Returning to postgraduate study 10 years after graduating from her undergraduate degree was a big step for Karlie Gleeson. She rose to the challenge, successfully juggling her masters degree and full-time job leading the marketing team and strategy behind the $450 million redevelopment of Westfield Garden City. During her studies, Karlie discovered new ways of thinking, expanded her marketing network and grew her professional confidence. She has applied these learnings throughout her working life and further expanded her career opportunities. Shortly after graduating, Karlie was promoted to a senior marketing position with Westfield, Queensland. After a successful undergraduate experience, Sobi Slingsby extended her Griffith experience with a Master of Architecture. During her postgraduate study, she took out the top prize in a university competition for her proposed design for the casino at The Spit on the Gold Coast. Long term planning and climate change considerations were central to her design, which works like floating pods that are unaffected by rising sea levels and do not interfere with green space. Her design impressed the judging panel of esteemed professionals. Sobi won an architecture trip to France for her work, providing a unique international opportunity for professional development.

Laine Loxlea-Dannan had carved out a successful career as a singer and music teacher, but decided to push herself further by enrolling in a Master of Music Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium. ‘The science of voice has changed so much since I got my diploma from the Conservatorium back in the 80s. I wanted to go back and relearn my craft,’ she said. Despite a lifelong struggle with dyslexia, Laine managed to achieve a GPA of 7 in her masters, and hasn’t looked back. She’s now teaching jazz and musical theatre at the Queensland Conservatorium while completing a Doctor of Musical Arts.

After graduating from Griffith with a degree in product design, James Novak worked in the local industry on a range of high profile projects. But becoming a sessional lecturer at the Queensland College of Arts sparked his interest in further study. ‘I’ve always been a bit of a dreamer and wanted something more!’ James says. ‘After seeing an amazing lab full of 3D printers, I instantly quit my job and enrolled in an honours degree. It was a huge risk but sometimes you just need to back yourself.’ James made a splash with his Honours project, 3D printing the world’s first full-size bicycle frame in a single piece. He is now completing a PhD in the future of product design, focusing on the potential for 4D products to improve people’s health and wellbeing.
