  • Welcome to the Powderhorn Art Fair!

About The CoverThe theme art for the 2008 Powderhorn Art Fair was created by Powderhorn artist, Shari Albers. Shari, one of the found-ers of this art fair, designed the fairs graphics in 1992. I envisioned the park and art as co-existing, as they have for sixteen years. The animals and the environment put up with us for a few days, says Albers.

Mission StatementThe Powderhorn Art Fair is a regional fine arts and fine crafts fair developed to promote the uniqueness of the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood to the greater Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan area. Proceeds are used to support program-ming at Powderhorn Park.

Welcome . . .Each summer white tents dot the landscape around Powderhorn Park bring-ing individuals from all over the country together to enjoy an abundance of creativity and skill that flows through the artists participating in the Powder-horn Art Fair. The park, the lake, the surrounding community, and event coor-dinators and volunteers make this a fantastic event; however, the real beauty of the Powderhorn Art Fair is that the events impact is felt throughout the year and not just on event days. Proceeds from the Art Fair help fund park programs such as theatre arts, computer lab, teen center, music recording studio, the pottery studio and team sports - giving neighborhood residents of all ages a safe environment in which to play, learn and grow.

As you enjoy this years Fair, please take a moment to reflect on your impor-tance to Powderhorn Park and our communitiy. We appreciate your taking time to experience the uniqueness of the Powderhorn Park neighborhood and hope you will visit us regularly.

This event is brought to you by . . .A partnership between the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood (PPNA) and the Min-neapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB). Their staffs are supported by a wide variety of community volunteers, event organizers, and staff.

  • 3HELP NOW!We all expect blood to be there for us, but barely a fraction of those who can give do. Yet sooner or later, virtually all of us will face a time of great vulnerability in which we will need blood. And that time is all too often unexpected.

From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service, of generous, strong and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. The honor, spirit and resources of the American people comes forth with neighbors helping neighbors in need - during earthquakes, floods, fires, storms - and also for the deeply personal and often quiet disasters that require a gift of blood.

  • Best of Show LOU HIIPaper - Not In 2008 Show

Lou Hii is a paper-cut artist who has won many awards in major fine art festivals. His subject matter originated from the traditional Asian themes in his early works. As time goes by and with feedback from his customers, he slowly changes his style in designs to suit the general public in the last few years.

He creates his designs through a series of sketches and the design has to be continuous pieces with negative and positive spaces in mind. The finished designs are then hand cut with an X-ACTO knife and special tools on black paper. For the multi-color designs, the design is cut on white rice paper and then hand colored with liquid watercolor. Some of Lous unique designs are collaged and glued with different color papers on background to form the com-plete artwork.

His latest paper-cut designs incorporate different materials such as paper, fiber, metal, wood and fabric paint, and are collaged into contemporary designs.

Second Place PATRICK TURNERMixed Media, Booth 166

Collage artist Patrick Turner has been cre-ating collages and exhibiting at art festi-vals throughout the United States for the last 20 years. Born 1953, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Turner received his B.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1975. His interest in collage began out of curiosity and he has continued to excel in many directions with his art. He now has many collectors both private and corpo-rate throughout the United States that have acquired his works. His works can be seen at Peltz Gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and at his web site,

Local artist Tammy Ortegon lives in South Minneapolis with her husband and her two sons. She is also a local business owner running the Color Wheel Salon and Gallery, which features Tammys art-work along with that of other local artists.

Tammy has exhibited her paintings throughout the Twin Cities in galleries, cultural centers and community events. In 2004, she was commissioned to cre-ate two murals in South Minneapolis with local youth. She was awarded the Spirit of Powderhorn Award at the Powderhorn Art Fair in 2001 and 2004.

Tammys folk art style is alive with vibrant, textured color. The peo-ples of the world and their stories inspire her work. Her vision is to offer a unique perspective of how we see each other, and start a dialogue among people that leads to communication, information and understanding, as well as working with others to create social

2007 Art Fair AwardsEach year five main awards and ten invitational awards are given at the Powderhorn Art Fair. The top five awards include First Place (Best of Show), Second Place, Third Place, Honorable Mention, and Spirit of Powderhorn. A panel of three judges of varying art backgrounds (one of whom is a Powderhorn Park Neighborhood resident) is chosen by the Art Fair Committee to select the top four awards. One judge is chosen by the Community Showcase Committee to select the Spirit of Powderhorn award winner. This award is given to the artist whose work best repre-sents the unique qualities found in the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood.

She started as a jeweler and still creates contemporary sterling silver jewelry. Seventeen years ago, she approached a blacksmith to help her forge her larger pieces into garden art. Demetra comes from a family of artists and her work is inspired by the art of Miro and Kandinsky. She enjoys doing art fairs and feels fortunate she has made her living as an artist.

Purpose:To publicly display my artists statement and artwork that I have been working on as part of my degree pro-gram at the University of Minnesota - give the viewers a chance to participate in a conversation by creating artwork. They will comment on my artists statement and artwork by drawing on a transparent page which is placed on top of my prints.

Desired Outcome: Be able to gauge a response to my artists statement (is it easy for them to understand it and interact with my display like I intend), and receive feedback about the prints that I have made. Obtain at least 50 participant responses that I can use as documentation and be able to display at a later time.

PLEASE RECYCLE! Glass, plastic bottles, cans go in the BLUE BINS.

Grandmas Garden is a story of taking responsibil-ity for the future. A grandma, remembering what she learned about the environment as a child, teaches neighborhood chil-dren lessons in stewardship of the land and its inhabitants. The play, written and directed by Kayte Norini, was first pro-duced at Powderhorn in 1996, and was performed by partici-pants of the Summer Theatre Arts program.

This year, Kayte and Theatre Arts students brought Grandma and her friends back for four performances at the Powder-horn Park Community Center in July. At this years art fair, they will be performing Litterbug Rap four times on Sunday, and the troupe will lead a parade around the lake. All cos-tumes and props are made from recycled materials.

Please join us on Sunday, as the beneficial insects join forces with Grandma and the community to teach the Litterbug and his destructive companions better habits. These performanc-es are possible through a grant awarded from Minneapolis Mobilizing Citizens for Grassroots Climate Change.

The Powderhorn Park Theater performances and the Minnesota Energy Challenge tote bags are made possible through a micro grant from the 2008 Minneapolis Mobilizing Citizens for Grassroots Climate Change. The Theater Program (also lovingly referred to as

Kaytes Kids) operates all year long and is funded, in part, by the Powderhorn Art Fair.
