Study according to your needs

For some of our programmes, you can start your studies with an Individual Professional Award (IPA), which allows you to study up to three modules from the distance learning programmes that we offer. This enables you to focus on specific subject areas relevant to your professional interests without having to commit to a full programme. This makes IPAs a good option for those returning to study or trying out distance learning for the first time. If you then wish to, you can continue your studies with a Postgraduate Diploma or an MSc.

For IPA and programme registration there are multiple entry points throughout the year, and all qualifications are paid on a cost per module basis.

Supported distance learning

Successfully completing your distance learning programme will require you to show considerable self-motivation and dedication, but this does not mean that you are on your own. Support is available from our team of online academic tutors and student support staff, who are both knowledgeable in their field and experienced in supporting the needs of distance learning students. They are here to help you, and are contactable through the virtual learning environment.

Finance

As finance is a diverse and wide-ranging field, we offer three specialist pathways that enable students to select a path best suited to their skills and objectives.

MSc Finance (major: Economic Policy) PG Dip Economic Policy

Designed for postgraduates working in the field of economic policy in government, central banks, public organisations, international institutions and consultancy, these programmes will increase your understanding of the principles, applications and context underlying economic policy, focusing on the financial aspects of policy-making.

You will look at the principles and policy of macro- and microeconomics, international finance, the stabilisation policies of the IMF, and budgeting, accounting and taxation within the public sector. Graduates will emerge well prepared for senior positions in government, central banks, other public organisations, international institutions and consultancy.

MSc Finance (major: Financial Sector Management) PG Dip Financial Sector Management

Aimed at those looking to advance a career in management within banks and other financial firms, these courses enable you to deepen your understanding of the principles, applications and context underlying decision-making in financial sector management.

You will study modules in corporate finance, corporate governance, banking and capital markets, bank regulation and bank financial management. As a graduate you will be prepared for senior management positions in retail banking, investment banks, fund management, consultancy, central banks and international bodies.

MSc Finance (major: Quantitative Finance) PG Dip Quantitative Finance

This pathway has been created principally for postgraduates whose work in banks and other financial institutions requires knowledge of statistical (particularly econometric) and quantitative approaches to risk and derivatives. Modules focus on the principles, analysis and applications of econometrics, risk management, derivatives, and on the economics of information and uncertainty.

They are particularly suitable for those with a first degree in engineering, applied science, applied mathematics, economics, or similar subjects, but are also suitable for others with quantitative skills. Upon completing the programme, you will be suited to senior research and other positions in banking, fund management, consultancy, central banks and international bodies.

‘At the time of applying I was an Assistant Economist for the UK Government

Economic Service. Since starting my course, I have gained a promotion to Economic Adviser, and more recently,

Senior Economic Adviser. My professional success has been in no small part due

to the academic underpinning provided by my course.’

Ben Toogood, United Kingdom MSc Economic Policy

Finance and Financial Law

Both the MSc and the Postgraduate Diploma programmes combine financial principles and applications with current financial law and regulation.

MSc Finance and Financial Law PG Dip Finance and Financial Law

Designed to allow practitioners in finance to strengthen their knowledge of financial law, and those working in law to gain a greater knowledge of finance, this programme equips both groups with the tools to negotiate the wide-ranging changes in global financial markets and the legal and regulatory environment in which those markets operate.

Teaching takes an integrated approach to aspects of finance and law, with topics including risk management, regulation, mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and formation of companies, as well as the bank-client relationship, bond issues and loans. Modules relate to both national and international finance and will provide an insight into how financial and legal principles are applied in practice as well as in theory.

Graduates find that their specialist knowledge is in demand by international banks and investment firms, legal practices and regulatory institutions.

International Business Administration

This programme is designed to help you develop and fine-tune your international business skills in order to understand and respond to global business development opportunities.

MSc International Business Administration

As Asia and Africa emerge as leading global economic players, international businesses are increasingly looking for personnel with high quality management skills and regional knowledge. Our MSc in International Business Administration responds to this need.

You will study the interplay between the global and local factors that influence management decisions in business. As a graduate, you will be confidently positioned for a senior position in corporations, banks, financial services companies, business consultancies, regulatory authorities and international organisations.

PG Dip Policy Studies

This course is formulated for people working in policy-making and advisory capacities. Materials cover a range of policy issues and a variety of socioeconomic contexts, levels of government and regime types.

PG Dip Public Management

Finance/Finance and Financial Law Finance, economics, or another appropriate discipline.

International Business Administration/Public Policy and ManagementA social science discipline.

Individual Professional Awards An appropriate discipline depending on the modules you are interested in undertaking.

A mode of studying that works around you

Each module is studied in intensive eight-week sessions. You can only take one module at a time with each module typically available in at least two of the year’s sessions. This gives you the flexibility to plan how you study during the year, enabling you to fit your study in with your professional, family and personal commitments.

A Masters can be completed in two years and a Postgraduate Diploma in one year. Most students take, on average, three years to complete a Masters and two years to complete a Postgraduate Diploma.

The programme duration varies according to how quickly you want to progress. If your circumstances change at any stage during your studies, we are always available to advise you and help you rearrange your study workload.

MSc Agricultural Economics PG Dip Agricultural Economics PG Cert Agricultural Economics

Agriculture plays a critical role in poverty reduction by providing income and employment, food, raw materials and ecosystem services. However, its ability to do this is threatened by demands from rising populations, stagnant yields, and increasing pressures on natural resources. Improving sustainable agricultural productivity and secure and equitable access to food has become a major global challenge.

You will learn the essential tools required for theoretical and empirical economic analysis related to agricultural economics, while maintaining a focus on applications rather than abstract analysis. You will have the choice of studying modules on development, production, marketing and policy, and expand your knowledge of economic theory and resource allocation on national and international markets. You will also learn how to examine, synthesise and communicate economic literature and analysis.

Environmental Economics

MSc Environmental Economics PG Dip Environmental Economics PG Cert Environmental Economics

Environmental issues at local, national and global levels are among the foremost challenges facing society today. You will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of environmental and natural resource economics relevant to policy decisions and research. The programme is designed for those with a primary interest in environmental issues and public policy, with elective modules providing you with the opportunity to develop research skills and expertise in environmental management relevant to the needs of business and consultancy.

You will gain a critical understanding of the ways in which economic decisions, market forces and government policies affect the natural environment. You will also learn about the design and evaluation of environmental policy and the sustainable use of natural resources, as well as gain an in-depth understanding of the way environmental economics informs political decision-making.

Poverty Reduction: Policy and Practice

MSc Poverty Reduction PG Dip Poverty Reduction PG Cert Poverty Reduction

Within the Sustainable Development Goals, eradicating extreme poverty remains a central objective of international development efforts. This programme examines the complex nature of poverty, its causes, and the processes of poverty reduction. With a focus on rural areas which continue to be home to the majority of the world’s poorest people, modules draw on a range of disciplines relevant to poverty reduction, including economics, political economy, social development, management, natural resources management and law.

For their optional modules, students within this programme choose from one of three specialisms. These examine, respectively, policies to promote inclusive growth, the management of natural resources so as to benefit the poor, and ideas and approaches relating to managing organisations tasked with poverty reduction, within their individual cultural, political and technological contexts.

Environmental Management

MSc Environmental Management PG Dip Environmental Management PG Cert Environmental Management

This programme is perfect training for those concerned with the management of natural resources or the implementation of environmental policy at local and international level, in communities or in corporate and government organisations. You will gain an understanding of the principal environmental policy issues confronting managers in diverse geographical and cultural situations, and an awareness of the ethical and moral issues involved in the use of natural resources. You will also benefit from both an academic award and professional recognition from partaking in one study programme.

The MSc and PG Diploma are both recognised by the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), the professional body for environmental practitioners. Students who complete either of these qualifications are exempted from the training requirement for Associate Membership of IEMA (www.iema.net).

‘While the three years I spent studying and working simultaneously were extremely challenging, they were also immensely

rewarding. The content’s quality is excellent and the courses are designed

to be interesting, highly informative and applicable to real life issues.’

Sustainable Development

MSc Sustainable Development PG Dip Sustainable Development PG Cert Sustainable Development

The global community faces problems of poverty and profound environmental change that are interconnected in complex and dynamic ways. As the Sustainable Development Goals acknowledge, in an increasingly integrated world, any development agenda must be a global one with shared responsibilities for all countries. However, the idea of sustainable development, that underpins the post-2015 development agenda, is also a controversial concept that requires critical examination.

This programme provides a theoretical basis for understanding the evolution, meanings and use of the concept of sustainable development and it will help you to gain practical research experience. You will also acquire the skills needed to understand current environmental, development and sustainability issues and debates.

‘It was an amazing journey, full of knowledge, interaction and innovation.

I honestly felt the difference from the very first year of my studies. This specialised programme has substantially improved my substantive, research and analytical

skills in the workplace.’
