Bond University offers three semesters a year, allowing you to complete your studies much earlier than at other universities. For instance, you may be able to complete a master’s degree between one year (3 semesters) and one year and four months (4 semesters) at Bond.

Bond’s accelerated study mode, combined with the flexibility of our cross-faculty subject offerings, gives you the opportunity to tailor your studies to suit your specific career goals or enhance your employability by gaining extra qualifications.

POSTGRADUATE STUDYBond University offers a range of higher degrees by coursework or research.

Admission to postgraduate coursework degrees generally requires an undergraduate qualification from a recognised institution. In some cases, however, extensive career experience in a relevant discipline may meet the entry criteria.

Doctoral studies are completed predominantly through research guided and supervised by specialist advisors. Each Faculty at Bond incorporates world-renowned research centres, headed by international authorities in their respective fields.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATECompleted in just four months (one semester), the graduate certificate comprises four subjects and serve as an ideal introduction to postgraduate study. This is particularly ideal for working professionals who cannot commit the time for a full master’s degree. Subjects completed can normally be credited towards a graduate diploma.

GRADUATE DIPLOMACompleted in just eight months (two semesters), the graduate diploma comprises eight subjects. This is an excellent option for those wishing to update their skills and qualifications in a specialist area and may be credited towards a full master’s degree*.

MASTER’S DEGREEMaster’s degrees are available in a wide range of disciplines in all faculties. If you hold a bachelor degree in a similar discipline, the master’s program generally comprises 12 subjects. Master’s programs can be undertaken by coursework only, a combination of coursework and research, or by research only.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)Higher Degrees by Research are completed predominantly through research, with candidates guided and supervised by specialist advisors. The PhD degree may be awarded for thesis only, or thesis and coursework or publication.

DOCTORATEDoctoral degrees are offered by Bond in the areas of legal science, laws, health sciences and physiotherapy.

Doctor of Medicine

"Through the help of the Student Opportunity Fund I was able to spend four weeks in Kirakira, a small community of around 4,000 people in the Solomon Islands. The experience made me appreciate our healthcare system a lot more, and also made me feel like I should be contributing a lot more to developing nations and their healthcare systems if I have the opportunity to do so."

NAVTEJ CHHIBBER

"The Student Opportunity Fund made it possible for me to travel to Washington D.C. and intern with the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, which is an international non-profit that seeks to eradicate child sexual abuse, exploitation and abduction. At times it was quite confronting, but it was also incredibly rewarding knowing that my work was contributing to a safer world for children."

DESCRIPTIONThe Medical Program^ is comprised of two sequential degrees – the Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMedSt) and the Doctor of Medicine (MD). All students selected for entry into the Medical Program^ will have to complete both the BMedSt and MD to be eligible for registration as a medical practitioner in any state or territory in Australia or New Zealand. Both degrees are awarded at the completion of Year 5.

The Medical Program^ is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes that a doctor requires to safely and effectively practise medicine in today’s complex healthcare environment.

The Medical Program^ is distinguished by its strong educational focus on case-based learning, evidence- based medicine and integrated clinical practice. Due to small class sizes, students learn in a highly personalised environment with state-of-the-art equipment.

Students benefit from a variety of teaching and learning systems, including case-based small group tutorials, problem-based learning, practical classes, clinical skills and laboratory training, self-directed learning, web-based and e-learning, interactive seminars and lectures. This contemporary approach to medical education ensures that learning relates directly to patient care and prepares graduates to assume a high level of responsibility.

The Medical Program^ is comprised of 14 semesters total over the two sequential degrees, or equivalent to 7 standard academic years in duration. However, with Bond’s three semesters-per-year timetable and intensive clinical training periods, the Medical Program^ is completed in just 4 years and 8 months, with graduates then eligible to apply for hospital internships.

well as clinical skills laboratories, simulation activities, community and clinical placements and a cultural immersion experience.

The program extensively uses a problem-based learning (PBL) approach, where each week introduces a clinical case around which the learning is integrated.

In the third year, students are located at the University Clinical Education and Research Centre at Robina Hospital. This enables students to have a full additional year immersed in the clinical environment and acts as an excellent transition from the campus based learning to the full immersion in the workplace in the MD component of the Medical Program^.

Year 12 semestersYear 1 commences with the molecular and cellular foundations of life and then guides learning through the first cycle of the body systems, arranged in generations. This cycle focuses on:• Introducing the structure and function of discrete

organs• Psychological basis of normal human behaviour• Sociological basis of the behaviours of populations

The foundations of an effective practitioner are explored through an introduction to conducting effective observations of people both healthy and ill. This involves the beginning of the development of the understanding of and the skills involved in effective interpersonal communication, group work and collaborative learning.

Collectively, integrated learning opportunities provide the foundations of:• Awareness of the roles of the doctor and healthcare

system• The impact of illness on the patient, their family

and society• The ethical basis of patient-centred healthcare

Year 1 also includes an Indigenous focus, with a cultural immersion experience occurring in Semester 2 as part of Bond’s innovative Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health curriculum.

Year 23 semestersYear 2 is framed around a second cycle through the body systems and focuses on:

• Relationships between structure and function, building complexity into an integrative systems focus

• Mechanisms of disease and infectious organisms• Normal compensatory mechanisms for restoring

normal function

Knowledge of psychosocial frameworks is deepened and broadened to explore the varied responses of individuals, groups, populations and cultures to disease as well as the exploration of psychosocial factors that contribute to disease and impact on patient healthcare, highlighting the complexities of health inequities.

The foundation knowledge and skills of a competent practitioner continue with a focus on history taking and physical examination of discrete systems. The ethical complexities of healthcare are then further explored inclusive of the legal framework for provision of healthcare and placements in healthcare settings will provide the context for introducing healthcare systems.

Year 33 semestersIn Year 3, the format of learning changes from facilitator guided, problem-based learning to clinician lead, case-based learning. Bond has developed the Bond Virtual Hospital © which is a virtual clinical learning environment where students work in small groups to diagnose and manage a range of clinical cases. At both the University campus and the Clinical Education and Research Centre, Bond has an accredited, advanced simulation facility that provides an authentic context to the procedural and clinical skills that students acquire in preparation for their clinical work in the final two years of the program.Over the course of the year, students complete clinical rotations which mirror where they will be placed in the final two years of the curriculum. The rotations include General Practice, Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Child Health, Women’s Health, Emergency and Critical Care. Students are also exposed to the clinical sciences of pathology and pharmacology and learn the principles of medical imaging.

The Centre for Research in Evidence-Based Practice is the leading research centre at Bond University. Research activity is focused on understanding the gaps between research evidence and its application to practice. In Year 3, students will have the opportunity to complete a course through this centre. They will learn from academics of international standing, and gain first-class skills in assessing evidence in medical practice. In addition, students complete research modules and written assessments that provide them with the foundation skills they need to complete their project requirements for the MD.

Please be aware that due to placement opportunities, the length of semesters may vary compared to the standard Bond academic calendar.

OUTCOMESStudents who complete the Bachelor of Medical Studies proceed directly into the Doctor of Medicine program.

DOCTOR OF MEDICINEYEARS 4 – 5 'THE CLINICAL YEARS'The Doctor of Medicine (MD) component is an Extended Master's level program and is undertaken through clinical rotations in hospital and community healthcare settings, as well as face-to-face teaching at timetabled education sessions. During this time, students undertake a research or professional project, or a capstone experience and prepare a portfolio of their work.

^The Medical Program is comprised of two sequential degrees – the Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMedSt) and the Doctor of Medicine (MD). All students selected for entry into the Medical Program will have to complete both the BMedSt and MD to be eligible for registration as a Medical practitioner in any state or territory in Australia or New Zealand. "The whole way through my master’s course, I worried about not knowing what I wanted to do when the course finished. I thought I had to choose one thing, when I really wanted to do everything. Ultimately, I learnt that the field of dietetics is so broad and varied that you don’t need to follow a ‘set route’ to carve out your career – you just need to follow your interests.

I learnt to listen to the advice of others and put it into action. I was aware that people with more experience than me have learnt

JOSH MORRISONMASTER OF SPORTS SCIENCE | ALUMNUS

“When Professor Peter Reaburn mentioned the internship opportunity available to our Master's of Sports Science cohort I was instantly intrigued and put my name forward for the placement. I was successfully chosen for the placement - the internship was for the Oceania Cup Tournament where Australia versed Samoa, Fiji, and New Zealand in rugby games.

During this placement I was given the opportunity to help with physiotherapy screenings, strapping, gym sessions, rehab runs, supplementation, and recovery - all of which ensure that the athletes are able to train and play at an optimal intensity and reduce the risk of injury. This experience was invaluable and it was great to be able to apply some of the learnings I had acquired in class to a group of professional athletes.

Once the tournament was over I was asked to join the Australian team in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport for their pre-World Champions training camp. My main responsibilities throughout the tour were to collect GPS data for the athletes and analyse the data to reduce the risk of injury.

Following the training camp at the AIS, I joined the team and made the long journey to Tbilisi, Georgia. This internship provided me with hands on experience and enabled me to apply the knowledge I learnt at Bond University. I was able to make industry connections and build strong relationships with professionals.”

I WAS ABLE TO MAKE INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS AND BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH PROFESSIONALS

Duration: Online PLT Program (part-time*) 2 semesters and 75 days of practical experienceStarting: January, May, September

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSBachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor qualification from an Australian Institution or equivalent.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, also known as Professional Legal Training (PLT), is the link between your law degree and becoming a practising lawyer. The PLT program is an alternative to undertaking a legaltraineeship for admission in Queensland. Our PLT program is a coursework degree that provides structured and supervised legal training, based on the Competency Standards for entry level lawyers developed by the admitting authorities and the Australasian Professional Legal Education Council (APLEC).

PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe PLT program has three components:

1. Practical Legal TrainingThe Practical Legal Training component is led by our PLT legal academics and offered every semester in each of our three different modes of delivery: on campus (full-time), online (full-time) or online (part-time). For on-campus students, this component is delivered in person and on campus. For online students it is delivered through intensive sessions on campus and learning online. Online students have the flexibility to complete their online learning from anywhere in Australia or overseas.

2. Practical ExperienceThis component requires that students complete 75 days of practical experience under the supervision of a practising lawyer in an approved law office or organisation in Australia. We have a dedicated and experienced career development professional to actively assist you in securing your work placement.

Practical experience can be undertaken in more than one law office or organisation and can be completed in part prior to or after the Practical Legal Training component. Credit for previous practical experience in approved supervised workplaces can be available for up to 40 days. Online part-time students can complete their work experience simultaneously with the Practical Legal Training component.

3. Continuing Practical TrainingThis component provides students with a further 75 hours of training and is completed online. It is undertaken concurrently with the Practical Experience component. It supports and draws on the knowledge and skills enhanced, honed and learned by students during their work in the Practical Legal Training and Practical Experience components. Students are provided with ongoing, one-on-one support from the PLT Director who acts as their mentor for this component.

PROFESSIONAL OUTCOMES Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice will enable you to apply for admission to legal practice in Australia (except South Australia or Northern Territory). You should contact the relevant admitting authority to ascertain the requirements for admission in your state or territory. Mutual recognition legislation also facilitates the process of practitioners admitted in one state seeking admission in other Australian jurisdictions.

For those seeking to specialise, the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice will provide you with a two subject credit into the Bond Master of Laws (LLM).

*The Online PLT program is not CRICOS registered and therefore may not

be available to student visa holders.

ASIA

I was fortunate to study at Osaka University. Japan is one of many culturally rich countries within Asia, and throws you right in the deep end of life. I mean this in the most positive way. Trekking out in the snowy mountains of Hokkaido, escaping to Seoul for the weekend, 12 hour bike trips and so much more to explore. It’s staggering, knowing just how much I could achieve in a single year. I met incredible people from all corners of the world, and together we explored Japan. This made for incredible memories. I took so much away from this experience.

SEBASTIAN THOMASBACHELOR OF ARTS / BACHELOR OF LAWS

“Living in the Netherlands and studying at Leiden University has been one of the most significant experiences of my life so far! Learning from leading experts at the Leiden Law School has greatly expanded my knowledge and understanding in areas such as privacy law, internet governance and European legal history. In addition, I have been learning Dutch, attended events at The Hague, and have travelled to Finland, Russia, Germany and Belgium. Moving to a new country alone is transformative; this experience has enabled me to step outside my comfort zone, to gain personal and professional growth and make new friendships with students from all over the world.”
