New Blockhouse Booklet

In an effort to spread the history of Richland County, the Society has~ii!i;published a booklet on Richland County's Blockhouse. Pamela Henney researched, wrote the booklet on the blockhouse, and gave it to the Society to publish. Pam ........c_~..-IIIii;liiiiiiiis the granddaughter of Frank and Mary Jane Henney.

The booklet is complete with pictures. It will give you insight into why the blockhouse was built, what happened to it when the citizens decided it was no longer needed, and what became of it until localhistory preservation became of more interest. You will learn how the blockhouse was moved to it'spresent location. This was no small feat. Much labor and unexpected things happened along the way. Thebooklet is interesting and fascinating to read. It has been printed on linen type paper with a card stockcover, and is at by 5t in size. It is sold in local bookstores throughout the Mansfield area. If you do notfind it in your favorite bookstore, you can order it for $1.50 from the Society.

Our thanks go out to Pam for her efforts in making this booklet historically correct and for givingit to the Society to publish.

John Whitnah Leedy Buried So Far From His Roots

We recently received a letter with a picture of a tombstone from the Edmonton Branch of the Alberta

Genealogical Sociay concemrng an early Richland County citizen, John W. Leedy. While they were reading the

stones for a future book they discovered Mr. Leedy's grave and were kind enough to wnte to ask if anyone was

looking for this relative. The text on the stones reads "John W. Leedy, Thirteenth Govemor of Kansas, Born m

Richland County, Ohio - 1849, Died in Edmonton, Alberta - 1S35. Sincere in Purpose - Simple in Manner -

Rugged in Speech - His Public Services are Here. Commemorated bythe People of Kansas." The storewas found

during a cemetery readrng and they were thoughtful enough to send a picture of the stone to our group to see if

anyone was interested in the John Leedy familyA search of matenal at OGS shows that John W. Leedy was rndeed bom in Richland County, leaving the

area and settling in Kansas in 1880. After serving as Govemor in Kansas and prior to l9l0 he joined the gold rush

to Alaska, settling there, practicing law, and servng as Mayor. ln 1910, he moved to his ranch near White Court,

Alberta. He became a naturalized citizen of Canada and ran unsuccessfully for a s€t tn govemment there. He died

A Great Suryrise in Perrysvi{{e

The people gathered in great numbers each ladened with picnic stores for this special surprise. The farmers brought wheatcom. oats and other farm produce while their wives brought in great profusion the necessary articles for home comfort tokindly remember the Reverend Thomas. pastor of the Lutheran church in Perrysville. (Ohio) and his family. Early in theday the Rev. Thomas and his family had been spirited away while the great surprise was prepared The grandest gift wasto be a carriage with a splendid canopy top. Rev. Thomas had unknowingly chosen the carriage earlier when he wasinnocently taken by one of his brethren to the manufactory of Patterson & Creigh in Mansfield to look over the stock. sohis taste in carriages could be determined. When the officials at Paterson & Creigh learned who the carriage was for andhow it was to be paid they very generously gave the little beauty substantially at cost. A formal presentation was made byduring the picnic by Brother Leiter and it was promptly taken on a drive through the village with great glee It was a galaday long remembered in Perrysville. The following is a list of those who contributed to the Thomas carriage. Source:Mansfield Herald October 19. 1882

John Whitnah Leedy Buried So Far From His Roots

We recently received a letter with a picture of a tombstone from the Edmonton Branch of the AlbertaGenealogical Society concerning an early Richland County citizen, John W. Leedy. While they were reading thestones for a future book they discovered Mr. Leedy's grave and were kind enough to write to ask if anyone waslooking for this relative. The text on the stones reads "John W. Leedy, Thirteenth Governor of Kansas, Born inRichland County, Ohio - 1849, Died in Edmonton, Alberta - 1935. Sincere in Purpose - Simple in Manner Rugged in Speech - His Public Services are Here. Commemorated by the People ofKansas." The stone was foundduring a cemetery reading and they were thoughtful enough to send a picture ofthe stone to our group to see ifanyone was interested in the John Leedy family.

A search of material at OGS shows that John W Leedy was indeed born in Richland County, leaving thearea and settling in Kansas in 1880. After serving as Governor in Kansas and prior to 1910 he joined the gold rushto Alaska, settling there, practicing law, and serving as Mayor. In 1910, he moved to his ranch near White Court,Alberta. He became a naturalized citizen ofCanada and ran unsuccessfully for a seat in government there. He dieddestitute, March 24, 1935. Two weeks prior to his death the Kansas legislature appropriated $1,000 to pay hisfuneral expenses and the cost of erecting a monument to his memory. Later his family felt obliged to deny theKansas request that the famed ex-Governor be returned there for burial and buried him in Edmonton.

Our sincere thanks to the Edmonton Branch of the Genealogical Society for their interest and concern forthose researching a family member buried so far from home.
