Specifications

Met One Instruments, Inc.

Met One’s Speciation Samplersare designed to comply andexceed EPA Speciationrequirements . Two models pro-vide a choice for compliancemonitoring: SASS is a 5 chan-nel sampling sytem andSUPER SASS is 8 channel, multiple event sampling system. The SASS conforms to originalEPA requirements and SUPERSASS adds benefits suggestedby state and local authorities.

Both models use concepts pio-neered by Met OneInstruments, such as the conta-mination free Canister, solarradiation shield, and modulardesign.

SASS and SUPER SASS notonly comply to EPA specifica-tions they exceed the specifica-tions, as proven in EPA andCalifornia Air Resources Boardfield studies.

SASS/SUPER SASS

SUPER SASSThis unit offers all the featuresof the SASS plus it hassequential programing to allow-multiple day operation. SUPERSASS will sample up to eightdays depending on the numberof sample channels used perday. SUPER SASS comesstandard with four independentvolumetric flow controllers, onefor each sampler group.

Testing and ExperienceThe SASS and SUPER SASSare based on designs thathave been field tested for eightyears with 3 years of testing inthe EPA program. This testinghas proven the concept andhelped to refine the design.

PortabilityDesigned for programs on themove, both units offer superiorflexibility and portability. SASSand SUPER SASS are com-posed of a portable pump box, tripod, sample head and con-troller, they are easy to carryand easy to install. Installationtakes less than one hour.

No Field ContaminationSample Canisters are loadedin the lab, with blank filter cas-settes. Sealed canisters areshipped to speciation fieldsites for deployment. Afterexposure the canisters aresealed for shipment to thelab. This approach circumventscontamination due to fieldhanding of the sample.

(4) Tandem Quartz for organicand elemental carbon, withbackup filter for artifact correc-tion, (5) Denuded carbon-impregnated filter for semi-volatile organic compounds.

Temperature ControlSASS incorporates a convec-tive solar radiation shield tomaintain the samples within5°C of ambient temperature.

Field and Lab Tested PM 2.5InletA Sharp Cut Cyclone (SCC)with a flow of 6.7 liters/min isintegrated in every samplingcanister to remove particleslarger than 2.5µm aerodynam-ic diameter. Test report avail-able upon request.

Canister ConfigurationsThe sample canister containsthe SCC all necessary compo-nents for excluding particlesabove 2.5 µm aerodynamicdiameter, for removing interfer-ing gases, and for collectingparticles including semi-volatile. The sampling canis-ters are designed to accom-modate denuders and one ortwo filters for sampling ofsemi-volatile species, and forcollection of gases such asnitric acid, ammonia, and

No Field MaintenanceThe SASS allows all criticalmaintenance to be performedin the lab. Other instrumentssuffer contamination of inlet, manifold and PM2.5 separatorbecause they must be servicedin the field. With the integratedcanister every element of thesampler that is contacted bythe sampled air stream iscleaned with each samplechange.

formic acid. For example, aTeflon Nylon filter pair can beoperated behind a nitric aciddenuder to give inorganic ionsand nitrate in the same cas-sette. Canisters can be usedas follows: (1) Teflon filter formass and trace metals, (2)Teflon or Quartz for inorganicions by ion chromatography,(3) Denuded Nylon or impreg-nated filter for nitrate,
