrup.

The popular brunch menu, available from 9am on weekends, starts from as little as $6 for coffee and a fresh-baked muffin, or $8 for eggs on toast. Also on the menu is Eggs Benedict, steak, eggs and chips, a beef or cajun salad or the ‘Big Beaver Breakfast’.

Naturally, the bar offers a wide range of local and imported beers, as well as cock-tails, a revamped wine selection and teas and coffees.

“We’ve made a few changes, but our big-gest aim is to be a cosy, friendly little pub, with great food, great value, and providing an excellent atmosphere,” Barb says.

“Come and see us and check out our new menu and meet the new team!”

Above left: Barb Wilkinson has revamped the bar area and opened out some of the ma-hogany booths at the Wolf and Beaver. Above centre: Fiona Wilson and Hilary Jones - a

cheery smile and Beermaster certifi cation means there’s always a good ‘pint’ at the Wolf. Above right: the kitchen team of Evan Marvelly and Nikki Worthington have brought out a new winter menu - the beer-battered fi sh and chips is one of the lunchtime favourites,

while Eggs Benedict is top of the list for brunches and breakfasts.

Counties Shotokan Karate has 25 representatives from its Pukekohe and Waiuku dojos heading to Barcelona, Spain for the Karate World Championships on June 30, and fundraising for the trip of a lifetime has been a big

part of their lives.Among the Waiuku rep-

resentatives, joining James Hudson-Rooney, Andrew Frost and Jacob van Winden, is Grahame Newson, whose family started a new life in Waiuku after the devastation

Last Thursday the Waiuku College Clay Target Shooting Team travelled to Matamata Gun Club for the fourth sec-ondary school shoot of the year, part of their continuing preparation for the nationals later in the year.

Hosted by Matamata Col-lege, and attended by 153 shooters from around the Auckland and Waikato re-gions, the event only had three traps firing, so with 32 squads it turned into a long day. Foggy conditions early turned into a gloriously fine day, but despite almost perfect shooting weather most teams struggled, with low-scoring being the order of the day. Despite shoot-ing, for them, a poor score, the Waiuku team of Dean Sands, Daniel Gleeson, Lloyd

of the Christchurch earth-quakes. Grahame started karate when he was around nine years old, continuing at Shirley Boys High School in Christchurch for three years until the earthquake.

After seven months at Wai-uku College, Grahame won a scholarship to Pukekohe M.I.T to study motorsport, but says he was “itching to get back to karate after hav-ing a few months off.” He joined Counties Shotokan Karate under Sensei Ray Ir-ving of Pukekohe and Sensei Denise Walker of Waiuku.

Since then, he has com-peted in three regional tour-naments, finishing first and second in two of the events for Kumate and first in Team Kata in the third tourna-ment.

Grahame was invited by Sensei Ray Irving to the Bar-celona World Champion-ships, and fundraising be-came a major focus.

“We have been fundrais-ing as a team as well as for ourselves. Mum, (Julie Newson) and I worked hard for the last six months, with

sausage sizzles, meat raffles, and a surf board raffle - rain or shine, we have been rais-ing funds as well as training hard three nights a week and early morning runs in Puke-kohe,” Grahame says.

“I want to gain an expe-rience and see where New Zealand is ranked on the world stage,” he adds, “I’m so excited and looking for-ward to Barcelona just to be a part of this experience will be an honour and so amaz-ing.

“With karate being my dedicated passion for the last 10 or so years I don’t want to come home empty handed and hope to do my family and Counties Sho-tokan. Since training under Sensei Ray and Denise Walk-er I believe our team have the best chance possible to bring home to the area some medals and trophies.

“I also have to say thank you so much to those indi-viduals and organisations who have supported the team and myself to help us achieve the funds to go to Barcelona.”

With the Auckland Council elections only a few months away, expressions of interest are sought from people who have an interest in the affairs of local body politics and want to be part of a focussed, successful local team to contest the Local Board election.

The Franklin Local Board has 3 sub-divisions:• Waiuku - 2 seats• Pukekohe - 4 seats• Wairoa - 3 seatsIf you have a passion for your area, are keen to further the interests of the community and have the time to do so – then please reply in writing to:

468 Clarks Beach Road, Waiau Pa, Pukekohe

BatteryStockist

It was a grass fire that first raised the thought of a fire brigade in the minds of Waiau Pa and Districts resi-dents and was taken up by Noleen McLarin who was on the Franklin Council.

Further traction occurred in early 1988 when some lo-cals will remember the hor-ror of watching a house in Stevenson Road burn to the ground, while waiting for the Patumahoe Fire Brigade to arrive.

Soon afterwards con-cerned citizens got together for a meeting at the Clarks Beach Yacht Club and the Waiau Pa and Districts Vol-unteer Fire Brigade was born in May 1988.

Locals got behind the pro-ject and the brigade would particularly like to mention Sid and Pat Owen, Keith The-obold, Tom Boyd, Dig Pearce and their families who pro-vided huge on-going support and are honorary life mem-bers of the Fire Brigade.

With the help of Patuma-hoe Fire Brigade the first training night involved roll-ing out hoses at the Waiau Pa Domain with 27 volunteers signed up to train.

Having three regular fire fighters amongst the vol-unteers, was a big help and training progressed rap-idly, the regulars were a great source of second hand equipment.

The first appliance in 1988 was a rural fire fighting trail-er with a portable pump that was hard to start!

The first outing for the Commer Fire Appliance

was to a house fire in Torkar Road, which was fully alight following a stove fire - there was a good turnout as the firemen were doing first aid training at the Clarks Beach Yacht Club just down the road at the time of the call.

In the early days the alarm was raised using a Telephone Tree. The Fire Service would call the Camp Ground, which would call the top and bottom names on the volun-teer telephone list, each fire-man would then ring one further fire-man and the word would get around. This wasn’t hard as everyone only had a three digit phone number.

N o w a d a y s all volunteers carry a pager or listen out for the fire siren.

Meetings were held at the Yacht Club or the Camp Ground and the truck was kept in Sid Owen’s Farm Shed on Clarks Beach Road.

After training (which could be anywhere in the district), a few refreshments were shared on the side of the road and enjoyed by all.

Fundraising was a major part of the volunteer’s lives, with some sort of activity happening every month in-cluding golf and bowling tournaments, sausage siz-

In 1994 the money was raised to build the current two bay shed at Waiau Pa, with the training room add-ed behind in 1996.

This was an old office block removed from the Steel Mill with locals pitch-ing in to knock it into its cur-rent shape.

Over the years 48 Volun-teers have completed the three years of service re-quired to make the Honours

Board with two of the origi-nal members still answering fire calls.

The Waiau Pa Brigade has attended 984 local calls over the past 25 years, these have included house fires, farm buildings, scrub fires, car ac-cidents, first response medi-cal and special service calls.

The future of the Fire Brigade is strong and well supported now by the New Zealand Fire Service. The

brigade would like to thank the community for their support over the past 25 years, recently demonstrat-ed by the resounding com-munity response to a recent Garage Sale.

The brigade continues to upgrade its non-fire service equipment including a cur-rent fundraising goal which is for a further $40,000 for a new Operational Support Vehicle to replace its van.

zles, public dances including a vice versa and a Karaoke night, haymaking, raffles, demolishing houses, moving large objects such as piano’s, and preparing charity grant applications.

Volunteer families were also involved in making these events a success.

At first volunteers pro-vided their own uniforms,

consisting of farm gumboots and old overalls, finding a supply of second hand black helmets and silver jackets was a big step for-ward.

In 1994 the Council pro-vided funding for bright yel-low overalls, yel-low helmets and proper fire fight-ing gumboots…. for the first time everybody finally matched!

In 2000 a major fundraising ef-

fort provided structural fire fighting kit for all volunteers. With the change from Rural to New Zealand Fire Service full uniforms are now sup-plied to all fire fighters.

In 1990 the Commer Truck was changed for a manual gear box International Fire Appliance, followed by an ex Steel Mill International Truck in 1995.

The brigade’s first diesel appliance arrived in 1999 and the old Ex Steel Mill truck was then used for three weeks in January that year by the Council to pump water following the major Puke-kohe Flood.

In 2001 a small group of fire fighters led by Craig Panoho formed an incorpo-rated society and raised over $500,000 for a brand new-bright green “Fire Pa” Scania Truck which arrived in 2003, and is still the envy of many other Fire Stations.

Further support vehicles included a Pajero, Chev and finally the current van.

The Waiau PaBrigade has

attended 984 local calls over

the past 25 years, including house fi res, farm build-ings, scrub fi res,

car accidents, fi rst response medical

and special service calls.

Almost 1000 callouts for Waiau Pa Brigade since inception

The Waiau Pa Art group has a stellar line-up for its ‘Home-Brood’ arts festival kicking off this Friday night.

The festive exhibition marks the Winter Solstice, (June 21), and celebrates and recognises the diverse range of artistic talent hidden in the local community.

Paintings, sculpture, music, pottery, body-art, and cultural fire-dancing will be showcased throughout the weekend along with dem-onstrations of art-making processes.

As always, with every exhibition, the Waiau Pa Art Group have assisted a well deserving local organisa-tion by donating a portion of the proceeds. This year, by unanimous vote, the Waiau Pa Volunteer Fire Brigade will be the recipients of this donation.

Doors open on Friday evening at 6.30pm with offi-cial entertainment beginning at 7pm.

The celebrations include live music by Mark Rosieur and Aron Horton – pivotal

members of the very popular local band “Southern Jam”

There will also be a body-art model– painted by local member Cathy Davies, who was one of the outstandingly talented artists who painted the models for the Breast Cancer Calendar 2012.

Also in the line–up is a Fire-Dancing Performance (weather permitting).

The opening night entry fee is $5 per person – some refreshments provided - while entry for the rest of the weekend will be by gold

coin donation, with children free to enter. The exhibition is open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, with entry fees donated to the fire brigade.

There will also be a raffle with prizes including a Reiki Session with Sri Benham, pic-ture framing coupon by Elise Smith, a caricature Portrait by Helen Parsons and more; the raffle will be drawn on the Sunday at 4pm.

Waiuku Paper Plus is breaking out the balloons and cutting the cake in celebration of the brand marking its 30th birthday.

Store owners Yunus and Sophia Khan say it is an exciting time to be part of the brand and is asking locals to call in to the store for their party this Sat-urday when a large cake will be cut to share, free balloons will be available for children, and there will be plenty of prizes and giveaways.

“Since buying Waiuku Paper Plus in March last year, we’ve come to know so many people in the town, and we want to take this opportunity to say thank you. Call in and see us between 10am and 1pm on Saturday,” they say.

As a community, we can say NO

the sale of synthetic cannabisSynthetic cannabis is widely available in the Franklin region. It

doesn’t have to be. As a community, we can choose to shop at those outlets who make the choice not to stock these products. The Waikato District Health Board has already seen a number of issues at the Emergency Department in Waikato Hospital, while in the Thames- Coromandel area, almost every second case the mental health staff have discussed over recent months has had some element of the use of synthetic drugs.

Side effects can include severe paranoia, visual and auditory hallucinations.

There has also been cases of the inability to speak, not eat and lack of sensation leading to one person being burnt under a shower.

One teenager went into three consecutive seizures, lasting a total of 21 minutes.

What should we do? It’s up to you. Should we promote those retailers who refuse to

stock it in our region? Should we name the retailers who make it available to our young people and others?

It’s time to stand up. Tell us what you think. We CAN make a difference in our community.

Rare pocket watch shows its hand Inspired by the last In Black and White which featured the photograph of Queen Elizabeth

in Pukekohe in 1953, Waiuku’s Malcolm Freeman contacted the Post to tell of a treasured memento of the Queen’s Coronation.

In the 1950s Malcolm lived with his parents at Point Chevalier in Auckland. On his ninth birthday in 1953 they presented Malcolm with a Coronation pocket watch, which he has treasured ever since.

“In all those years, this watch has never needed any repairs, it has just kept working every time I have remembered to wind it up,” said Malcolm.

Last week he took his treasure to Waiuku’s long-time watchmaker Sid Richardson, who carefully took the back off the watch to reveal its original British movement. “It is remarkable that it is still working after 60 years, and is a testimony to the quality,” said Sid.

The watch has a colourful picture of the Queen flanked by flags of the Commonwealth. Instead of numerals around the face, the word Coronation is spelt. On the reverse side the Royal crest is engraved.

On checking the web, it appears the watch carries a brand of Ingersoll, although it is not shown anywhere on the watch. In 1921 the original company went bankrupt, but was bought by another watch company and the brand continued.

It certainly is a beautiful vintage watch.Malcolm is keen to find out a bit more information about the number of these watches

made and how many were sold in New Zealand. If you know of any information contact [email protected]

Birds in my backyardI love the fact that I have many native birds that frequent my property. The kereru (wood pigeon) are plentiful at present, along with the perhaps not so native

harrier hawk that does a customary glide past the spot where Ngaire throws the vegetable peelings each morning to the twittering piwakawaka (fantail) and the multiplying radiant tui. Each morning as I am having my shower I love to look out on the numerous tui feeding in the coastal banksia trees that surround our property.

Last week, however, I was surprised to see another bird in the banksia trees feeding on the nectar. It was one I certainly hadn’t seen there before. Upon checking with my resident bird expert Ngaire, and calling her to confirm my sighting I was pleasantly surprised to find the bird was a kaka.

It appears that at this time of year when normal food sources are depleted on predator-free off shore islands they move to the mainland to feed.

Sightings are becoming more common in the upper North Island north of a horizontal line approximately through Huntly to Te Aroha.

If you are keen to encourage kaka or other native birds in your garden, here’s what you can do:

1. Protect native trees in your neighbourhood or on your farm. Fence these off to exclude animals that may damage the trees or prevent natural regeneration of seeds (from cattle and sheep to deer and goats).

2. Plant native tree species for future food sources and nest sites. These include trees such as puriri, rimu, totara, kauri, kahikatea, kowhai, rewarewa, karo, etc. Any native tree that produces flowers and fruit will benefit kaka and other native birds such as kereru and tui.

3. Control pests including stoats, possums, rats and feral cats that are known to attack and destroy kaka eggs, chicks, and adult females on the nest, or are a threat to fledglings that are just learning to fly. All these pests are an equal threat to kaka, so any pest control programme preferably needs to target the full range.

Any sightings of kaka could be recorded at www.kakawatchnz.org, or contact [email protected]

Flax for the mill

Malcolm Freeman with his vintage Coronation watch in hand, in front of another pride and joy — his 1968 Dodge Dart GT convertible car. Inset - the Coronation pocket watch.

A heavy rain storm crossed West Franklin at 5pm on Sunday. Minor flooding in some residential areas resulted and included sur-face flooding and pondage on the Golf Club and other low lying areas. The storm water catchment area of Lions lake and the river es-tuary beside River Lane worked well to avert serious flooding which has occurred in previ-ous heavy rain events. The photo shows Lions Lake at its peak with water levels well over the footpath around the edge. The lights reflect-ing from the Z Service Station and Beaurepairs highlight one lonely duck who stayed to brave the downpour.

Heavy rain soaks Waiuku township

Robert (Bob) Perry, father of Peter Perry and Mable Cox, with a load of flax for the mill. Mable says that the photo (below) was taken before Bob was married and that was in 1910 and Peter recalls his father saying that it was taken in the Kohekohe area. “The men used to sleep in tents while they were cutting the flax,” said Mable, “but we cannot remember if he told us where he took the flax.”

If anyone can recall a flax mill in the Kohekohe area please contact [email protected] and let us know. If there are photos of a mill in the area we would love to publish them.

WAIUKU

A hypnotist show in Wai-uku next month is part of a mammoth fundraising ef-fort by 20 local youngsters as they prepare for a World Challenge expedition to Southeast Asia.

In January next year the group of 20 Waiuku College students will be travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia, however, this is no exotic holiday.

As part of the programme the students are challenged to raise as much of the $7,300 cost (each) of their expedition themselves; put together a detailed itinerary for the expedition; plan and run a short tramping expe-dition here in New Zealand, and manage the expedition’s funds when overseas.

The students also have to organise all transport, ac-commodation and cater-ing arrangements when overseas, undertake a five to seven day trek and par-ticipate in a community or environmental project using materials and resources paid for out of the funds they have raised.

Waiuku College believes that this is a meaningful and worthwhile experience and has joined forces with World Challenge to provide the group of young people with the chance to become po-tential leaders of the future.

By participating in the programme students will have the chance to develop a number of personal at-

cultural awareness and by being involved in the ad-

ministration of the event, the teenagers will also be de-veloping financial manage-ment skills.

The group have already been hard at work raising money to pay for the expedi-tion.

They took part in the Sand to Mud and ran a stall at the Family Day. They have also run a disco for pupils at Wai-uku Primary and numerous sausage sizzles.

On July 10 and 11 Dave Upfold the hypnotist will be performing at the College with all profits going to the World Challenge group.

Waiuku Policing report by Sergeant Simon Palmer

140 incidents in four weeks for local police

Barfoot & Thompson support womens health

Hi, I hope the last few weeks have been good and everybody is taking the time to ensure their house secu-rity is up to standard.

Outside sensor lights, win-dow latches, cutting away of unnecessary vegetation and deadbolts are all things that can deter a would be burglar.

Keep a list of serial num-bers, photograph your items, note make and model of items and any identifiable features.

Keep your car locked and any valuables out of view. Put them in the boot if need be.

Do not leave items in your car that will identify where you live, as if it’s broken into parked away from your home then it indicates that no one could be at your home.

Both Ross Crawford and Donovan Kawau have war-rants out for their arrest. It would pay to sort these out sooner rather than later.

Waiuku Police arrested four individuals the other week. Three had warrants for their arrest and two of these also had shoplifted from a couple of local shops.

A 32 year old female had her bail opposed and she spent a couple of weeks in prison waiting for her court case. A good result, as we ended up taking three to ‘Hotel Manukau’ for the night. We have had a num-

A women’s health seminar to be held at the Pukeoware Hall next month, (July 18), will also benefit Starship Hospital, with all proceeds being donated to the Trust.

Barfoot and Thompson are one of the major sponsors of Starship, and the Waiuku branch is sponsoring the women’s health seminar, which will feature international speaker Diana Burgess.

Diana is a naturopath, and is expected to deliver an informative

evening crammed full of important information for women of all ages.

Topics that will be covered on the night include the importance of hormonal balance, info on why hormones can make fat loss difficult, reproductive health including IVF, breast health and dietary advice, hormonal information for teens, and natural solutions for menopause and peri-menopause.

Other topics include solutions for painful, heavy or irregular cycles

and understanding the link between adrenal fatigue and PMS.

The event starts at the Pukeoware Hall at 7pm and runs to 9pm, with limited tickets available. Tickets are $10, and there will be no door sales, but can be purchased from Barfoot and Thompson, 16 Queen Street, Waiuku. Contact 235 0880 for further information.

There will be raffles available on the night to further assist with fund-raising for Starship.

ber of people stopped over the past few weeks that have never held a licence.

It’s not just a $400 fine, if you get caught again with-out a licence the vehicle you are driving ends up getting impounded. So please do the right thing and sit your driving test.

There have been a couple of accidents of late. People have not been driving to the conditions especially if it had been raining. Going around a corner at normal speed in good weather is totally different than if the road is wet. Adjust the man-ner of your driving to avoid it being a costly exercise.

Police visited an address on the coast this past week. Eight cannabis plants were found growing in the shed.

A number of firearms were located insecure as well as the ammunition that goes with them. This is a total breach of the regulations and will be taken further.

Police also located other drug paraphernalia, scales, pipes, deal bags, and con-tainers that had once had methamphetamine in them. The occupant was not at the address, but will be spoken to in due course.

Police arrested a 16 year old female for breaking into a vehicle on Riverside drive on the weekend. Some good work from members of the

public helped to locate her.To date there has been

around 140 reported inci-dents in the last four weeks. This does not include over the counter, phone queries, or traffic related tickets. So as you can see it has been pretty busy.

If you are suspended driv-ing due to excess demerits, then do not get caught after that. You will be arrested, ve-hicle impounded and it will end up costing you a lot of money.

Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-nz.org. Use this if you want your infor-mation to be anonymous. We always consider the in-formation that people give to us, and it can help in piecing together the jig saw.

That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku: Lorraine, Laura, Greg, Toby and Rod, thanks for all your help, we rely on your information to make our job easier, and Waiuku a safer place to live, play and work in.

50 years married

It was a celebratory day for family and friends on Saturday as Jimmy and Margaret Stewart enjoyed a party at Waiuku’s Wolf and Beaver to mark 50 years of marriage. The June 15 function, held in the Underground function rooms, was exactly to the day since June 15, 1963, when the couple tied the knot.

Counties Sport Fishing Club ran their an-nual Grunter Hunter gurnard-only fishing competition on Sunday June 9. There was a lot of interest in the build up to the compe-

tition which was open to all anglers. Club President Karl Sutton told me that the club was keen to promote these family

type events to dispel the myth that the club is for game fishermen only as well as to demonstrate to the community that has supported the club so well over the years that they have their interests at heart.

136 anglers took advantage of that, possibly encouraged by a $1000

first prize for the heaviest overall gurnard. The deci-sion was made to have a

kids section where the ten heaviest gurnard

were to get a prize and also be eligible for overall prizes.

That proved to be a popular decision with 15

junior anglers entered. With safety a top priority for the club,

the call to run the event was left to the last minute. Rain may be uncomfortable but the forecast for an easing wind overrode any creature comforts and the decision was made to go ahead. That call fell on my shoulders as the head of the Grunter Hunter committee and left me with a sleepless night!

The first boat was out in torrential rain at 3am, we joined them four hours later, but not before catching up with a gentleman who had made the trip from Whakatane, start-ing his unforgettable trip at 2am, he nearly turned back at Matata but you can’t keep a good man down and he pressed on. Reality set in at the Bombay Service Centre when he stopped for good kiwi breakfast of coffee and a pie and was soaked in the short run from the car.

The sea conditions were a little rocky but safe enough and the rain kept most fisher-men huddled in their cabins. Fortunately the turn of the tide saw the sea flatten out and the wind stop, resulting in perfect conditions.

While the fishing was difficult, the event

ran well with all boats returning safely to take advantage of the free barbeque, a feature of the CSFC family friendly events.

Wayne Farrow who travelled all the way from Whakatane got a great round of ap-plause when he was called up onstage to re-ceive a prize for his epic journey and another when he was announced as the overall win-ner! The name of his boat? Mission Accom-plished, he got that right. To top it off he won a raffle as well. I guess when your luck’s in, best you go fishing!

This event is now firmly established on the local fishing calendar and I look forward to getting out there next year to do it again. De-spite hard fishing on the day, this is the prime gurnard catching time with our boats and others getting great hauls in the days leading up to the event.

Counties Sport Fishing Club thank all who took part on the day, our tireless helpers and the owners and staff of DKM Fishing & Marine for sponsorship and assistance with ticket sales. Take care on the water & see you out there.

- Smudge.

ASK THE VET‘Canine Cough’ (formerly

know as ‘Kennel cough’ ) is a term used to describe conta-gious respiratory disease in dogs, and can be caused by one or more of a number of viruses or bacteria.

Affected dogs develop a harsh cough which may ac-cur in fits.

Dogs can also develop a nasal discharge, often ac-companied by sneezing. The disease varies in its sever-ity and lenght depending on what infectious agents are

involved, and also the age and general health of the dog affected.

Coughing can last up to three weeks. With more se-vere cases, particularly in very young or old dogs or dogs with underlying disease there is a risk of developing a serious pneumonia.

It is a common miscon-ception that only dogs which are taken to boarding ken-nels or shows are at risk of developing Canine cough.

In reality this is a very con-

tagoius disease and any dog which has even infrequent contact with other dogs or is walked along public roads or in parks where other dogs have been can pick it up.

Vaccines are available which provide protection against two of the more commom causes of Canine cough. It is a requirement of most boarding kennels and ‘daycare’ facilities that all dogs attending are vacci-nated against Canine cough.

Vaccination is recom-

Ever wondered what man’s best friend gets up to when your back’s turned - scratch-ing, barking or pining for your return? Now, there’s a new product available that can tell you all this and more.

Designed by Kiwis and made in New Zealand, Hey-rex is a health-monitoring tool that watches over your dog 24/7 – and the people behind it say it is teaching dog owners new tricks by helping address serious, life threatening problems that may otherwise go unnoticed.

No matter what time of day it is, Heyrex observes a dog’s behaviour, so dog own-ers feel reassured about their hounds, around-the-clock. This device is said to help identify many dog health conditions, including degen-erative joint disease, cardiac conditions and behavioural disorders.

A small monitor fits com-fortably on the dog’s col-lar and wirelessly sends the dog’s daily behaviour back to the Heyrex server. This infor-mation can then be accessed by the owner throughout the day, by logging on to the Heyrex website using a smartphone or computer.

As well as helping dedi-cated dog owners, Heyrex also allows vets to remotely monitor their patient’s treat-ment and behaviour within

Takanini woman Robin Olive pleaded guilty last week to ill-treating a dog in her care and was sentenced to 100 hours com-munity work and was disqualified from own-ing dogs for five years.

Late last year, an SPCA Inspector, acting on a tip-off, discovered ‘Lady’ – a white, fe-male, Whippet Bull Terrier crossbreed – tied upat Olive’s Takanini address. The dog was in poor body condition, with backbone, hips, and ribs clearly visible, and she was covered in sores.

The dog was seized and transported to SPCA Auckland for a veterinary examination and treatment. She weighed only 12.5kg and was suffering from generalised demodectic mange.

The Veterinarian concluded that the dog’s poor condition was due to inadequate feed-ing for many days, if not weeks. He also stat-ed that being significantly underweight and

suffering from mange would have caused the dog ongoing distress, and that any lay per-son should have realised the dog was under-weight and in need of veterinary treatment.

Veterinary records show the dog had been suffering from severe mange since July 2012 but Olive had not been able to afford proper treatment.

SPCA Auckland has also provided numer-ous food parcels and shelter for ‘Lady’ in the past. Olive admitted that she was struggling financiallyand found it difficult to provide her dog with medication and food.

“This case sends a clear signal to dog own-ers that being short of cash is no excuse – you are responsible for providing adequate food, vet treatment, and other necessities for your animals,” says Christine Kalin, CEO of SPCA Auckland. ‘Lady’ has now been forfeited to SPCA Auckland and will be put up for adop-tion as soon as possible.

Nathan Lawrence, CEO at Heyrex says: “After seven years of product develop-ment - Heyrex’s original in-ventor, David Gibson, sadly passed away in 2011 - we’re honoured to have finally been able to bring his vision to life.

“Unfortunately, in today’s fast paced world, a change in your dog’s behaviour can go unnoticed. That’s why we came up with Heyrex – it will keep a watchful eye on your dog at those times of the day you can’t be by its side.”

“We’re confident Heyrex will revolutionise the rela-tionship people have with their dogs, helping to build a closer bond between them.”

Did you know that most potential buyers form an opinion of the home they are visit-ing in the first 90 seconds? That 90 percent of people are incapable of imagining living in a home that has not been prepped?

There are some very specific techniques you can apply to neutralize your property so that it will please the majority of buyers, influ-ence the sale price, and reduce the length of time your home is on the market.

The first step in the “staging” of your home is to create new arrangements with your furniture. This will highlight the positive aspects of your living space, such as open areas, ease of circulation, size, light, and the main purpose of each room. It is important to create as much room as possible so that

visitors have an impression of space and dimension.

To do this, keep only the furniture necessary for daily life, such as the kitchen or dining room table, the sofa, chairs, and other deco-rative elements that are both simple and neutral. Walls, shelving units, and kitchen counters should be populated very spar-ingly. Art works, family photographs, and ornaments are all elements that could put potential buyers off. Personal items tend to distract visitors and prevent them from being able to imagine living in your home.

The idea is to depersonalize your rooms, to make them neutral by opting for a white wall instead of your beloved flow-ery wallpaper, for example, which not

everyone will like. Choose a restrained, elegant decor that will attract a young couple as much as a family.

Staging your home for a rapid sale

A restrained décor will please the majority of potential buyers.

The current Counties Power Cup holders Ardmore Marist remain comfortably at the top of the Coun-ties Power Club Rugby premiership table after edging out Waiuku 23-17.

Waiuku got the first try of the match which was set up from a line out 30m out and saw the back and forwards interact for lock Sam Cole to score in the corner. Ardmore Marist responded from broken play for a try to be score near the posts by red bearded Tyrone Lefau with the conversion hit the uprights. Waiuku added more points by slot-ting two penalties. Waiuku lost their line out ball, which Ardmore reacted quickly to and stretched the ball wide for Anthony Lavea to angle back in to score which was converted, ending the half at 12-11 in Ardmore Marists favour.

After the break the next twenty-five minutes was a real arm wrestle from both sides. Finally the points started to come with a penalty to Ardmore Marist.

Waiuku responded slotting their own penalty, again making it a one point game. Ardmore Marist extended their lead by kicking an-other penalty. Both sides were des-

perate to score with time running out, Waiuku tried to clear deep from their 22 and their miss-direct-ed kick was gathered by Ardmore Marist’s Tyrone Lefau who score the crucial try.

Waiuku had the final say with an-other penalty by Tom Halse which gave them a bonus point.

In the bottom of the table clash in the Counties Power profile match, Patumahoe picked up five points after beating Papakura 75-10. Vernon Comley crossed the line four times, John Vui twice and Kane Hancy, Rees Logan, Brad Muirson, Joshua Van Lieshout and Sean Rei-dy all scored a try each with Sean Reidy adding the extras with the boot.

For Papakura, Bradley Wade slot-ted a penalty to get them on the score board. The PGG Wrightson Player of the Day was Patumahoe’s vetran lock Alepino Olosoni.

As the business end approaches Karaka are on a bit of a role, having beaten Onewhero 34-23 on the hill.

They are the top bonus point scoring team in the competition having collected ten so far which could prove vital for a top four fin-ish.

It was a good free flowing game which showed the contrast in styles with Onewhero dominant in the forwards and Karaka showing their pace in the backs.

Onewhero’s Nathan Langsford scored the first try from good pres-sure play which he converted. Karaka replied when they raced down the left hand side from their own 22 and found Josh Rowlands in support to dive over for their first try.

Winger Tavite Gadeisuva rep-licated the move down the right hand side to score which was con-verted. Karaka’s halfback Danny Tusitala crossed the chalk when he was in support to finish off the play under the posts which was converted. Onewhero finished the half with a penalty making it 19-10 to Karaka.

In the second half, Onewhero opened with two penalties to Langsford closing the gap to three points. Karaka scored after a midfield break by their first-five Kalione Hala who passed to Row-lands to dot down for his second try. Onewhero’s Christopher Pongi barged over to score from some good forward play again making

it a three point difference. Karaka slotted a penalty and from the kick off scored from a slap down pass with Gadeisuva running 50 metres to score in the corner.

Onewhero were on strong at-tack for the last twenty minutes but Karaka held them out to finish the game.

Player of the day for Karaka was Tavite Gadeisuva and for One-whero their scrum was strong with Boof Henson awarded the Player of the Day for his leadership and per-formance.

Pukekohe needed to bounced back from last week and they did beating Manurewa in a high scor-ing match 44-31.

It was an entertaining match to watch where both teams delivered blows and show patches of good play.

Two tries each were traded in the first half with Pukekohe’s hooker Mark Price and centre Nigel Wat-son crossing the line early and Ma-nurewa’s Louis Maxwell and hooker Michael Lea dotting down for five pointers. The penalties went two-one in Pukekohe’s favour which gave them a 20-17 lead at half time.

Immediately from the kick off in

the second spell Lewis Moore dot-ted down for his first of two tries which now sees him the top try scorer on the PGG Wrightson Lead-er board. Pukekohe gained a bit of control when Willie Ione scored in the left hand corner. Manurewa re-plied with their own try when Louis Maxwell picked up his second of the day which was converted by the classy boot of Ahsee Tuala.

A kick through from Pukekohe’s Maama Vaipulu was collect by Lewis Moore who crossed for his second try and player of the day Nigel Watson saw him too collect his second try of the match under the post from set phase. Manurewa Josh Levi scored in the last minute of the game to close the score.

Pukekohe will be pleased with their scrums and the placement kicking of Joe Reynolds and Jared Page showed some solid form with the boot kicking six from seven.

For Manurewa their highlights were their open expansive game that a sevens team would have been proud of with impressive dangerous offloads coming from all angles.

Hooker Michael Lea and half-back Matt Talaese were solid.

With a resounding haka from the Waiuku College first XV, and after a blessing by local rugby stalwart Trish Chitty, the renovated Wai-uku Rugby Club scoreboard room was officially opened on Sunday by Counties leg-end Peter Clotworthy.

Dick Sheehan opened pro-ceedings in the rugby club, pointing out that the con-cept began at Christmas last year, when it was suggested a new window should be placed in the upstairs room.

“Brian Palmer thought we could make better use of it, and the idea of a histori-cal record of the club began from there.”

“Dave Grimmond donated the window, Clint Hornell supplied the steel beam that sits above it, Dave Ellery, Wax Saunderson and Lloyd Barriball put the window in, Nils McGee and Stumpy (Holmes) did some sort of a little deal on the carpet, so we got that at no cost to the club, John Andrews and fam-ily donated the handrail, and a number of others helped

with painting the room.“It’s been great to see peo-

ple asking what they can do for the club, rather than the other way around, as can happen,” Dick said.

Alan Dawson was then asked to introduce Peter, (between the two of them, they have played around 328 games for Counties), and he opened his speech by tell-ing the young players from the College that he himself began his rugby career at the local school, before embark-ing on a premier career at aged 19.

Of Peter Clotworthy, he said simply:

“When it comes to having a discussion about the best players at this club, essen-tially, you are just trying to work out who was second-best, because Peter was the best.”

Alan spoke of the impor-tance of loyalty to the club, and being a part of some-thing bigger than just having a game on a Saturday, finish-ing by saying “playing is the easy part, the club is made of

people who will give up their time and give something back.”

Peter Clotworthy recalled that he first came to Waiuku as a youngster with Auckland Roller Mills, and was billeted near to the Waiuku grounds. When, in later life, he trans-ferred to the town for work, he embarked on a career with the club, and the re-gion, that spanned over 100 matches for Counties.

“We had a good team, but we couldn’t quite win the championship,” he said, “and it’s good to see in recent years the club has picked up some titles.”

He draw a laugh when he said Alan had called him about the presentation and told him he was only ringing because Colin Meads and Len Brown weren’t available!

After Peter and his wife Glenda had unveiled a plaque commemorating the event, the large crowd of supporters and sponsors enjoyed an afternoon tea hosted by the Waiuku Rugby Club.

New regulations that come into force today (Tuesday), will give the public more reasons to object to the granting of an al-cohol licence. Objections must be for the greater good of the community and can be made if based on the broader business cri-teria licensees now have to meet.

Examples of the new criteria include the suitability of the applicant, a thorough business case, the locality of the licensed premises and purpose of it, such as club, off-licence, bar/restaurant.

All councils throughout the country will introduce the new regulations around li-censing criteria today as part of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act (SSAA). Since central government passed the new law in December 2012, Auckland Council has been preparing for the key changes to regu-lations, many of which come into effect

from 18 June 2013. “We currently have more than 3,500 li-

censed premises in Auckland. From tomor-row, we will have to consider whether an application for a new licence, or the renew-al of a current licence, fits the new criteria,” says Graham Bodman, Manager Licensing & Compliance Services.

“We need more information from owners now regarding their business hours, train-ing of their staff and how they will mitigate any risk to the community.”

Mr Bodman says that the overall aim of the SSAA is to reduce alcohol-related harm in the community.

There has been a concentrated effort by the alcohol licensing team at the council to keep a wide range of industry stakeholders and the community informed at each stage of the process.

next month / Employment Relations Consultants - Handling performance issues and getting it right

How confident are you that you can recover goods sold on credit - or their value - if your customer becomes insolvent? If you are still relying for security on retention of title clauses in your terms and conditions you could be left out of pocket. If you operate a business that sells on credit without formal loan or credit agreements you can still protect your assets, but you need to take steps beyond just retaining title in the goods until they are paid for. If you lease equipment to another business, you also need to protect yourself by taking steps beyond the lease agreement. Registration of your interests on the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR), operated by the ministry of Business, Innovation and Development is a key to asset protection.

Since 1999 the Personal Property Securities Act has significantly affected the way businesses protect property sold on credit or leased. The Act brought in a new system for registering and prioritising creditors’ interests in property. The old “retention of title” method under which you might have retained your interest in goods sold on monthly or longer credit was significantly changed. You can still retain title - legal ownership - of your goods until they are paid for, but to be sure of enforcing your interest in those goods ahead of your customer’s other creditors, you MUST register your interest in them.

You’ll need to describe your property sufficiently clearly so it can be identified. That is easy enough in the case for example of machinery with chassis numbers, or ear tagged cattle, but can be harder where you are selling building materials or inventory on credit. It’s worth taking the time to get it right, and we can help you with appropriate descriptions. Immediately on registration of your interest in the property on the PPSR, you gain priority for recovery of your assets or their worth over other later suppliers of credit.

The register is also valuable before you enter into a credit or lease arrangement with your customer, since it lets you check their credit worthiness and what other securities have been registered against their property, including any collateral you may have been offered. A key to watch for here is a registered interest in “all present and after acquired property.” This means what it says – an earlier creditor has been given security over all the property your customer owns and any property it acquires in future – potentially including your goods. You can still protect your specified goods – but you must register your security over them within 10 days of your customer taking possession. If you don’t you lose your priority interest.

It’s important to get your groundwork right: your terms of trade or lease agreement must include provisions allowing you to register the interest, make sure you know exactly who you are supplying – company, person or partnership, make sure you describe your goods accurately, and get the paperwork done promptly. The Register is only as good as the information you supply it. Getting set up is a very simple process and after a bit of training you can be set up to continue registering securities on your own. We have worked with many clients to set them up and train them on registering their securities. Once set up the costs are minimal, as in less than $2 per registration, and a registration can include multiple customers.

When should you use the PPSR?• When you’re lending property.• To check your customer’s creditworthiness.• To check whether collateral has already been offered to someone else as security.• To check whether financing statements registered against you are up-to-date.
