A method for salvaging a thermo- plastic substrate, which has been treated with a decorative or pro- tective coating, comprising treat- ing the discarded thermoplastic substrate in a coating removal so- lution consisting of by weight 40 to 95% water, 5 to 60% of an al- kaline material, and 0.01 to 20% of a surfactant at a temperature between 60 to 100°C with agita- tion and at a pH of 10 to 14 for a period of time sufficient to sub- s t an t i a l l y remove the coat ing from the discarded thermoplastic subs t ra te ; r ins ing the t r ea t ed thermoplastic substrate with a first aqueous rinse solution, fol- lowed by a dilute acidic aqueous rinse solution, and followed with a second aqueous rinse solution until the pH of the resulting run- off rinse solution is neutral; and

drying the resulting rinsed ther- moplastic substrate.
