Managers are facing increasingly complex challenges, having to contend with rapid changes stemming from the constant obsolescence of their products and with the need to quickly respond to their markets and opportunities. Project management is concerned with delivering a specified, discontinuous deliverable by a specific team representing the various specialist skills required, against planned performance, time and cost targets, and is therefore eminently suited to contend with the above reality. The reality is that project management is a scarce competency. Hence, it is listed as a scarce skill in South Africa. Our programme focuses on capacitating project managers with solutions that make business sense.

USB’s internationally accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management goes beyond project management know-how. It incorporates advanced management skills and strategic project management skills, enabling graduates of this programme to fill senior-level positions in organisations that require such expertise to perform optimally and compete globally.

Competent project managers who understand business are needed in all industry sectors, all over the world. This programme will help to get you there. It can also give you access to an MBA.

I decided to do the Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management at the University of Stellenbosch Business School as one of my colleagues advised me on the value for money he got from USB. I also did research on the accreditation of this PGD, which then convinced me to apply. I wanted to equip myself with crucial skills, tools and techniques to ensure that I will not only be an inspirational project manager but also a motivational one. I wanted to have the ability to successfully deliver a project within the project management parameters of time, cost and quality.

The programme format of six blocks of one week each over two years allowed me to continue working while studying. Another advantage was that I could immediately apply the theory in my work environment. Also, the work experience gained in between block weeks assisted me to get a better understanding of the theory covered during the block weeks and helped me to put things into perspective.

Project Management is all about teamwork.I soon realised that there is much more to project management than just delegating. I also learned a lot about myself, especially during the Emotional Intelligence module. It made me aware of the importance of teamwork and leadership within your work environment. I also came to the conclusion that Emotional Intelligence, Personal Leadership and Project Team Leadership can all be developed over time – they might even take an entire lifetime to master. In the project management context there is a much greater need for the Emotional Quotient than the Intellectual Quotient, because project management is all about team work and not about the individual.

A challenge for me at the beginning of my studies was to manage my work load and balance my studies and personal life. My solution was to quickly get into a routine and to study on a daily basis as opposed to leaving it right up to the week before a test, assignment or next block week.

After my two years of study I found that project management is not just industry specific. Instead, it is a general model or tool that can be used in any industry and on any project – big or small. It is also something that you can apply within you own personal life and not only at work as it will make you a better and more well-rounded individual.

I believe project management is an important skill to have in South Africa because to succeed in the management of projects, you need specialist skills and knowledge, and the ability to conduct yourself in a professional manner.

Information sessions

USB hosts various Information Sessions during the year. This is where you can obtain first-hand information on the programme and meet faculty members, alumni and support staff. See www.usb.ac.za/events for dates, venues, timeslots and booking details.

Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under ARPL. In order to be admitted to a Postgraduate Diploma at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant degree or National Diploma at NQF level 7. Candidates who wish to be admitted under the ARPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following: •Have at least an NQF 4 qualification. •Have at least TEN years of working experience after obtaining a school leaving certificate, of which at least

FIVE years should have been in a management or related professional position. •Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities

outside the work environment. •Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the

candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.

•Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.

•If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the abilities to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.

• A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.

• Note that ARPL candidates need to apply by 31 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Study visa requirements for international students

All residential students who are non-South African citizens and are studying at USB require a study visa. Prospective students should contact their nearest South African Foreign Mission (South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission), normally in their country of origin, to enquire about the requirements for study visas for South Africa. Applicants are required to present themselves in person so that biometric data may be captured. Students from West Africa can also contact USB’s representative for this region in Nigeria while students from East Africa can contact USB’s representative for this region in Kenya. (See contact details at the back of the brochure.) All international students can contact the USB International Office at [email protected] for assistance. All international students must hold a valid visa for their intended activity prior to entering South Africa.

Payment of programme fees

Foreign students need to pay a deposit of 50% of the annual programme fees by acceptance to the programme and the balance prior to, or upon, registration.

Additional information

Additional information for foreign students

There really is an enormous need for project management skills in the country. Excellent project management practices will have a positive impact on the South African economy as funds and time will be optimised. The return on investment will be maximised as all industries need project management to build infrastructure, implement changes, deliver services and improve quality. With the pressure on the global as well as national economy, funds are becoming scarcer but the need for infrastructure keeps on rising. This calls for the optimal use of funds and that is exactly where project management comes into effect to yield positive outcomes.

The level of networking that I was exposed to during my PGD in Project Management journey contributed to the unbelievable learning experience at USB and opened up a new world for me.

Project Management is needed to build

infrastructure, implement changes, deliver services

and improve quality.

Together, USB and its alumni create a powerful network that contribute to the common good of society. See www.usb.ac.za/alumni.

Notes on obtaining a study visa

• Obtaining a study visa from the South African authorities takes approximately 10 to 12 weeks from the date of application. However, some missions may process applications sooner. Sufficient time should be allowed for study visa applications to be processed.

• Your study visa application should include a copy of the letter offering a place on USB’s MBA (or other programme). This letter will be provided by USB’s Academic Administration once the application has been approved. A place on the programme must be confirmed before a study visa application can be considered by the South African Department of Home Affairs. Students should not proceed to Stellenbosch University or USB without a valid visa.

• Although applicants are expected to determine exactly what they require to apply for a study visa, they can expect to have to provide the following, among others: a police clearance certificate, proof of medical insurance recognised in South Africa, a radiological report, a medical certificate, proof of sufficient funds, and an admission letter from USB. Your nearest South African Foreign Mission will be able to advise in this regard. The onus falls on the student to make sure that he/she submits a complete application pack.

• All documents should be certified and translated into English before submission (in order not to delay the outcome of the application).

This programme will equip you with

project management skills that make business sense.
