The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the National Museum of African American History and Culture are delighted to provide you with A Place for All People: Introducing the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a set of unique and highly informative posters. We know you’ll find creative ways to display them to engage and inspire your visitors and students and to help celebrate the historic opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The African American story is one characterized by pain and glory, power and civility, enslavement and freedom. It is a multi-disciplinary tribute to the best ideals of the American philosophy. A Place for All People evokes the power of oration and freedom stories, the brilliance of artistic achievement, and the soaring heights of cultural expression. In addition to profiling the long struggle to create the museum, the building’s architectural design and its prominent location on the National Mall, the poster exhibit is a survey of the African American community’s deep and lasting contributions to the American story.

This exhibitor handbook with instructions for displaying and promoting the posters and planning related programming is available through Google Drive here, along with high-resolution design files of the posters for printing and promotional resources.

In addition, we invite you to register as an official part of the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s Lift Every Voice Campaign here. By registering, your display of the poster exhibit and any related events will be featured on the museum’s website as part of a global directory of celebrations. The Campaign is an ideal way to tell the nation about the great work you are doing to celebrate African American History and Culture in your community. Displays and events can occur anytime within the inaugural year, now through December 2017.

We are so pleased to provide you with this FREE educational resource for your museum, library, school, or community organization. If you have any questions about the posters or how to present them, please contact SITES Project Director Ed Liskey at [email protected].

We look forward to hearing about your experiences with A Place for All People, which was supported by the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of the Provost.

Sincerely,

Myriam Springuel Director, SITES P.S. Once you’ve shared the posters, would you please take a moment to complete a quick survey, which will enable us to better serve you? You can find the link to the survey here and on the right side of the poster webpage.

PRINTING If you are printing your own copy of the poster exhibit, the high resolution design files are located on Google Drive. For printing, we recommend the following depending on your budget:

Print in full color to best convey the richness of the images, artifacts and the graphic design.

Use at least 80# cover weight paper to avoid wrinkles and tearing during handling.

Print to a finished size of about 26.5” x 18.5” to ensure best legibility of all poster text and captions.

MOUNTING & INSTALLATION The 20 posters in this exhibition are printed in full color on 80# cover weight Chorus Art silk paper. Each poster measures 26.5” x 18.5.” Your mounting options range from thumb-tacking them to your walls, to dry-mounting, to framing. The method you choose should reflect your anticipated use of the posters as well as your budget. However, for this poster exhibit, our recommended approach is to dry mount the posters for the most effective presentation. Your first step will be to flatten the posters to help make mounting and/or installation easier: unroll the posters, lay them flat, face-down on a clean surface with heavy books on them for at least 24 hours for best results. Dry Mounting Dry-mounting forms a permanent bond between graphic material (the posters) and a backing material—illustration board, Fome-cor, or other lightweight substrate. Dry-mounting services are available from commercial framing shops and craft suppliers. These suppliers also provide options for hanging dry-mounted posters. Framing Standard metal-section frames come in a variety of lengths. Do-it-yourself framing could cost as little as $20 each from a retail store, while custom-made frames in wood or enameled metal may cost up to $100 or more each. You may also frame dry-mounted posters without any glazing. Film Lamination You may wish to permanently protect the posters from the elements by laminating them, especially if they will be moved frequently. Nearly every city will have “laminating” listed in the yellow pages of its telephone book or online. In addition, many school systems may have laminators or receive special rates from contract companies.

Hanging Any frame that you choose will have suggested hanging hardware. You may also attach dry-mounted or laminated posters to your walls using double-sided or foam tape, escutcheon pins or thumb tacks, or a hanging wire affixed to the back of the posters. Installation Although you are free to hang the posters in the order that works best for your institution, we suggest the arrangement shown in the Poster Checklist and Elevations.

PROMOTIONAL RESOURCES This section of the handbook is designed to make your job in promoting the exhibition as easy as possible using strategies that have been effective for past SITES exhibitions. Sample materials have been produced including a press release, exhibition description, images with credits, and design templates for flyers and advertisements. The materials are available on Google Drive. As you use these publicity materials, please stay in touch so that we can provide you with the support and information you need to make your showing a great success. If you have any questions about any part of this section, or if you need additional press images, please contact Jennifer Schommer in SITES Public Affairs Office, at 202.633.3121 or [email protected]. Exhibition Credit Line and Smithsonian Logo All exhibition-related promotional materials must contain the exhibition credit line and Smithsonian logo:

A Place for All People: Introducing the National Museum of African American History and Culture is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Museum.

Examples of such materials include (but are not limited to) invitations, banners, signage, posters, public program brochures, postcards, and printed, videos, internet, and public service announcements. Smithsonian Logo Guidelines The Smithsonian logo is included with the promotional resources on Google Drive. The Smithsonian logo must be visually equivalent in size and at least the same size as that of your institution. Additional guidelines:

The Sunburst is made up of the sun and the circular sky background. Do not use the Sunburst without the accompanying logotype.

The Sunburst itself should never be black. The circular sky background may be printed in

Page 14: POSTER HANDBOOK AND USER GUIDE - New Hanover County · 2018. 12. 10. · SITES MRC 941 PO Box 37012 Washington DC 20013-7012 Telephone 202.633.3120 Website sites ... recommended approach

black.

When reversed out of a dark background and used without the “sky,” the sun will be white. If a light-colored stock or background is used, the black-and-white version must be used. If the background is dark, the white sun alone must be used.

When printing the black-and-white version of the logo on colored paper, the sun will be the color of the paper on which it is printed.

Publicity Ideas When planning your media relations strategy, remember that the SITES Public Affairs Office is a resource. We are happy to offer strategies that we have seen work at other venues or simply to brainstorm what types of promotions might work best in your region. Consider some of the following suggestions as you prepare your media campaign. Print and Broadcast Media A suggested press release, information about downloading digital images, and links to general background material are included in this handbook. In addition to sending the press release to your area newspapers, consider the following ideas:

Send the news release to the attention of the editor or reporter who has the most interest in this information.

Ask the editor of your daily newspaper to place an article or photographs in the Sunday photo magazine or supplemental section. These sections often reach more people than a weekly paper.

Contact the state Associated Press and United Press International wire services. Information of statewide interest can be telephoned in and will be carried in newspapers throughout the state. Wire service offices are generally located in the state capital and in large metropolitan areas.

Invite the media to cover special events and public programs. These are community news items that bring attention to your organization and the exhibition.

Radio and Television Radio and television stations will air public service announcements (PSAs), written or taped. If you have a small exhibition budget, send local stations a written 30-second media spot announcement. For example:

[Your Venue Name] invites you to a special exhibition celebrating the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. A Place for All People is on view [Dates]. The poster exhibit is brought to you courtesy of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the new museum.

Local Calendars of Events In addition to contacting your local newspaper editors and feature reporters, ask the Calendar editors to include a short item and photograph on the exhibition.

Area colleges and universities have newspapers that can print both calendar entries and articles on the exhibition.

Local chambers of commerce, visitors’ bureaus, and convention centers have monthly publications that list local community activities.

Non-traditional Media & Other Ideas

When you post information about the exhibition on your Website, provide a link to the SITES Website, www.sites.si.edu. If you provide us with your Website link, we’ll reciprocate and create a link to you on the exhibition itinerary page.

Consider doing an email blast to your members, if applicable, in the form of an e-flyer. This can be very short and feature an image from the exhibition, just to give members a sneak peek and get them interested in the exhibition.

Have your staff add a tagline to their email signatures to help get the word out.

If you have a Facebook page, post about the exhibition, any related events, and images of your visitors interacting with the exhibition. Add SITES as a friend on Facebook—@sitesExhibitions.

If you use Twitter, start following SITES—@sitesExhibits—and SITES will start following you. Tweet about installation, events, special school group visits, etc. Add to the conversation by including the hashtag: #nmaahc.

The journey to establish this museum began a century ago with a call for a national memorial to honor the contributions of African American Civil War veterans. After decades of efforts by private citizens, organizations and members of Congress, federal legislation was passed in 2003 to create the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Since
