What does a student think...Charles Karl should know a bit about postgraduate study, havingalready completed his MBA, he is now half way through hisDoctorate of Business Administration at Swinburne’s GraduateSchool of Management.

Charles says the course “has been a fantastic convergence of mypersonal, business and academic interests.” While studying, he hasset up his own business providing local traffic and weatherinformation that can be accessed through a mobile phone or theInternet.

When asked about his experience at Swinburne, Charlesresponded, “the direction the course has taken has been veryhelpful. All my professors have been very supportive and thecourse has certainly complemented my efforts to set up abusiness.”

One of the many benefits of postgraduate study at Swinburne isthe chance to network and share ideas in a supportiveenvironment away from the workplace. Charles has linked up withthree fellow students and set up an independent website that is aforum for publishing student working papers and researchmethods.

Ever dreamt of having a state-of-the-

art home like Bill Gates? Automatic

lights that gently turn on and off as you

enter and leave rooms or can be

activated remotely to make your home

look occupied. The ability to view video

footage of your home remotely via a PC

to determine what has triggered your

security alarm.

Brendan Rogers makes these hi-techdreams a reality. His education atSwinburne is a good example of the TAFEto PhD progression the University offers.

Brendan undertook a Tertiary OrientationProgram (TOP) in the TAFE area beforecompleting a degree in electrical andelectronic engineering, and a PhD andpost-doctoral research in artificialintelligence.

He is now a director of Clever Home PtyLtd, a company that designs innovativeautomated systems for the home. Thecompany integrates equipment fromdifferent manufacturers and developssoftware for each unique application.

“Using conventional light switches anduncoordinated appliances will soon beconsidered old-fashioned,” Brendan said.

“New homes are increasingly being fittedwith systems that integrate and networkthe control of lights, air-conditioning,watering, security, surveillance, communications, roller-shutters, blindsand entertainment. This enableshomeowners to enjoy greaterconvenience, safety, security andflexibility. Software can be changed at anytime and tailored to suit the client’sneeds,” he said.

present only fuelled his interest.

Around 12 months ago, John begansearching the Internet for acorrespondence course and discoveredSwinburne’s Graduate Certificate ofScience (Astronomy). He has sincecompleted the certificate and is nowenrolled in the Master of Science(Astronomy).

“My main aim for taking up the coursewas to increase my understanding ofastronomy,” he said.

John works as a project engineer at theEuro-Mediterranean Centre on InsularCoastal Dynamics (ICoD) at the Universityof Malta. He is responsible for theoperation and maintenance of all remotesensing equipment and the installation ofequipment at the ICoD offices.

He is currently working on a long-termproject called Seawatch that is supportedby ICoD. Peter AlsopMaster of Technology in Risk Management

Peter Alsop completed a Bachelor of

Engineering (Mechanical) at Swinburne

University in 1984, and decided to

pursue a career in risk management

during his third year of study.

He began his 15 year career in risk

management as a consultant and in 1993,

joined the Manningham City Council as its Risk

Manager. Peter is responsible for managing the

Council’s $1 million annual risk budget and

oversees the development and coordination of

the Council’s Risk Management Program.

“In today’s economic environment, businesses

are required to increase productivity and cost

effectiveness,” Peter said.

“Manningham City Council had a poor record in

risk management when I joined in 1993. The

five year risk management strategy I developed

in my first year as Risk Manager established

guidelines to reverse this trend.

“The risk management strategy has resulted in

significant performance improvements during

the last six years with the Council achieving a

sustained 70 percent reduction in the annual

WorkCover insurance premium rate between

1993 and 1999.

“Our risk management strategy covers

Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental

Management, Public Liability and Professional

Indemnity, Plant and Property, and Financial and

Business Interruption Exposures.

“We employ contracting service providers to

carry out certain aspects of our risk

management program such as specialist claims

management. This means the Corporate

Development team can implement the Council’s

wider risk management strategy.

Peter said he is reviewing the Council’s strategy

and management systems against its track

record in order to use resources more

productively. He is using his knowledge of

Manningham City Council to complete a Master

of Technology in Risk Management at

Swinburne.
