"And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." (Acts 2:47) Did you ever wonder what brings numerical church growth? No? Then maybe you haven't considered that there are also factors in play which may be preventing First UMC from bringing in the people God designed us to bring in. In a recent blog, Thom Rainer describes "Five Reasons Growth May Be More Difficult in Your Church". I thought they were interesting. 1. Church members are not being intentionally relational with those who are not in church. Church growth requires developing relationships. Most church members will not take that step. Many don't know how to take that step. 2. Many churches are stuck in the past. Sadly, too many church members are unwilling to make changes. Church, for them, is about their needs and their preferences. 3. Church members are not regularly inviting people to church. Many of the religiously affiliated will come to church if we invite them. But it's difficult for them to respond to an invitation if they never get one. 4. Many church members fail to act like Christians on social me-dia. Unbelievers are watching us on Facebook and Twitter. Social media is where the unchurched reside. And they constantly see our petty quarrels, our venomous politics, and our self-serving attitudes. Why would they be inclined to worship with Christians? 5. If they come to church, they only have a mediocre experience. If the re-ligiously unaffiliated do visit our churches and only see our holy huddles and our lukewarm greetings, most will not return. Yikes, Thom! Okay, Friends. How many of those factors can YOU do anything about? How about "All of the above"? 1. For starters, we've got to get out there and be relational with people. They're everywhere. 2. We've got to be about the business of serving God and serving Others over ourselves. 3. We've got to invite others to worship with us. Repeatedly. 4. We've got to be aware of the image of Christ we're presenting on Facebook and elsewhere. 5. We've got to be sure that when guests DO join us at First UMC, they are made to feel welcome and invited to return. Yikes, Tom! In Joy, Tom
