About 50 hours before the entire 185-milelength of the C&O Canal National Historicalclosed because of the shutdown of the fed-

eral government, more than 300 people gathered atGreat Falls Tavern to celebrate its beginnings 75 yearsearlier.

Director of the National Park Service John Jarviscalled Great Falls an “extraordinary place.”

Kevin Brandt, superintendent of the C&O CanalNational Historical Park, expressed gratitude to thevisionaries in 1938 who bought land from the C&OCanal Company and B&O Railroad that became theC&O National Historic Park.

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell said there is“nothing like” the work of volunteers and employ-ees for the park who connect us to our public lands.

“What you give tonight shouldn’t be the margin ofcritical function for the C&O Canal, it should be themargin of excellence for the C&O Canal,” said Jewell.

The 3rd Annual Park After Dark benefit coincidedwith the 75th Anniversary of the park.

The event, with a 300-person maximum guest list,was sold out, and raised more than $37,000 specifi-cally for the Canal Classroom’s education program.

The overall amount raised was still being calculatedwhen the U.S. Government shut down midnight onOct. 1.

Patrons were given photos of history 75 years ago,including one depicting this event:

“On Sept. 28, 1938, the United States Secretary ofthe Interior, Harold L. Ickes, handed a check over torepresentatives of the C&O Canal Company and theB&O Railroad to purchase the C&O Canal. This checkwas the first investment in what would become theC&O Canal National Historical Park almost 33 yearslater,” according to Park Service documents.

“We are all co-owners of this national treasure thatis often referred to as the nation’s backyard.”

The C&O Canal Trust is raising money to imple-ment its Canal Classrooms Program.

“We’re investing in youth as stewards of the park,”said Brandt.

The park service will hire retired school teachersto deliver curriculum-based education programs toPreK-12 students, supporting the increasing demandof school audiences using the park as outdoor class-rooms. “With over one million school children livingwithin a short ride of the park, the C&O Canal pro-vides perfect ‘Canal Classrooms’ to teach history andScience, Technology, Engineering and Mathematicscurricula,” according to the park service.

Award winners Saturday included Paul Chod andAndrew Chod of Minkoff Development Corporationwho were honored as recipients of the C&O CanalTrust’s William O. Douglas Award for Stewardship“for their stalwart support of the park through per-sonal and corporate financial contributions, the do-nation of supplies, the provision of in-kind services,and volunteering.”

Potomac’s St. Andrew’s EpiscopalSchool Gym was over-flowing withstudents, parents and friends cheer-

ing the Wayside staff team on as they heldtheir own against the acclaimed wheelchairbasketball team The Maryland Ravens. TheWayside staff, competing in wheelchairs forthe first time, immediatelyunderstood the necessity forupper-body strength, astrong core and toned bicepsand triceps. After a lot ofsweat, determination, laugh-ter and the realization that“it’s definitely harder than itlooks” the game ended in atie — 86 to 86 — not reallysuch a close game, since theteachers were spotted 70points at the beginning of thegame. The Special OlympicsMontgomery County JOYCheerleading Squad per-formed at half-time for thecrowd.

This Hoops SpectacularEvent kicked off the thirdannual Special Needs Awareness Program(SNAP) held Sept. 30 – Oct. 4 at WaysideElementary School in Potomac. During theweek, students engaged in experiences andactivities to help them understand the spe-cial needs of those with disabilities. Theyread age-appropriate books and watched

documentary films which led to sensitivitytraining lessons. They also had the oppor-

tunity to gain first-handknowledge of how it feels tohave a vision, communica-tion or motor disability withsimulation activities inwhich they replicated thedisability. The “Kids on theBlock Puppet Show” taughtchildren to appreciate dis-abilities and the differencesin others and themselves.

“This program started as aone day event, then two days— and now it’s a full week,”said Principal DonnaMichela. “Every student inthe school is involved andtalking with their parentsand siblings — and trulygaining an understanding of

what it’s like to live with a disability. Theweek is a joint effort among our staff, thePTSA, the special needs awareness commit-tee and our guidance counselor, NancyAverill. The Hoops Spectacular Event was

More than 200,000 people are hos-pitalized each year for compli-cations stemming from influenza

(“the flu”). These most commonly includemuscle inflammation, sinusitis and bronchi-tis. More serious complications, however,can lead to viral or bacterial pneumonia,inflammation of the heart muscle and sacand even disease of the central nervous sys-tem.

Last year’s virulent strain resulted inhigher than usual hospitalizations and thou-sands of deaths, many of them children. One

of these children, a 17-year-old Texas boy,died only six days after contracting the flu.Like many kids his age, he had not beenvaccinated. The Center for Disease Control(CDC) estimates that over a period of 30years, between 1976 and 2006, flu-associ-ated deaths ranged from a low of about3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people.

How does influenza kill? According to theCDC, influenza kills chiefly through its com-plications. Especially in the elderly, influ-enza can cause death through pneumoniaand through exacerbation of underlyingchronic conditions.

While these factors alone should beenough to send people running for the shot,the truth of the matter is that less than halfof the American population will get vacci-nated this year. Why the reluctance?

Time To Give Flu a Shotstrains into fertilized chicken eggs or cell-culturemediums to incubate them. The outcome of theseexperiments determines the make-up of the vaccine.Each vaccine is tailor-made anew each year to con-front the viral challenges of the season.

Once the live viruses are harvested from the eggs,they are “purified” by chemicals that kill them whilepreserving their key characteristics. The resultinginactivated vaccine constitutes an infinitesimallysmall amount of the original three viral strains, orless than one-fifteen millionths of a gram. The “fake”

viral capsule basicallymimics the flu. ExplainedSmith, “The flu shot is es-sentially a test run foryour body. It sees the fakecapsule and attacks it. So,when it actually encoun-ters the live virus it willnotice it and then it canfight it off.”

Smith advises that it isnever too early to get theshot. Each year, the for-mulation is added to andimproved. This year’s shotis composed of the threestrains, H1N1, H3N2 andB Strain. Although the fluvaccine has includedH1N1 for the past fewyears, the strain has mu-tated three different times

and only gets stronger with each passing year. “It isnever too early (or too late) to get the flu shot. It isthe best preventative thing we have developed so far,“ said Smith.

Flu seasons vary in their timing and predictability.They can begin early in the fall, usually peaking inJanuary and February, and can last late into thespring. Rite Aid expects to increase its number ofvaccinations this year 15-20 per cent to over 2,000shots. Three flu clinics are scheduled. Rite Aid alsooffers off-site vaccination services to companies. “Wewill bring all the supplies to you and bill the insur-ance company,” said Smith.

The CDC has recommended since 2010 that every-one over the age of six months receive the shot eachyear. Children 6 months through 8 years of age shouldget two doses the first year they are vaccinated.

Averill explained the students’ reaction to the simu-lation exercises: “They love to go to the stations andexperience how it feels to have a handicapping con-dition — but when they start to understand the enor-mity of always having that disability, they realizehow frustrating and difficult it is. The process buildsempathy, perspective and understanding what it’slike to put yourself in another’s shoes.”

Wayside School community-based teachersMaureen Casey and Gretchen Solender commented

on the Buddy Club at Wayside: “We have 73 studentswho volunteer with our students in the school com-munity-based program and the PEP program. Thekids really like being able to help their peers andlearn other methods of understanding and commu-nicating. Through this program, students really learnthe value of giving back and of commitment. Everychild takes a pledge to stick to their promise to vol-unteer.” The SNAP program was recognized in 2011by the MCCPTA Special Education Sub -Committeeas an Outstanding Program and was highly praisedin 2012 by Chrisandra Richardson, associate super-intendent of MCPS Special Education, who attendedthe simulations and remarked that “it is a testamentto the beliefs of your community about the impor-tance of not only accepting differences, but in un-derstanding and celebrating differences.”

Though the flu vac-cine is inactive, contain-ing no live influenza vi-rus, many people stillfear they will contractthe virus if they get theshot. This incorrect un-derstanding may stemfrom mistrust of vac-cines in general, specificreligious beliefs regard-ing the practice, or sim-ply a lack of clear infor-mation on the issue. Fluviruses are always mu-tating and while the vaccine cannot prevent all casesof flu, it is still the best defense against the disease.

Designed to protect against three different strainsof flu, the precise make-up of the influenza vaccineis determined each year by CDC experts based onpredictions about specific viral strains. The expertsanalyze the many forms of the disease from aroundthe globe and attempt to forecast which strains aremost likely to mutate and cause the most damage.“It is the CDC’ s best guess as to how the flu willmutate this year and what strains will be the stron-gest,” said Smith. Choosing among the many viralstrains means that some less threatening ones maygo uncovered. This, and the ever-mutating flustrains, explains why some people still get the flueven though they already received the shot.

Constantly in receipt of virus samples from aroundthe world, the CDC identifies and studies the mostvirulent strains. Scientists then inject parts of these

Shopping takes on new meaningwhen it benefits great causes —and that’s exactly what the Met-ropolitan Community Club Holi-

day Gift Show proceeds will do. This eighthannual Holiday Gift event will be held atthe Potomac Presbyterian Church at 10301River Road in Potomac, just a half milenorthwest of Potomac Village on Friday, Oct.11, from 5-8 p.m., and on Saturday, Oct.12, from 10-4 p.m.

Some of the Montgomery County chari-ties that will benefit from the club member’swork and dedication are the Women’sMicrofinance Initiative, Mobile MedicalCare, Inc., Manna Food Center, Team RiverRunner and A Wider Circle.

“Our group feels that there is a need forfood and furnishings for families, help forwomen who are seeking jobs and goodhealth care right here at home, so we tar-get charities in our community,” said SusanMagafen, co-chair of the Holiday Gift Show.

The vendors offer a multitude of shop-ping possibilities for holiday gifts — or just

for one’s own pleasure. The show will fea-ture jewelry, quilts, handcrafted note cards,scarves, children’s clothing, Christmas or-naments and tableware arts and crafts.Some of the vendors are: Stella & Dot,

Silpada, Button Jewelry, Venus Rising De-signs, Giovanna’s Fabric Art, Ibhana Cre-ations, American Classics Children’sClothes, and the Sweet Minerals MakeupCompany. A variety of foods will include

The Metropolitan Community Club ofMontgomery County was founded as theJunior Suburban Women’s Club in 1974under the umbrella of the General Federa-tion of Women’s Clubs. When most of themembers became 40 years old, they knewit was time to move on as members of aGeneral Club. However, the memberswanted to remain together and thus, in1988, they reincorporated their club asMCC. Today the club is still involved in con-tributing to the community in many ways.

Get Ready for Potomac DayT

he Potomac Day parade, spon-sored by the Potomac Chamber ofCommerce, is filled with clowns,marching bands and hoop-la. The

crowds line the curb along River and Fallsroads waiting to see their favorite Potomaccelebrities, local businesses, politicians, an-tique cars, glittering dancers and majorettes.Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops, church andschool groups and even the Tooth Fairy makean appearance in the parade.

This year, Potomac Day will take place onOct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This commu-nity “give-back” day provides the opportunityfor families, friends and neighbors to cel-ebrate how fortunate they are to live inPotomac. It’s also a chance to make newfriends, chat with local business owners and

learn more about what’s new aroundPotomac.

Following the parade, the Potomac Prom-enade parking lot will be loaded with activi-ties that youngsters and adults will love — arock wall where they can climb, inflatableslides for zooming down, ponies to ride, andducks, sheep and a miniature pony to cuddleand pet. Booths featuring political candi-dates, private school information, deliveredlobsters, “green” cars, as well as food fromlocal restaurants are packed into the lot. Theclassic car show will highlight vintage auto-mobiles with owners who share stories oftheir treasured vehicles. A “PerformanceStage” will feature the talent of local indi-viduals and groups.

The colors of autumn are allaround as pumpkins andsquash fill produce stands andleaves change from green to or-

ange, red and yellow before falling fromtheir branches.

Local designers and tastemakers are un-veiling home accents that bring the warmhues of the season into the home. Whetherusing pillows, throws or flowers, adding thecolors and textures of fall requires less ef-fort than one might expect.

“Emerald green, orange and turquoise arethree of the biggest color trends we’re see-ing,” said Marcus Browning of EuropeanCountry Living in Old Town Alexandria.“Throws and pillows are a given, but youcan also tie in traditional and modern ac-cessories with rugs, stained glass lamps withmodern or intricate designs.”

Small trays provide a canvas for highlight-ing color and adding functionality to aroom, says Marika Meyer of Marika MeyerInteriors in Bethesda, Md. “Color and pat-tern are in right now,” she said. “I just pur-chased the C. Wonder (http://www.cwonder.com) navy and white chev-ron tray for my home. It adds a punch ofcolor and freshness to a room. Preppy is

back in a big way, too, offering lots of pat-terns.”

Potomac, Md., based interior designerSharon Kleinman of Transitions by SharonKleinman uses flowers to add warmth to aroom. “I love mums,” she said. “I put themon my kitchen island and on the hearth inmy family room. I fill my yard and homewith them. They offer such great fall color.

I plant them in my flowerbeds and put themin pots on my front porch.”

For those who don’t want the mainte-nance of fresh flowers, Browning suggeststheir fabric counterpart. “Great silk flowersare nice to put in corners of side boards,”he said. “If you have a brown table, coloredcandle stick holders add a lot of great color.”

Pumpkins, which are ubiquitous this time

of year, are also one of Kleinman’s fallaccessories of choice. “I add them tothe display of mums on my porch,” shesaid. “I have a large ceramic pumpkin… that I put on my kitchen table sur-rounded by real, tiny pumpkins,gourds and squash. I use that center-piece from early October right throughNovember.”

David Mitchell of David Mitchell In-terior Design in Washington used asimilar style concept at a McLeanhome recently. “Wooden bowls are agreat way to bring in seasonal acces-sories,” said Mitchell. “Pottery Barnhas large, vintage, carved wood bowls

that are great for a sideboard or coffee table,and you can fill them with mini pumpkinsto add a dash of orange to a neutral space.”

Ann O’Shields, of The Nest Egg in Fairfax,said, “Hand-blown glass pumpkins are ex-tremely popular and a great way to add aclassic touch of fall in your home.”

Make use of fall foliage both inside andoutside of your home, advises O’Shields.“Wreaths for fall are abundant, featuringleaves and small pumpkins, and are a greatway to set the stage for fall décor,” she said.“Mantel decorating … is an easy way to cre-ate a focal point for fall in a room. Addleaves, fall candles, pumpkins and more toliven up a room.”

I went to visit my father the other day –at the cemetery – September 23rd was hisbirthday. He would have been 94. I had notrouble finding him; he was in his usualspot next to my mother of course, alsodeceased. My father often joked about hiscemetery plot: he wanted an aisle so if hehad to get up in the middle of the night fora glass of water, he wouldn’t disturb mymother. Presumably, when I stand over hisgrave and blather on about stuff – mostregularly about my life living with cancer, Iam not disturbing him. I really don’t knowfor sure since I receive very little feedback.It’s always quiet there, other than when I’mspeaking. But I wouldn’t expect anythingelse; after all, it’s a cemetery. Libraries arenoisy by comparison.

My father has been gone now nearlyseven years, since December 2006. (Mymother died two years later, nearly to theday.) Hardly has he ever been forgottenthough. I was an extremely lucky child. Ihad a great father who was devoted to hisfamily: me, my brother Richard and mymother, Ceil. There wasn’t anything hewouldn’t do for any of us. I miss him terri-bly, especially during baseball season. Heloved the Boston Red Sox and was fortu-nate, unlike some others his age (born in1919) to have actually witnessed a WorldSeries Championship in his lifetime (1918was the last Championship until 2004).There are New Englanders who duringtheir particular 86 years of life (the actuallength of the “Curse of the Bambino”) – orless, never celebrated a Championship; hedid in 2004. With the Red Sox back in theplayoffs this year for the first time in fouryears, my father’s memory looms large;(heck, he was a member of a “knotholegang,” attending games as a child duringthe Great Depression).

And though I readily admit I haven’t hadany two-way conversations with him at thecemetery, I have had – and continue tohave, although less frequently than in pre-vious years, the occasional dream where heappears or is present somehow. I don’trecall any real interactions of late: touch-ing, conversing, interacting, etc. In thepast, however, there have been a fewdreams where there was definite acknowl-edgment of one another, touching even,and a feeling that our connection was stillintact. I don’t know that I feel anything likethat when I visit him at the cemetery now.But given the fact that he’s buried a fewfeet below where I typically – and respect-fully, stand (off to the side, actually), hisphysical proximity to me there almosttrumps the cerebral-type dream interac-tions that we’ve shared since his death. Iwouldn’t want to have to choose betweenthe two. I like experiencing both. I hope hedoes as well.

My parents are resting peacefullyapproximately 20 minutes by car from myhouse. And though neither one is still alive,they both live on inside of me. I don’t thinkI could have survived having stage IV non-small lung cancer (a terminal diagnosis) foras long as I have without their wisdom andencouragement – in life and in death. I’mlucky still.

When the temperature starts todrop and leaves begin to turnred and orange, one can often

find chef Susan Limb meandering throughlocal farmers markets, sorting throughrough-textured, knotty sweet potatoes;tough, waxy butternut squash; and dusty,rose-colored apples.

“Some people think farmers markets arebare after summer, but a lot of markets arestill open and have really nice fall and win-ter squash, turnips and potatoes,” said Limb,co-owner of Praline Bakery & Bistro inBethesda. “And because they are so fresh,you don’t even have to do that much to themwhen you roast them. The make a hearty,flavorful dish that isn’t heavy.”

Limb and other local chefs and nutrition-ists say almost all fall vegetables can beroasted to yield delectable results. In fact,they prefer roasting over braising, sautéing,simmering or boiling because not only doesit create deeply rich flavors, it also helpsmaintain the vegetables’ nutritional value.

“When it comes to fall, I think aboutpumpkins, gourds, butternut squash andkale in deep autumnal colors like orangeand bright green that are packed with fiberand beta carotene,” said Lisa Goodson, alicensed nutritionist and nutrition instruc-tor at Marymount University in Arlington.“These nutrients are so important when itcomes to overall health. They can help withcholesterol, diabetes and heart disease.Steaming and boiling vegetables might

cause them to lose nutrients.”Chef Stephen P. Sands, of Culinaria Cook-

ing School in Vienna, transforms a laundrylist of fall bounty into a kicky vegetable sidedish. He tosses garlic, red and golden beets,russet potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips,turnips, shallots and carrots with olive oil,salt and pepper and roasts them for about45 minutes. The vegetables soften on theinside and caramelize on the outside.

“Roasting is better because the vegetablesretain most of their vitamins,” said Sands.“If you choose vegetables that are in sea-son, you don’t need a lot of spices becausethe vegetables are flavorful on their own.”

While there are plenty of roasted veg-etables on Executive Chef Eddie Ishaq’smenu at Wildfire, in Tysons Corner, he isparticularly proud to unveil a kale salad thisseason. “We started using it because it is sopopular now and it is a superfood in termsof nutritional value,” he said. “We chop itup and make it into salad.”

While kale salad might not sound as com-forting as roasted root vegetables, Ishaq’soffering is a shadowy green mountain un-der a blizzard of pumpkin seeds andParmesan cheese. He douses the salad witha lemon vinaigrette dressing that evens outthe bitter, earthy flavor of the kale.

“It is refreshing and you get the best ofboth worlds, says Ishaq. “With the lemonjuice, pumpkin seeds and Parmesan cheese,it’s creamy and also you get sweet, spicyand acidic flavors.

Ishaq says that even rustic turnips andparsnips can be transformed into tendercomfort food with very little fuss. “Keep itsimple and roast them with salt, pepper andbutter or olive oil,” he said. “You don’t wantto overpower the vegetables. When produceis fresh, local and in season, the taste standson its own.”

For her part, Arlington-based chef andinstructor Kristen Robinson, of the CulinarySchool at The Art Institutes of Washington,creates a salad that includes both the sa-vory and sweet flavors of fall. Her produce

of choice: beets and pears. She enlivens theflavors of the beets by using a salt roastingmethod. “You can line the bottom of a cakepan with a layer of salt. Add in any spicesyou like [such as] coriander seeds, fennelseeds, star anise or black peppercorns,” shesaid. “Nestle the beets into the salt and coverwith foil and roast.”

To finish the salad, Robinson tosses theroasted beets with diced pears, minced shal-lots, sliced chives, a spritz of lemon juiceand a coating of olive oil.

Robinson also roasts a variety of squashes,but often purées the mixture and tosses itwith pasta: “It’s a nice alternative to tomatosauces since tomatoes are not in seasonnow.”

Limb, a former White House pastry chef,extends her healthy fall fare to post-mealtreats. “Even for dessert there are a lot ofpears and baking apples such as honey crispor Granny Smith, which are in season now,she said. “The magnus pear is the sweetest,juiciest pear and you can poach it or bakeit. You don’t need sugar because it is sosweet. Just throw on a little bit of cinna-mon.”

Serves 8-101 head garlic, peeled and separated into cloves1 lb. red & golden beets, washed, peeled and

trimmed, and cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces1 lb. russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 1/2-

inch pieces1 lb. sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks1 lb. parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks1 lb. turnips, peeled and cut1 large onion or shallots, peeled and cut into

large cubes1-2 large carrots, washed, peeled and cut into

1-2 inches3 Tbsp. olive oil1 Tbsp. smoked paprika salt and pepper (to taste)1. Preheat the oven to 400 ˚F2. Wash and peel all the vegetables. Cut all the

vegetables (except the garlic) into 1-1 1/2-inchcubes and place into a large bowl. Toss the veggieswith olive oil, paprika, and salt and pepper.

3. Spread the vegetables in a roasting pan (donot crowd the pieces, use 2 if needed).

4. Roast in the center of the preheated oven until

tender and evenly browned, 45 to 50 minutes. Addthe garlic during the last 25 minutes of roasting.Taste and adjust the seasonings.

Salt Roasted Beets with diced pears, mincedshallots, sliced chives, lemon juice and olive oil

Salt roasting—line the bottom of a cake pan witha layer of salt and add in any spices you like ...coriander seeds, fennel seeds, star anise, black pep-percorns. Nestle the beets into the salt and coverwith foil and roast in a 350-degree oven until ten-der. Once the beets are cooked, remove from ovenand leave them covered until they cool to roomtemperature. Once cool you can use a paper towelto rub the skin of the beet off.

Cut salt-roasted beets into uniform size, toss ina bowl with diced pears, minced shallots, slicedchives and dress with a squeeze of lemon and ol-ive oil. *Since you salt-roasted the beets, noadditional salt should be needed in the salad.

1 red bell pepper, finely diced1 jalapeno, minced3 cloves garlic, minced6 c. vegetable broth4 c. tomato juice2 Tbsp. chili powder16 oz. Pink lentils1 c. cracked bulgur wheat1 lb. roasted mushrooms, any variety you likeGarnish suggestions: Cilantro leaves, crème

fraiche (or sour cream), cheese, additional roastedmushrooms

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cleanmushrooms by wiping with a damp paper towel orcloth. Cut into uniform sizes. Toss with salt pepperand a bit of olive oil and lay on a cookie sheet. Placein the oven until caramelized, time will vary withmushroom types so it is important that they are cutin similar sizes. If using more than one variety,roast each variety separately.

In a large saucepot, sauté all vegetables with asmall amount of olive oil. Be sure to season withsalt each time you add something new into the pot.Once vegetables are tender add in the chili pow-der and stir to coat all the vegetables. Add intomato juice and vegetables followed by pink len-tils. Once the lentils are tender add in the bulgurand simmer for 10 minutes. Add in roasted mush-rooms, taste and adjust seasoning.
